Eagle Bulk CEO Gary Vogel Named CMA Commodore

Gary Vogel, chief executive officer of Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc., has been named as the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) Commodore for the year 2022.The 2022 Commodore Award, given each year to a person in the international maritime industry who has contributed to the growth and development of the industry, will be presented on March 31, at the Gala Dinner marking the conclusion of the annual Connecticut Maritime Association conference and expo, in Stamford, Conn..Vogel has served as CEO and director of Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. (NASDAQ: EGLE) since September, 2015.

United Overseas Group to Acquire United Arab Chemical Carriers

Investment company United Overseas Group (UOG) is to acquire Dubai-based shipping company United Arab Chemical Carriers (UACC), the two companies said on Thursday.The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the first quarter, they said in a statement, without disclosing the value.UOG is controlled by shipping industry veterans Peter Georgiopoulos and Leonidas Vrondissi.The sale of UACC, whose shareholders include the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, was held up in 2017 after a bitter diplomatic rift broke between the Gulf Arab states, sources familiar with matter had told Reuters.The countries agreed this week to end the dispute that had seen Saudi Arabia and some allies cut ties with Qatar over accusations it supports terrorism.

Euronav to buy Gener8 Maritime

Tanker operator Euronav is to buy U.S. rival Gener8 Maritime to create one of the world's top oil shipping fleets, the companies said on Thursday, in an all-stock deal worth an estimated $490 million. Tanker companies have faced tough conditions in recent months, partly due to a glut of ships available for hire, and as a result have been looking for ways to build scale and cut costs. The Euronav deal is the first major M&A transaction since Oslo-listed tanker player Frontline said in June it had abandoned its pursuit of New York-listed rival DHT Holdings . Euronav, headquartered in Belgium, said the deal would create a tanker group with "tangible economies of scale" and an estimated market capitalisation of about $1.8 billion.

Gener8 Maritime Net Income Up 91%

Announcing its financial results today for the three and six months ended June 30, 2016 Gener8 Maritime, Inc. reported net income of $38.0 million, or $0.46 basic and diluted earnings per share, for the three months ended June 30, 2016, a 91% increase compared to $19.9 million for the same period in the prior year. Genco Shipping among Top 10 Bankruptcies of 2014

Peter Georgiopoulos’s Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd., an operator of dry-bulk cargo ships, steamed into the No. 3 berth on the Top 10 List for 2014 when it filed for chapter 11 protection on April 21, 2014, in the Southern District of New York with nearly $3 billion in assets and $1.5 billion in debt. According to Jones Day composition of the Top 10 List of public bankruptcy filings for 2014 weakness in charter rates made it difficult for the company to pay its creditors. The shipping industry has suffered from a glut of vessels after buying too many before the 2008 global recession, driving down rates and saddling companies like Genco with too much debt.

Genco Reaches Bankruptcy Restructuring Deal

Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd. will cut its debt by more than $1 billion by giving control of the company to its lenders in a deal that requires the dry bulk shipping company to file for bankruptcy. Lenders backing a $1.06 billion credit facility would convert their debt into about 81.1 percent of company's stock, according to a regulatory filing from Thursday. Investors who hold $125 million of Genco convertible debt would receive 8.4 percent of the company. The remaining equity would be allocated to those investors funding a $100 million rights offering…

Trial of Atlantis Artificial Seabed System

General Maritime, Arlington Tankers Merge

General Maritime Corporation and Arlington Tankers Ltd. jointly entered into a definitive agreement whereby the two companies will combine in a stock- for-stock combination. Georgiopoulos Launches Green Maritime Partners

Peter C. Georgiopoulos launched Green Maritime Partners, LLC (GMP), a private equity fund targeting environmentally sustainable investments within the maritime and clean energy sectors. “Environmental reform in the maritime industry is becoming a critical issue. GMP also intends to fund promising projects in the clean energy area outside of the maritime industry.
