Crowley Fuels took delivery Tuesday of its new Alaska Class 100,000-barrel, articulated tug-barge (ATB), which will be used to transport petroleum products for the Alaska market, from Bollinger Shipyards.Crowley will operate the 483-foot ATB for Alaska-based Petro Star Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC) under a long-term charter. Crowley Shipping’s petroleum services group will operate the ATB on behalf of Crowley Fuels.The ATB is the first in Crowley’s fleet to be dedicated to the Alaska market.

Crowley Maritime Corp. has taken delivery of Louisiana, the third of four new, Jones Act product tankers being built for the company by Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI), the sole operating subsidiary of Philly Shipyard ASA. The delivery marks another highpoint for Crowley’s petroleum services group as its tankers are at the forefront of the industry for their potential future conversion to LNG propulsion. Louisiana, which is 50,000 dead-weight-tons (dwt) and capable of carrying 330,000-barrels of product, is scheduled to be christened in New Orleans on May 5.

The North Sea needs continued investment from businesses and government through its current period of transition, according to a new report from Deloitte, the business advisory firm. Deloitte’s Petroleum Services Group’s latest North West Europe Review, which details drilling, licensing, and deal activity across the region for the whole of 2014, follows a year of change on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS), along with volatility in commodity prices over the last five months. The report found that 40 wells were drilled offshore UK throughout the year. This is down on the 50 wells reported in 2013 but largely consistent with expectations given recent trends and market conditions.

Oil and gas operators may be sitting on new investment decisions until the future of the North Sea becomes clearer, according to the latest report from business advisory firm Deloitte. The report, which details drilling, licensing and deal activity across North West Europe over the third quarter of 2014 and was ompiled by Deloitte’s Petroleum Services Group (PSG), found that four deals were announced offshore UK. This is slightly down in the five transactions reported in Q2 2014 and substantially lower than the 14 registered during Q3 2013. Derek Henderson, senior partner in Deloitte’s Aberdeen office, said the drop in deals may be down to North Sea operators continuing to wait for further clarity about the future of the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS).

Drilling and deal activity on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) will remain at ‘a steady low’ for at least the next year, suggests a new report from business advisory firm Deloitte. Poor weather and high costs have already had an impact on the amount of exploration and appraisal (E&A) work conducted by operators in the region during the first quarter. The report, which details activity across North West Europe over the first three months of 2014 and was compiled by Deloitte’s Petroleum Services Group (PSG), found a total of 12 E&A wells were drilled on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). Although that represents an increase of five wells compared with Q4 2013, it is a decrease of one well on the same period last year.

North Sea drilling activity eased during the third quarter of 2013 following an encouraging second quarter, according to the latest report into offshore activity from Deloitte, the business advisory firm.The report, compiled by Deloitte’s petroleum services group (PSG), found that although the number of new wells drilled on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) fell by around one third in comparison to Q2, the outlook for the North Sea remained positive. A total of 11 exploration and appraisal wells were drilled in the UK during the third quarter of 2013 – five fewer than during Q2 and six fewer than the same period last year. Despite the fall in figures for the UKCS, the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) has produced eight more wells during Q3 2013 than the same period last year.

Increased UK drilling and deal activity leads the way back to health in North West Europe says new report. A broader range of tax allowances and a sustained high oil price boosted drilling activity on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) by one third in 2012, according to a new report by Deloitte, the business advisory firm. The report, compiled by Deloitte’s petroleum services group (PSG), which documents drilling and licensing activity across North West Europe for the whole of last year, shows 65 exploration and appraisal wells were drilled on the UKCS in 2012, marking a 33% increase on last year’s total of 49. This compares to lower drilling activity levels reported in Norway in 2012, down by 19% when compared to the previous year.

Crowley Maritime Corporation recently welcomed a new addition to its American-made and operated  fleet of petroleum tank vessels, the 750-class articulated tug-barge (ATB) Legend/750-2. The milestone came exactly five years after Crowley first announced plans to build the 750-class, which is considered one of largest, fastest and safest in the industry. The latest vessel is the second of three in the class, and will transport petroleum products – including gasoline – along the U.S. West, Gulf and East Coasts.

Crowley Maritime Corporation christen the 16,000-horsepower tugboat 'Legend' and 330,000-barrel tank barge 750-2 in Tampa, Florida. Offshore drilling activity on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) rose 64% during the second quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year, according to the latest industry figures released by Deloitte. The report, which documents drilling and licensing across North West Europe between April 1 and June 30, shows 18 exploration and appraisal wells were drilled on the UKCS during the period. This also represents a 64% increase on the first quarter of 2012. With deal activity – where oil and gas fields are bought and/or sold - in the UK also rising 47% this quarter, compared to Q2 last year, and an increase in field development approvals and start-ups, the outlook for the UK oil and gas industry is positive.

Crowley's petroleum services group has taken delivery of its newest tug, Avik, to serve in the company's oil transportation and distribution fleet. The 76-ft. tug was designed by Crowley's Vessel Management Services team and built by Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, Wash. It was delivered on June 3 and has been put into service in Alaska. The purpose-built tug was designed for both shallow water and ocean towing operations. It features a raised bridge for improved visibility, an electric tow winch for coastal towing and fendered push knees for river or beaching operations. The Avik is powered by three Caterpillar 3406E diesel engines generating 1,350 hp.

Crowley Maritime Corporation announces the appointment of Bruce Barto to vice president and general manager of its newly formed Petroleum Services group based in Seattle. Barto has profit and loss responsibility for Petroleum Services and reports directly to Tom Crowley Jr., chairman, president and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation. Reporting to Barto are Bruce Harland who has been promoted to director, operations and will be relocating from Houston to Seattle; Jim Dwight, sales manager, Alaska; Royal Harris, manager, pricing; Chris Dugan, sales manager, oil transportation; and Hugh Stepaniuk who has been promoted to director, finance.

The vessels christened were the 9,280 HP-tug Resolve and barge 650-3. During ceremonies held at the Mobile Convention Center on South Water Street, Nancy Schlueter, wife of Ed Schlueter, vice president of Crowley's Vessel Management Services (VMS) christened the Resolve, while Alison Haber-Djuve, wife of Karsten Djuve, regional chartering manager, BP Shipping USA, christened barge 650-3. Crowley's Petroleum Services group will charter the VT Halter Marine-built ATB from VMS, and operate it for BP under a seven-year agreement.

M-I SWACO acquired Specialised Petroleum Services Group Limited (SPS) of Aberdeen, Scotland in exchange for cash consideration of approximately $165m. The acquired operations had revenues of $38m for the six months ended June 30, with 75 percent of the business focused in the Eastern Hemisphere markets and 85 percent of their revenues generated from offshore drilling operations. The operations will be joined under the newly-formed wellbore assurance and productivity business unit which had combined revenues of approximately $400m at June 30 on a trailing 12-month basis. Crowley Maritime Corporation announced that Bruce Harland has been promoted to vice president of the company's West Coast, Alaska and international contract services. He will remain in Seattle and continue to report to John Douglass, senior vice president and general manager of Crowley's marine services group. Harland, who most recently served as general manager of West Coast, Alaska and international contract services, will now have profit and loss responsibilities for the business as part of the upgrade in the position. His group provides a myriad of services to customers, including energy logistics, remote offshore drilling support, ocean towing and transportation, and energy support services, including all-terrain transportation of cargo and personnel on the North Slope of Alaska.
