MSC Isabella, Largest Boxship to Call in Singapore Port

The 23,656 teu MSC Isabella became the largest containership to call the Port of Singapore when it berthed on 10 November 2019.The MSCā€™s Gülsün-Class of container vessels is currently the worldā€™s largest series of container ships.To date, MSC Isabella is the biggest container ship to call at Singapore, the worldā€™s top transshipment hub. Measuring around 400 meters long and 61 meters wide, the ship can carry up to 24 rows of containers, with a height of 13 tiers on deck. Its total capacity is 23,656 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). Its length exceeds that of the Eiffel Tower and it can transport the equivalent of about 384 million pairs of shoes.Singapore is the shipā€™s first port-of-call in Asia after sailing back from Europe. The ship was delivered to MSC in August 2019.

Hamburg Süd Ugrades for Pharmaceutical Reefer Market

The transportation of pharmaceutical products in reefer equipment is subject to the particularly strict guidelines of the Good Distribution Practice (GDP) scheme. Hamburg Süd will be meeting the requirements with regard to calibration processes as of July and therefore be able to respond flexibly to corresponding customer wishes. The guidelines for GDP are specified by the World Health Organization as well as the European Commission. They stipulate that the temperature-regulating sensors of the reefer machinery not only monitor each other automatically, but also that calibration has to take place, and be documented, at regular intervals.

Hapag-Lloyd's Newest Ship Named Guayaquil Express

Hapag-Lloyd held a naming ceremony in Hamburg for the Guayaquil Express, the fourth of five newbuildings in its 10,500 TEU class. The patron is Christine Kühne, wife of Klaus-Michael Kühne, majority shareholder and Honorary Chairman of Kühne + Nagel International AG. Among those attending the christening at the Container Terminal Altenwerder in the Port of Hamburg were Olaf Scholz, the Mayor of Hamburg, and Angela Titzrath, the CEO of Hamburg Hafen und Logistik AG. ā€œThis naming ceremony is a symbol of the close connection to our home port, which is simultaneously the home port of the Guayaquil Express,ā€ said Michael Behrendt, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG. ā€œFor us, the Guayaquil Express is a ā€˜smart shipā€™,ā€ said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.

North P&I Warns of Risks of Reduced Generator Capacity

North P&I Club is advising its members to be aware of the potentially severe consequences of poorly maintained or overloaded on-board generators being unable to meet the electrical demands of ships at sea. The warning comes in the latest issue of the clubā€™s loss prevention newsletter Signals. According to deputy loss prevention director Colin Gillespie, ā€˜Generators have a critical function to play on all ships. They provide electrical power for ever-more complex navigation, communication and safety systems as well as essential on-board services and vital equipment such as cranes, winches and bow thrusters. North says insufficient generator maintenance is a common industry failing.

4 Chaplains Foundation Recognizes Helix CEO

On Thursday, March 19, 2015, Arthur H. Thomas, Sr., president and CEO of Helix Alliance, Inc., received the Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award. The award was presented by retired Capt. Louis Cavaliere, U.S. Navy, chairman of the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation, and George DuBois, chapel trustee, and mentor to the shipping community. The presentation was made at a joint meeting of the Propeller Club of Jacksonville and the Navy League. Cavaliere cited Thomasā€™ participation in numerous charitable organizations, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and American Diabetes Foundation, through his position as chief operating officer at Solutions Through Advanced Research, Inc. (STAR), a Jacksonville company active in pharmaceutical research and clinical trials.

CMA CGM Acquires 7,000 Reefer Containers

The CMA CGM Group announced it has acquired more than 7,000 of last generation 40ā€™ High Cube Reefer containers including 6,000 low consumption engines. The CMA CGM Group said regularly invests Reefer containers that reduce carbon print by 60% compare to the first generationā€™s Reefers, allow a precise controlling of the cold chain and optimize the atmosphere control, operate a phytosanitary cold treatment needed for perishable goods and lengthen significantly their shelf life.

In cooperation with the Propeller Club Basel, Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) hosted a port soiree for representatives of the transport and logistics sector in northern Switzerland on 12 April 2011. A total of 160 guests, including 20 from Hamburg and its metropolitan region, accepted the invitation to attend this event at the Hotel Mercure Europe Basel, where they were welcomed by Mr Thomas W.Rickli, President of the Propeller Club Basel, and Jürgen Behrens, Manager of the HHM representative office for Munich and Switzerland.

Hamburg Leads Foreign Trade with India

A joint delegation consisting of representatives of Hamburgā€™s port-related industries and the marketing organization for Finlandā€™s transport and logistics sector, Straight-way Finland, visited the Indian port city of Mumbai this week. At a workshop organized by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) and the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK), Axel Mattern from HHM, Thomas Lütje and Bernt Wegener from HHLA Container Terminals GmbH, and Werner Schulze-Freyberg from Polzug Intermodal GmbH highlighted the strong trade relations between Hamburg and the Indian sub-continent in their presentations and then detailed the range of services available for the container-handling and intermodal transport segments.
