US Government Boosts Oil Tanker Fleet in National Shipping Overhaul

The United States is boosting access to commercial products tankers as part of a security drive to safeguard oil shipping for its armed forces in times of crisis, a top Department of Transportation (DOT) official said.The U.S. flagged commercial fleet comprises a few dozen tankers with the majority involved in domestic trade and there has been concern over possible disruptions to the U.S. economy if those vessels were sought for use by the military, according to a Department of Defense study.The Tanker Security Program has aimed to charter 10 internationally trading vessels for 2023 that can move oil products. Shippers Launch Tender to Accelerate Zero-Emission Shipping

The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) has launched a Request for Proposals (RfP) for 600,000 TEUs over a three-year period on ocean vessels powered by zero-emission fuels.This will help its member companies reduce nearly one million metric tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 215,000 cars off the road. The RfP is the first major buyer-led initiative to accelerate the transition to zero-emission maritime fuels. The U.S. Navy has long valued the potential of additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D Printing.AM refers to the depositing of material layer by layer to create an object. For the Navy, it’s not practical to carry every replacement part for every system on a ship, and it can be difficult to forecast if or when parts will fail. AM provides a flexible source of supply in being able to make parts instead of ordering them and waiting for them to arrive, especially for warships at the far end of the supply chain.

Maersk's Svitzer, APM Terminals Hire 'Transformation' Executives

Danish shipping and logistics giant A.P. Moller-Maersk has appointed a pair of executives to lead transformation at its towage and terminals subsidiaries.Sabrina Weymiens has been named Head of Transformation at towage provider Svitzer, and Charlotte Guillaumie has been named Head of Strategy and Transformation at port operating company APM Terminals.Kasper Nilaus, CEO at Svitzer said, “We are delighted that Sabrina has accepted this new role and will help secure steady progress on our transformation roadmap.

Glamox CEO Transition Set for 2022

Glamox said that Rune Marthinussen,CEO & President, plans to retire from the company next year, and that the Board of Directors has appointed Astrid Simonsen Joos to succeed him as CEO. The change takes effect August 1, 2022, and Marthinussen has agreed to support Astrid full time until December 31, 2022. Astrid Simonsen Joos most recently served as Global Chief Digital Officer and Head of Transformation of Signify (previously Philips Lighting). She has throughout her career had roles in the software industry and within digital business developments through numerous management positions at Microsoft and the position as CEO of a digital agency (Creuna). Astrid Simonsen Joos also currently serves on the boards of Telenor and Nordea Invest.

First Tanker Moves to Cameron LNG Plant since Hurricane Delta

The first liquefied natural gas tanker to go to Cameron LNG's export plant in Louisiana since Hurricane Delta was set to arrive on Tuesday.Golar Seal was [on Tuesday] sailing up the Calcasieu Ship Channel on its way to Cameron, according to Refinitiv ship tracking data.The last vessel to go to Cameron was SK Audace on Oct. 4-5, according to the Refinitiv data. US Army Corps Clearing Debris from Louisiana Calcasieu Ship Channel After Delta

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said on Wednesday that it may be able to clear enough debris from Hurricane Delta to open the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Louisiana to vessels drafting up to 30 feet (9.14 m) with restrictions by the end of the week.The Army Corps, however, said it does not have a timeline for restoration to full deep draft (40 feet) traffic.Analysts said a fully laden liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker has a draft of around 40 feet.

Army Corps Assessing Louisiana Calcasieu Ship Channel After Delta

UV-C Keeping Ship Hulls Free from Biofouling

The presence of biofouling on the hull of a ship increases the drag from the water during sailing and thereby the fuel consumption, which results in increased CO2 emissions as well as increased costs for the ship owner. Maritime Pilots Recognized with IMO Bravery Accolade

Two maritime pilots who defied fire to bring a burning ship to safety, averting a major maritime catastrophe, received the 2017 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea during the 2017 IMO awards ceremony, held on Monday (27 November). Pilots Captain Michael G. McGee and Captain Michael C. Phillips, from Houston, United States, were recognized for their role in averting a major tragedy in September 2016. The ship they were piloting, the 247 meters-long tanker Aframax River, broke down in the Houston Ship Channel in the middle of the night and burst into flames after colliding with mooring dolphins. Oil Prices Soar 4%

Oil prices jumped 4 percent on Tuesday, bouncing back from multi-month lows on expectations that OPEC will agree later this month to cut production to reduce a supply glut. Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih is expected to travel to the Qatari capital, Doha, this week for meetings with oil-producing countries on the sidelines of an energy forum, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is due to meet on Nov. 30 to agree to limit output. NAVTOR will spend the next three years helping the EU chart a route towards autonomous vessels, as it was selected to represent the maritime industry in the ENABLE project - conceived to prove, verify and validate the safety of autonomous vehicles in Europe. NAVTOR has now received funding to investigate the concept of ‘shore-based bridges’, a crucial steppingstone on the path to autonomy. Konecranes-Terex Deal to Proceed as Zoomlion Drops Rival Bid

China's Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Co Ltd has abandoned its $3.4 billion bid for U.S. crane maker Terex Corp , clearing the way for a smaller deal between Terex and Finland's Konecranes. The decision comes after six months of merger talks between Terex and Zoomlion, and marks the latest setback to corporate China's ambitions to acquire U.S. assets. In March, Anbang Insurance Group Co unexpectedly withdrew its $14 billion offer to buy Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.

Meijer Appointed CEO of Huisman

Huisman announced that André Meijer is appointed as CEO, effective August 1, 2015. This appointment follows the decision of Joop Roodenburg to step down as the company’s CEO this year to the CTO position. From his new position as CTO, Roodenburg will remain a member of the board and will now be able to fully focus on technical innovation for the company’s various product groups, Huisman said. A senior chief petty officer assigned to Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) received the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award in a ceremony at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., Nov. Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Carl M. Thompson was presented the award by Peter F. Fertig, President of The Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation. The annual award was established by the Bob Feller Act of Valor Foundation in 2013 and is presented to three people who represent the important areas of Feller's life: his major league baseball career, his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame (NBHOF) and his service as a Navy chief petty officer.

Strum Named Samson President & CEO

Samson, the worldwide leader in performance cordage, announces that after 41 years with the company, Tony Bon will step down as CEO on January 1, 2016. Andrea Sturm has been appointed as Bon’s successor and will be joining the Samson team in November 2015. Bon will remain on staff through the end of 2016 to support Sturm during the transition. Bon has been a valued member of the Samson team since 1974 when he began on the manufacturing floor in Samson’s Massachusetts facility.
