Lemanowicz Joins Poseidon Barge, Piedmont Relocates

APM Terminals Opens Vado Gateway

APM Terminals has confirmed that its new Vado Gateway terminal, located in the Vado Ligure Port Complex, North Western Italy, will be inaugurated on 12 December this year.With the placement of the terminal’s last caisson this week - an important milestone in the build - the commercial team have been actively engaging with the market. The launch commenced with an event at the Genoa Aquarium last month.Future services offered by the terminal were presented to key managers from the main Maritime Companies and Shipping Houses operating in the Italian market.Once operational, the Vado Gateway Terminal will be fully integrated with the existing Vado Ligure Reefer Terminal.Vado Ligure will become the first semi-automated port in Italy with a fully-automated gate and stacking yard.

Piedmont Awards EPC Gig to Matrix

Oklahoma-based Matrix Service Company has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Piedmont Natural Gas LNG  facility in North Carolina.The contract was awarded to Matrix’s subsidiary, Matrix Service Inc, to build its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Robeson County, North Carolina.The facility will help Piedmont Natural Gas continue providing customers with a reliable supply of natural gas during peak usage days, when extremely low temperatures create a higher-than-normal demand for natural gas.The 1 billion-cubic-foot (Bcf) storage facility will cover approximately 60 acres of a 685- acre piece of Piedmont-owned property.

CSX Plans $272 Million Intermodal Rail Terminal in NC

Florida-based transportation giant CSX Corp. is planning a $272 million intermodal rail terminal in North Carolina serving the Raleigh region that it envisions as a major transportation hub to make the state’s ports more competitive. The major freight rail infrastructure project in the Triangle project will spur economic development and help position the region as a major transportation logistics hub, says the company. Wilmington could reap significant benefits if the intermodal freight rail hub is built in Johnston County, state transportation officials said Thursday. The railroad operator is committed to spending $150 million for the project, which will be located in Johnston County and depends on receiving $100 million state transportation funds.

Passing of Molly Murphy Crowley

Molly Murphy Crowley, 71, of Piedmont, Calif., Crowley Maritime Corporation board member, past Portland, Ore. real estate mogul, philanthropist and competitive amateur golfer died March 21 following an illness surrounded by her family at her Indian Wells, Calif. vacation home. Mrs. Crowley was born Nov. 27, 1938 in Portland to Dorothy and Peter Murphy. She was the third of eight children, and attended grade school at St. Thomas More Catholic School and high school at Holy Child Academy in Portland, and college at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y.

Nichols Brothers Catamaran Delivered

Another Nichols Brothers catamaran joined the commuter fleet on San Francisco Bay in November. Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, Inc., of Whidbey Island, Wash., delivered a Cummins-powered, 112-ft. vessel for service between Alameda, Oakland, and San Francisco. The 315-passenger catamaran, M/V Peralta, will be operated by the Alameda/Oakland Ferry Service, with the Blue and Gold Fleet providing maintenance and engineering services. As with the 27 other catamarans built by Nichols Brothers, the vessel was designed by International Catamaran Designs of Sydney, Australia. Commuter route for the Peralta includes the ports of Alameda and Oakland and the ferry landing on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

Port of Wilmington, N.C. Handles Record Volume of Breakbulk Cargo

For the first time ever, the Port of Wilmington, NC handled over one million tons of breakbulk cargo in one year for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2002. "Breakbulk cargo" is classified as any commodity that is shipped in units other than maritime containers or in free flowing "bulk" form. Cargoes contributing to the record-breaking volume of 1,001,728 tons were export woodpulp and import lumber. Woodpulp, which is exported worldwide from Wilmington for the manufacture of higher grades of paper, exceeded last year's volume by 11%. Lumber, imported from northern Europe and Scandinavia for the home improvement and construction industry, increased tonnage by 77% over last year.
