At the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) yard in Okpo, Korea, Hamburg Süd christened the largest-ever container ship in the company's history. The "Rio de la Plata" is the first newbuilding in a series of six identical vessels each possessing a slot capacity of 5,900 TEU. New Trawler for Argentine Owner
The port of Mar del Plata, located about 400 km south of Buenos Aires, has a long history as a center for commercial fishing. (www.mardelplata.com/puerto/banquina_eng.asp ) The shipyard Astillero Mar del Plata has recently added another fishing vessel to the extensive fleet operating from the port. Built to a local design, ATMAR FB-20, the new trawler is 20.82 by 6.4-meters with a molded depth of 3.15 meters. The vessel has accommodation for up to 12 crew members and a hold capacity for 80 tons of fish.

Containers Overboard in Oakland Estuary
Containers fell into the water from motor vessel NYK Aquarius while offloading cargo at SSA Facility Berth 57 in the Oakland estuary, causing the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and local fire department personnel to enforce a safety zone in the area. At approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report of three drifting containers in the Oakland estuary. Coast Guard Station San Francisco launched two response boatcrews to maintain a 500-yard safety zone with Alameda County Fire Department and Oakland Fire Department crews. Coast Guard crews safely escorted dinner cruise vessels to their berths in Oakland until the containers could be safely removed.

Students Protect Inlets from Oil Contamination
A new Texas Tidal Inlet Protection Strategies (TIPS) program, being developed by researchers at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, will soon be in place to protect our state’s sensitive bays and estuaries from the potential harm of offshore oil spills. The bays and estuaries of the Texas coast serve as nurseries for several species of marine organisms including sport fish. These estuaries are connected to the Gulf of Mexico through various inlets. An oil spill in any of these sensitive habitats has the potential to kill fish and even shut down popular tourist areas.
Refitted Boat Returns to Estuary Services
Estuary Warden a VT Halmatic Nelson 48/50 pilot boat has recently been delivered back to Estuary Services Ltd following a thorough mid-life refit at VT Halmatic’s Portchester Shipyard. The Pilot Cutter first entered service in 1992 and has been in continuous service ever since in the busy approaches to the Thames Estuary and Medway Ports. The craft was weighed and inclined pre-contract to ensure that design changes would not increase the VCG or change the LCG as Estuary Services Ltd were pleased with the sea keeping and handling of the craft. Weighing and inclining post re-fit confirmed that both all up weight and VCG had been reduced and sea trials confirmed the craft had retained its good sea keeping and handling characteristics.

Biggest Irish Port Project Gets Underway
Ireland’s largest bulk port company, Shannon Foynes Port Company (SFPC), announced yesterday the commissioning of the first ports infrastructure project since the turn of the millennium, with a €50million capital investment programme at Foynes. Kvichak to Build Catamaran Research Vessel
Kvichak Marine Industries, Inc. was recently awarded a contract for construction of a 60’ aluminum catamaran research vessel for the California Department of Water Resources designed by Incat Crowther, Australia with design guidance and customer representation by Jensen Maritime Consultants. The vessel’s primary application will be monitoring water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthic macro-invertebrates. The vessel will be operating in the San Francisco Bay Estuary, San Pablo Bay Estuary and the Pacific Ocean within five miles of shore and the adjoining inland waterways.
Chemical Tanker Adrift Off Irish Coast: Tugboat Despatched
The tanker, carrying a 15,000-tonne cargo of caustic soda with 22 crew on board, lost power to its main engines 100 nautical miles off Loop Head while bound for Aughinish in the Shannon Estuary, reports 'The Irish Times'. The tanker, Hellesport Charger, registered in the Marshall Islands, was on a voyage from Corpus Christi in Texas in the western Gulf of Mexico to Aughinish in the Shannon Estuary when it lost power. Sea conditions are said to be rough with a six-metre swell and winds of up to force eight. The ship is not, however, believed to be in danger.
Historic Tug Raised by Global Diving & Salvage
Built in 1945, the 141-foot steam powered tugboat was utilized by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroads. Originally named the Edward J Engel, it moved railroad car barges from Oakland to San Francisco until 1969. After which she passed through several hands and eventually her name was changed to TV ‘Respect’. She remained a steam powered vessel till 2007, when she sank at her moorings in the Oakland Estuary. Oregonian Raises New Questions
An independent review conducted and reported today by the Oregonian concludes that the government’s economic justifications for a controversial proposal to dredge the Columbia River are deeply flawed. The Corps of Engineers wants to spend $196 million to dredge more than 100 miles of the Columbia River. In a three-part series beginning today, the Oregonian will report that deficiencies in the analysis have significantly inflated the benefits to the region and an underestimated the costs to taxpayers. “The Corps of Engineers’ math does not add up,” said David Moryc, Lower Columbia River Coordinator for American Rivers. China Crude Cargoes Stranded on VLCCs
About 4 million barrels of crude oil bought by a Chinese state trader for the country's strategic reserves have been stranded in two tankers off an eastern port for nearly two months due to a lack of storage. The delays will cost millions of dollars and indicate how China is struggling to import record amounts of crude if storage and port capacity at Qingdao, its largest oil import terminal, are unable to keep pace. Ocean Lily and Plata Glory, two very large crude carriers (VLCCs) carrying oil for Sinochem Corp, arrived at Huangdao, Qingdao's main oil terminal, in early September, and both were still at anchor this week, waiting to unload, according to Reuters' shipping data, and trade and port sources.

Trailer Bridge Participates in Haiti Relief Effort
Trailer Bridge, Inc. (NASDAQ Global Market: TRBR), as part of the global relief effort for Haiti, contracted with the Military Sealift Command (MSC), the transportation provider for the United States Department of Defense, to provide one of its vessels in support of the U.S. government’s relief efforts in Haiti. The contract term is a minimum of 90 days and may be extended by MSC. Trailer Bridge has also partnered with one of its current shipping customers to provide free transportation and trailers for donated medical supplies to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, through the company’s operation in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. It is expected that the company’s donated trailers will remain in Haiti for local use or storage.

Argentine naval training ship, 'ARA Libertad' which was detained in Ghana for more than two months has arrived back home. The Libertad had been seized following legal action by an investment company trying to recover money still owed after Argentina's 2002 debt default.
