USCG Respond to Grounded Vessel near Pleasant Harbor, Washington

The Coast Guard and Washington State Department of Ecology responded to a report of a 65-foot pleasure craft that ran aground near Pleasant Harbor in Brinnon, Wash., Sept. 14, 2014.  It was reported that there is the potential for up to 500 gallons of diesel fuel to be aboard the vessel and an unrecoverable sheen was reported on the water. UPI Wins Engineering Contract from Dominion Resources

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) subsidiary UniversalPegasus International (UPI) was awarded the engineering services contract for the Pleasant Valley Compressor Station Project in Virginia by Dominion Resources. The value of the transaction was not disclosed.   The Pleasant Valley Compressor Station Project is a modification of the existing compressor station to accommodate increasing customer demand. UPI will provide detailed engineering and construction support services for the project.

USCG to Evaluate Passamaquoddy Bay for LNG Shipments

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a Press Release stating that it will assess safety and security issues associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers transiting Passamaquoddy Bay to deliver cargoes to a proposed LNG terminal to be built at Point Pleasant, Maine. Source: HK Law

British Forces Assist Stricken Cruise Liner

Military assets deployed in support of Falkland Island government in cruise ship rescue. In support of the Falkland Island Government, British forces based in the Falkland Islands yesterday responded to a distress call by the 10,000 tonne cruise ship ‘Le Boreal’. The ship reported suffering a major engine room fire, which caused the loss of all power and left the ship drifting. A north-westerly gale placed the ship in real danger of grounding on Cape Dolphin, East Falkland. The master ordered the ship, with 347 passengers and crew, to be abandoned early yesterday morning. Working closely with the Falkland Islands Government, British Forces enacted a major search and rescue plan.

Grounding Kills 1, Injures 2 in Charleston Harbor

One person was killed and two people were injured when a boat ran aground on Shutes Folly off Charleston, South Carolina, late Thursday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. One man was killed after being ejected from the vessel. Two female passengers were treated for injuries and were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston received the initial report of the incident from one of the injured passengers, stating their recreational boat had run aground with enough force to eject one person from the boat. A boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Charleston was launched aboard a 29-foot Response Boat — Small II to assist. The deceased was transported by a Mt. Pleasant Fire Department response boat.

Four Rescued After Two Boats Crash on Manasquan Inlet Jetty

The Coast Guard and partner agencies monitor debris and pollution Monday after two boats grounded on the Manasquan Inlet jetty Sunday, stranding four people. The captain of the 32-foot boat, Slashbacks, contacted Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders at 11:30 p.m. Sunday via VHF-FM channel 16 radio reporting the Slashbacks lost power while towing a 31-foot boat, Lady Jane, through Manasquan Inlet. As a result of the power loss, the tow line parted and both boats grounded on Manasquan Inlet’s southern jetty, stranding three people on the jetty and one person aboard the Slashbacks.

Coast Guard Monitors Sunken Vessel for Pollution

Members assigned to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston are monitoring a sunken vessel Wednesday for potential pollution in Shem Creek, in Mount Pleasant, S.C. The Coast Guard was notified by the Charleston County 911 Consolidate Dispatch that the commercial fishing vessel Lady Eva was at the Wando Seafood Company dock and sinking in Shem Creek. Upon being notified of the incident, the Coast Guard dispatched pollution responders to determine if the vessel was discharging any hazardous material. The owner of the Lady Eva informed the Coast Guard the vessel had little to no fuel aboard due to operations over the last few days. Soft sorbent padding and sausage boom has been placed around the vessel in an effort to capture any residual pollution.

Viking Welding Delivers Fire/Rescue Boats

Fire Departments in South Carolina and Minnesota have recently accepted delivery of Response FR-28 and FR-31J boats built of welded aluminum by Viking Welding & Fabrication in Kensington, N.H. The boats were designed by Response Marine in Newburyport, Mass. The FR-28 specifications were developed by Mount Pleasant Fire Department in South Carolina to improve firefighting and rescue capability in the coastal areas surrounding Mount Pleasant, which include Charleston Harbor, Gray Bay and Hamlin Sound. Charleston Gets New Water Taxi

The Charleston Water Taxi is in business. The taxi started running earlier Monday, shuffling commuters between Mount Pleasant and Charleston. The trip costs $5 one way, $8 round trip or $12 for a day pass. Docking at the Charleston Harbor Marina and the Maritime Center, the water ride makes 12 stops a day. It's owners say their goal is to help commuters avoid traffic and parking problems downtown. The boat can hold 49 passengers and in the Springtime the taxi hopes to add more stops to it's commute. Dometic Marine Supplies Chilled Water Systems to Signet

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) specialist Dometic Marine has recently secured orders to supply its chilled water equipment to high performance tug builder Signet Maritime. As part of the new contract, Dometic Marine will supply its chillers on-board three  Signet 82 Metric Ton Bollard Pull Z-Drive tugs, to provide each vessel with 240,000 BTU (British Thermal Unit) or 20 tons of capacity. "We require the highest quality and proven-reliable air conditioning to provide a comfortable and pleasant working environment for our crew members, as well as cool sensitive electronic equipment on-board," said Joseph W. Dahl, General Manager of New Construction for Signet Maritime.

DonJon Marine Completes Atlantic Traveler Salvage

On May 11, the 70-ft fishing boat Atlantic Traveler sank after hitting the South Jetty of Manasquan Inlet off Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. Three crewmen onboard were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel sank outside the south Jetty in an Ocean Environment in an upside down position. After more than three weeks of inclement weather, Donjon  Marine was able to mobilize its 400-ton capacity Derrick barge Columbia, NY  from its home base in Port Newark, New Jersey to perform the wreck removal  of the vessel.

Coast Guard Responds to Vessel Aground

The Coast Guard is responding today to the scene of a fishing vessel that ran aground in Mantoloking, N.J. The Coast Guard was notified a that the Danielle, a 48-ft. wooden fishing vessel out of Cape May, N.J., was aground on the beaches of Mantoloking. Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., were dispatched to the scene to conduct an initial assessment and survey the scene. The Coast Guard dispatched marine inspectors to the scene from Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia to supervise the salvage of the vessel and coordinate the removal of fuel, oil and other potentially hazardous materials

Port of Rotterdam Reports Productive Year

According to the provisional figures the port of Rotterdam in 2002 handled 321,9 million tons of goods. This result nearly equals the record of 2000 (322,4 mln tons). CEO Willem Scholten called the result "a pleasant surprise". "In the present economic circumstances a stable level of throughput would have seemed more logical, but our second half year was extremely good. In containers and oil products even the best ever". Up were ores and scrap (+7%), oil products (+27%), roll on/roll off (+8%), containers (+7%, from 6,1 to 6,5 mln TEU). Down crude oil (-2%), other liquid bulk goods (-3%), coal (-3%), agricultural bulk goods (-19%), other dry bulk goods (-9%), other general cargo (-11%). The full press release in English will be issued coming Monday.

Nuclear-powered Savannah to get Makeover

Savannah, an old nuclear-powered ship that spent time in Charleston Harbor as a tourist attraction, is getting a face lift for a possible new tour of duty, according to a report on www.charleston.net. Savannah was the world's first nuclear-powered cargo and passenger vessel. It is set to be restored, possibly for its second stint as a floating museum, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration. Norfolk, Va.-based Colonna's Shipyard recently was awarded a $995,000 contract to renovate the 596-foot ship, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1991, when it was still part of the naval museum at state-owned Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.

Initial Cleanup Completed on NS Savannah

A historic nuclear-powered ship that probably attracted more barnacles than tourists while serving as a floating museum off Mount Pleasant has completed the first leg of its rehabilitation. But the next phase of work won't take place in the Lowcountry, as federal officials had once considered. The NS Savannah, the world's first nuclear-powered cargo and passenger vessel, is being restored, possibly for its second stint as a floating museum, according to its owner, MarAd. Colonna's Shipyard in Norfolk, Va., recently completed an initial $995,000 cleanup and renovation of the 596-foot ship, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1991, when it was still part of the naval museum at state-owned Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.

GA Contract for Launch & Recovery Systems

General Atomics signed a fixed-price contract modification for the production of the Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) and the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) for the U.S. Navy’s new CVN 78 aircraft carrier, to be named Gerald R. Ford. This action modifies the existing contract awarded in 2009 by the Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md. It includes a delivery incentive, based on the contract schedule of delivery of the EMALS equipment to the shipyard. “Our production efforts started last June for EMALS and in November for AAG. All long-lead materials are on order and component manufacturing is in process for a number of subsystems. We are on track for CVN 78,” said Electromagnetic Systems Division Vice President R. Scott Forney, III.

Bollinger Delivers Double Barge Hull

Bollinger Gretna L.L.C., Harvey, La., has delivered GCS 238, an Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA ’90) double hull, ocean service, oil tank barge to Gellatly & Criscione Services of Point Pleasant, NJ. Bollinger and Gellatly & Criscione Services signed the contract for the new building program in October 2004 and the vessel was delivered at Bollinger’s Gretna facility in July of 2005. Bollinger Marine Fabricators, Amelia, La., fabricated panels for the new 300-ft. by 64-ft. by 21-ft., 35,000 BBL barge and shipped them to Bollinger Gretna, Harvey, La. for installation of piping and other systems and final assembly. “The GCS 238 is the first OPA ’90 new-build in our planned fleet expansion.” said Alexander “Alex” Gellatly, president of Gellatly & Criscione Services.

NJ State Police Take Delivery of Moose Boat

Moose Boats delivers M1-44 Patrol Boat to NJ State Police. Moose Boats, an aluminum boat manufacturer, recently delivered a M1-44’ Catamaran to the New Jersey State Police in Point Pleasant, NJ. The M1-44’ is an all aluminum catamaran powered by twin 600hp Cummins diesel engines coupled to twin Hamilton 322 water-jets with Hamilton Blue Arrow Controls and a hydraulically driven fire fighting system with a remote control bow monitor rated for 750 GPM pumping. The M1-44 will serve as a regional marine fire-fighting asset throughout Southern NJ.

SeaArk Delivers Survey Boats to Corps of Engineers

SeaArk Marine, Inc. recently delivered two 2610 survey boats to the Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. The vessels are assigned to Pleasant Valley, Iowa and Lock and Dam 18 in Gladstone, Ill. The vessels are powered by twin Mercury Optimax, 225 hp outboard engines with side mounted dual controls and hydraulic trim tabs. These vessels can easily attain a top speed in excess of 34kts fully manned. All enclosed cabin spaces are fully insulated, air conditioned and heated.

3rd Annual Women on the Water Conference

The Maritime Administration and the Maine Maritime Academy will host the third annual “Women on the Water” conference on October 15-17, 2009 on the campus of the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. Each year, this event brings midshipmen and cadets attending America's maritime academies together with some of the most successful members of the maritime industry to discuss current issues. The conference, which welcomes all those with an interest in the maritime industry, will feature discussions on a variety of issues affecting the maritime trades and industry such as, human factors (e.g. fatigue, health, and criminalization), industry trends, emerging employment opportunities, regulatory changes, and piracy.

Aker Yards to Lengthen RCL’s Enchantment of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International Ltd. and Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc. have agreed on a revitalization project, including a midbody lengthening, for the luxury cruise ship M/S Enchantment of the Seas. The project has been developed by Kvaerner Masa-Yards Inc.'s Customer Service Division. The midbody will be built at Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Turku and the lengthening will take place between mid-May and early July 2005 while the cruise ship is being drydocked at the Keppel Verolme Shipyard in Rotterdam. The contract value for Kvaerner Masa-Yards is some €40-45 million.

News: PWF Welcomes Ocean Voyager

Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) of Wailuku, Hawaii recently welcomed the Ocean Voyager, to its fleet of excursion vessels. The all-aluminum catamaran, constructed by Kvichak Marine of Seattle, Washington, is the third catamaran constructed by Kvichak for PWF. Constructed to USCG regulations for 149 passengers, and based on Pacific Whale Foundation's 23 years of marine research and leading high quality marine ecotours, the Ocean Voyager is a Crowther Multihulls design. This hull design offers unsurpassed stability and an ultra-smooth ride for passengers. The 64 x 28-ft. vessel operates for PWF's Eco-Adventure cruises, which include snorkeling, wild dolphin watching, and whale watching tours out of Maui's Maalaea Harbor.
