The Polish government and the Polskie LNG company signed a grant agreement on 24 April for the extension of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Świnoujście, in north-western Poland on the Baltic Sea coast.Almost EUR 128 million from the European Regional Development Fund is invested in extending this terminal, which is the only facility of its size in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe.Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu said: "The extension of the Świnoujście terminal will help diversify natural gas supply sources and improve the country’s energy security. Poland’s LNG import terminal in Świnoujście will receive a EUR128mln grant from from the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund to expand its regasification capacity.The European Commission said in a notification that it has approved plans to support the increase of the regasification capacity, and the development of additional functionalities of the LNG terminal in Poland.The plans were approved under EU State aid rules and would see the terminal capacity increase from 5 to 7.5 billion cubic metres per year.The Commission approved the aid for the construction of this LNG terminal in 2011. Polish LNG terminal operator Polskie LNG has obtained a set of environmental and location decisions for all projects implemented under the LNG Terminal Expansion Program.The environmental permits are final, while the decisions issued by the Governor of West Pomerania are immediately enforceable (which stems directly from the provisions of the Special Act on the LNG Terminal).The Expansion Program of President Lech Kaczyński's LNG Terminal is implemented as scheduled."The environmental decision and location permit are of fundamental importance for subsequent phases of collating pivotal project documentation such as building permits required for the investment process," said Paweł Jakubowski, President of the Management Board of Polskie LNG.Meanwhile, two tender procedures are in progress.

Polskie LNG, the owner and operator of the Swinoujscie, Poland LNG terminal has published the contract notice that officially commences the tender procedure with the view to select the contractor for the terminal expansion.Polskie LNG officially informed about launching the tender procedure to select the contractor of the fourth project under the LNG Terminal Expansion Program, i.e. the construction of an additional jetty.The project is implemented in cooperation with the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority. The Świnoujscie LNG terminal in northern Poland is ready to receive its first shipment of gas, with a tanker leaving Qatar on its way to Poland. The tanker carrying LNG left Qatar-based Ras Laffan port on last Friday and is heading to the LNG terminal. The vessel is to reach the Polish port on December 11. Over 200,000 cubic meters of fuel will be transpoerted to Poland by Qatargas. Just a few days ago, PAP reported that following an audit of the terminal in Świnoujście, the Qatar-based company has confirmed that the facility is ready to receive the first batch of liquefied gas in mid-December. The terminal, one of the largest Polish energy investments in recent years, was officially opened in September by the then prime minister, Ewa Kopacz.

Poland expects to receive its first cargo of liquefied natural gas at its new LNG terminal at the end of November or early December, the treasury minister was quoted as saying on Sunday. Gaz-System’s unit Polskie LNG, which is building the import terminal, said it had reached an agreement with Italian company Saipem, the main contractor of the scheme, which was due to be carried out last year. The terminal's construction is to be officially completed on Monday. It  had originally been scheduled to open in 2014 but has been delayed several times.

Poland's liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at the Baltic port of Świnoujście will be completed only if Italian firm Saipem receives further payment, reports Reuters. The terminal, under construction by a consortium including Italy's Saipem, is a key element of Poland's strategy to diversify energy sources for the country that now heavily relies on Russian supplies of gas and oil. Saipem's spokeswoman Camilla Palladino said that the LNG terminal will be ready to take the first loads in the summer, assuming that the consortium receives appropriate support from Polskie LNG and that financing of the terminal's full operations in the following months will be provided. Polskie LNG, which is owned by Poland's gas grid Gaz-System and is responsible for the investment, declined to comment.
