DP World JV Wins French Port Gig

Generale de Manutention Portuaire (GMP), a joint venture between Dubai-based trade enabler DP World and French shipping line CMA CGM, has been awarded the service concession for the construction and operation of berths 11 and 12 at Port 2000 in Le Havre.According to a press release from the French port, the terminals of Port 2000 In Le Havre are trade-enabling gateways for cargo entering the French consumer markets. Recognizing the strategic importance of Port 2000, GMP has been an early supporter of port development and looks to grow its partnership with the Port of Le Havre by developing the terminal further."The addition of the two new berths will enable us to secure more volume and provide high-efficiency services," said Louis Jonquiere, managing director of GMP.

Shipping Giants Confirm Interest for Haropa

Haropa-Port of Le Havre is in the heart of the new "P3 Network" of shipping lines in Europe scheduled by the world’s three leading shipping lines: MAERSK Line, MSC and CMA-CGM. Haropa-Port of Le Havre gets ahead of its direct competitors for the number of services allocated by the "P3 Network."  Five Asia-Europe services out of the eight will actually be set up in 2014 between Asia and Northern Europe and three transatlantic services. The future services which will call in at Le Havre will offer direct calls to new ports, especially Japanese ports.

Largest French-flag Vessel Called in at Le Havre

The CMA CGM Jules Verne made her maiden call in Le Havre on June 20 at the Terminal de France in Port 2000. She is the world biggest French-flag containership. With a transport capacity of 16,020 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), she joins the other sister-ships ordered by CMA CGM shipping line and named after great sea explorers (real or virtual ones). Owing to its Port 2000 equipment, HAROPA-port of Le Havre is one of the very few ports in the north-European range to be able to receive this new giant of the seas, 396 meters long and 54 meters broad.

MSC Develops Business in French Port

MSC develops business with terminal operators Haropa, in the Port of Le Havre. with the launch of 3 new container feeder shipping services. MSC will start a significant phase of business development at their new terminal in the port of Le Havre, by receiving the first vessel for three new feeder services. By the end of January, 2013, MSC will offer three new weekly feeder services via Le Havre. Operated by vessels of a unit capacity of 1,600 TEU*, the services will raise the number of weekly maritime calls by the shipping company in Le Havre to 13.

CMA CGM Christens Largest French-Flagged Containership

CMA CGM Group announced the christening of its flagship, the 13,800-TEU CMA CGM Christophe Colomb, at Terminal de France, Port 2000, in Le Havre by its godmother, Christine Lagarde, France’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Industry and Employment. The first of a series of eight vessels named after great explorers, this giant of the seas is the largest containership ever to sail under the French flag. These very large ships will enable the Group to enhance its business model and improve its competitiveness.

New Barge Speeds Le Havre Bunker Options

TOTAL Marine Fuels has increased its bunkering capacity at the port of Le Havre and at the Port 2000 container facilities with the delivery of its new bunkering barge, Cimil. The 4,500 tonne capacity bunker tanker is highly manoeuvrable and can deliver blends and different grades at 500 tph. Christophe Girardot, General Manager TOTAL Marine Fuels, says, "Cimil is a modern and flexible barge which will complement the bunker delivery capacity we have in Le Havre with our current barge ST Sara. It will improve service to our contract clients, mostly liner and cruise operators, while allowing us to offer a replacement to the  ntifer pipeline service for tankers, which is out of service this year.

TOTAL Increases Le Havre Options with New Barge

Total Marine Fuels has increased its bunkering capacity at the port of Le Havre and at the Port 2000 container facilities with the delivery of its new bunkering barge, FS Sara. At the same time, TMF is also making low-sulphur fuel oil available at the French port for the first time. The double-hulled seagoing FS Sara has capacity for 7,500 MT of fuel oil and 500 MT of MGO, and is to start work immediately. TMF products now available at Le Havre include RMK700 (500cSt), IFO 380 / 180, LSFO 380 / 180 and MGO DMA 0.1 percent.

Port Breaks Ground for Container Terminal

Construction has begun on the long-awaited Port 2000, a $600 million expansion of Le Havre's container facilities in its first phase, which, on completion, will provide 12 quayside berths with a total length of 2.5 miles for post-Panamax vessels. The new container terminal will enable the Port of Le Havre to keep pace with its rapid growth in container traffic, which topped 50 percent over the past five years, according to Lacave. "Our goal is to double Le Havre container volumes again to 3 million TEUs by 2007 -- not only for the French market but for a 900-mile radius of Europe reaching into Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Spain," he said.

Le Havre Utilizes Transas Simulator

Pilotage Maritimes du Havre, the famous French pilot station, has chosen a Transas bridge simulator to be used for training professional seafarers at their premises. The contract for supplying and installing the simulator, as well as for dedicated Instructor training, has been secured by Transas Europe GmbH, the official representative of the Transas Group in Western Europe, in close cooperation with Electronic Equipment S.A., their local partner in France. Le Havre Orders New Container Gantry Cranes

The Port of Le Havre has ordered two new container gantry cranes from the Italian company Fantuzzi-Reggiane to be installed at one of its major container terminals, Quay of Bougainville, as part of the Port 2000 expansion project. Delivery is anticipated at the end of 2003. Each of the new cranes has a lifting capacity of 60 tons and will be able to accommodate vessels of 20 container widths, as opposed to the current allowances of 16-17 widths. The distance between rails of the gantry cranes will be 115 feet (35m), which will permit their movement to new berths of Port 2000 as required. The Fantuzzi-Reggiane cranes will operate in excess of 40 moves per hour. The ore terminal at Le Havre, MC6, has ordered a 30-ton crane for the stacking yard to replace two current 15-ton cranes.

Container Gantry Cranes Ordered for MSC/TN Facility at Le Havre

The company SETO has ordered three giant new container gantry cranes from the Chinese group ZPMC to be installed at the future MSC/TN terminal at Port 2000, the new container facility under construction at the Port of Le Havre. SETO is a partnership between the shipping line Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and stevedoring company Terminaux de Normandie (TN), created to secure the necessary investment for shipping development at Le Havre. According to a company statement, SETO's investments to date for straddle carriers, mobile cranes and gantry cranes have surpassed ?32 million (US$31.3 million). SETO has also taken options on the purchase of seven additional cranes.

Port of Le Havre Reports Record Year for Containers

A strong flow of container traffic at the Port of Le Havre in 2002 was responsible for a new record of 20 million metric tons (MT) in the category of general cargo for both import and export, an increase of more than 2 MT from 2001, according to the preliminary results for 2002 released by the port authority. Container tonnage increased to 16.8 MT, up 15.1 percent from 2001. Le Havre handled 1.72 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2002 – nearly 200,000 more than the previous year. Port of Le Havre and Maersk/Perrigault Sign Letter of Intent

A Letter of intent has been signed between the Port of Le Havre and the partnering group of Maersk France S.A. and Perrigault for the operation of two berths in Port 2000, the giant new container facility under construction in Le Havre. The announcement was made following a meeting of the Port’s Board of Directors on December 20, 2002. Maersk France S.A., a division of Maersk Sealand, the world’s largest container shipping line, has paired together with Perrigault, a major stevedoring company at Le Havre, for a two-part initiative: they will create an investment arm in charge of financing new port equipment and will also form a port operations company. Maersk predicts that within two years of the berth’s opening traffic will grow to roughly 600,000 TEUs annually.
