Moran Lays Keel for New USFWS Vessel
Sparks are flying on the keel of the $1.9 million, 57-foot aluminum fisheries research vessel for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), at Moran Iron Works (MIW). The project was announced in November of 2016 when the two parties met for an inaugural meeting in Onaway. Preliminary design of the vessel was performed by Seacraft Design, LLC, with MIW working to finalize the design and construction drawings. “The official laying of keel day was January 23,” said Jason Willis, project manager at MIW.
Moran Iron Works Builds Two Barges for Durocher
Moran Iron Works (MIW) launched two ocean going deck barges last week for Durocher Marine, a division of Kokosing Construction Company Inc. The two deck barges are 180' X 54' X 12' and built in accordance with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations and classifications. KOKOSING IV launched on Monday, April 20 and KOKOSING III launched Tuesday, April 21 at the deep water port at Calcite in Rogers City, Michigan through the company's Port Calcite Collaborative.
Shepler’s New Ferry Takes Shape
Sparks are flying on the bulkhead and engine room of the $3.8 million, 85-foot Miss Margy, the newest addition to the Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry fleet, at Moran Iron Works. Shepler’s Taps Moran Iron Works to Build Ferry
A $3.8 million ferry for Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry will soon be under construction at Moran Iron Works in Onaway, Michigan. The 85-foot, all-aluminum ferry—to be christened Miss Margy—is scheduled to carry its first passengers in July 2015. The keel will be laid in mid-January and the hull completed over the next four months. The ferry will then be launched through Moran’s Port Calcite Collaborative, a deepwater port in Rogers City, Michigan and transported to Shepler’s facility in Mackinaw City, where seating will be installed and painting done. The 281-passenger ferry, Shepler’s largest, will have a top speed of about 40 mph. Shepler’s currently has a fleet of five passenger ferries and one cargo vessel. Miss Margy will be a K Class passenger vessel built in accordance with U.S.
Dept. of Interior Fuel Barge Launched after Repairs
The Greenstone II, a U.S. Department of Interior fuel barge, was relaunched at Port Calcite upon completion of drydocking, repair work and inspections. The barge was hauled out at the Port Calcite facility in late May by Port Calcite Collaborative’s 440-ton Manitowoc 16000 crane. Schwartz Boiler of Cheboygan, Mich. performed the blasting, painting and repair work. Upon inspection and approval by the U.S. Coast Guard, the barge was returned to the water in late June. It has departed for the transit back to its homeport of Houghton, Michigan.
Moran Iron Works Awarded Barge Building Contract
Moran Iron Works (MIW) was recently awarded a contract to build two ocean going deck barges for Durocher Marine, a division of Kokosing Construction Co., based in Cheboygan, Michigan. The two deck barges will be 180’ X 54’ X 12’ with 2,500 lb/ft2 deck strength and 2,400 short ton cargo capacity. They will be built in accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations and classifications. The barges will follow ABS rules for building and classing steel barges for offshore service. They will be classed as ABS A1 Ocean Service Deck Barges and will have an International Load Line Certificate.
