Canada is taking a second crack at developing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export industry on its west coast a decade after soaring costs and indigenous opposition derailed a previous wave of proposed LNG terminals.This time, companies are focusing on smaller west coast projects they bet will be cheaper and faster to build."Smaller project are easier to manage, especially in Canada," Enbridge chief executive Al Monaco told Reuters in an interview. Scale of BC's LNG Terminal Plans Questioned
The British Columbia government has staked its future on natural gas exports, banking on a revenue windfall of at least $100-billion. Yet growing market pessimism and a sudden broadside from large gas consumers is casting fresh doubt on the planned scale of the emerging liquefied natural gas industry, reports the 'Financial Post'. The Pacific Northwest LNG project, located on Lelu Island in the Port Edward district, will liquefy and export natural gas produced in northeastern British Columbia by Progress Energy Canada.
New Canadian LNG Terminal Becoming Real
Pacific Northwest LNG awards FEED contract, takes next step toward an LNG export terminal island on Lelu Island, near Port Edward. The front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract will see three firms working together to design the terminal and work on feasibility studies in the Port Edward area, were awarded to Bechtel, a KBR/JGC joint venture, and a Technip/Samsung Engineering/China Huanqiu joint venture, reports 'The Northern View'. The FEED and Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning bid is expected to be complete by August 2014. McGuigan Appointed to Prince Rupert Port Authority Board
The City of Prince Rupert and district of Port Edward, Canada, have selected David McGuigan as the new Municipal Representative on the Board of Directors of the Prince Rupert Authority. McGuigan’s selection fills the vacant position left from the resignation of Mike Tarr earlier this year. McGuigan is the principal D.K. McGuigan and Associates, a business management consulting firm with a focus on economic development in the Prince Rupert area. McGuigan was formerly a senior account manager in the commercial lending division of CIBC before forming the consulting company in 2001. He is the cofounder and current chair of the North Coast Oil and Gas Task Force and has served on a number of boards throughout his tenure in Prince Rupert.
Premier Supports Development of Offshore Industry
Speaking durig a recent Business Summitt held by the Mayor and City Council of Prince Rupert, Premier Dan Miller voiced his support of the development of the offshore oil and gas industry on the coast of British Columbia. "I am not opposed to it [the lifting of the moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration]," said Premier Miller. From the Mayor and Council Business Summitt came the recommendation that a Canada/British Columbia offshore petroleum board be established. This board is to have decision-making capabilities along the lines of those established in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Currently, there is both federal and provincial legislation preventing offshore oil and gas exploration on Canada's west coast.
