Bayonne Dry Dock & Repair Corp., a full-service ship repair yard located in the Port Jersey area of New York/New Jersey harbor, is the newest participant in Green Marine – a voluntary environmental certification program for North America’s maritime industry.To complete Green Marine’s certification, the Bayonne Dry Dock & Repair Corp. will assess its environmental performance based on the program’s applicable indicators, which address air pollutants and greenhouse gases, spill prevention, waste management, and community impacts. The annual certification process is rigorous and transparent, with the individual performance of each participant independently verified every two years.

The Port of New York is open to all tug and barge traffic carrying petroleum products. New York waterway ferries and taxi service are fully operational on the Hudson and East Rivers. Gravesend Bay anchorage south of the Verrazano Bridge as well as the anchorage north of the bridge is now open. The Hudson River is open to all vessel traffic north of George Washington Bridge. Tugs and barges are permitted to precede along the Arthur Kill waterway from the south with permission by VTS the Caption of the Port. All inspected passenger vessels are authorized to operate except within the noted exclusive zones. Anchorage Ground 21-C in Bay Ridge Flats is open to approved vessel traffic. Global Container Terminals Inc. Global Container Terminals Inc., a leading North American marine terminal operator with facilities on both coasts, has unveiled final plans for a multi-million dollar expansion project to develop a 70-acre technologically advanced container terminal on the Bayonne, NJ, waterfront. When complete, Global Terminal at Port Jersey will be the most advanced marine terminal in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The expanded facility, scheduled to open in 2014, will improve the competitiveness of the Port of New York and New Jersey with a world-class terminal designed to handle the largest container vessels at greater throughput density per acre.

Critical channel-deepening and environmental projects at the Port of New York and New Jersey will continue to advance under a funding bill approved this week by Congress. The deeper channels will allow new, larger ships to enter the harbor, maintaining the port’s competitive edge as the leading port on the east coast of North America. The fiscal year 2004 Energy and Water Development appropriations bill, which funds U.S. Army Corps of Engineers civil works projects, includes $110 million for channel-deepening projects in the port. The funding will allow for the continuation of federal channel-deepening projects under construction in the Kill van Kull-Newark Bay, the Arthur Kill and Port Jersey channels.

Cargo volumes in the Port of New York and New Jersey grew by 5.6 percent in 2001, despite the economic downturn that saw cargo volumes in other North Atlantic ports decline during the year, Port Authority Port Commerce Director Richard M. Larrabee announced. Larrabee said the New York-New Jersey port outperformed all other North Atlantic ports combined, which reported cargo tonnage declines of 1.3 percent. He said that the New York-New Jersey port saw growth in virtually every sector - containerized cargo, bulk, breakbulk and rail activity. Port Authority Executive Director Joseph J. Seymour said, "The Port Authority is moving ahead with a program of investments to keep the port a world-class shipping destination.
