Wärtsilä said it will install its Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) solution at Peru's main harbor, one of Latin America’s most important ports.Dense fog and haze are a consistent challenge for Callao’s port operations, often making shipping conditions dangerous. DP World, a Dubai-based global port operator, announced that it has expanded its business in Peru into a fully-integrated maritime and logistics operation.It has completed the development of the first phase of the deepwater port of Posorja in Ecuador for around $538 million. The whole project is estimated to cost around $1.2 billion.The development of the port by DP World will make Ecuador a trade and logistics hub for South America’s west coast. APM Terminals has become the first Peruvian port to introduce a customer platform that logs, streamlines and coordinate General Cargo operations in the port of Callao.During the pilot phase, the platform, which was developed together with maritime and customs agents, enabled users to complete transactions 67% faster and operations were completed 12% faster.APM Terminals Callao invested nearly USD 1 million in the implementation of MOST, a new state-of-the-art platform that can be used by maritime agents, customs agencies and carriers, among others.MOST can be used to register cargo and view real-time information, make online payments and generate authorizations for the loading and unloading of all types of General Cargo, from anywhere, anytime.

APM Terminals Callao hosted an EU delegation of ambassadors representing 12 EU member states. Led by the EU Ambassador in Peru, Diego Mellado, the visit was of special interest as annual trade between the EU and Peru is more than $10 billion, 60% of which are exports from Peru to the EU. The trade agreement between the EU and Peru celebrated its fifth anniversary this year- and this month, the Lima Chamber of Commerce and Peru Eurocámaras signed an agreement to centralize EU efforts to promote economic development and investment. Peru has seen strong growth in recent years - with the port of Callao experiencing consistent growth of around 10% per annum since 1990, with the exception of 2009 and 2015.

Dubai-based DP World, , one of the world's largest port operators, said it had bought a logistics firm  Cosmos Agencia Maritima (CAM) in Peru for $315.7 million, giving it a 50 percent stake in the country's second largest container terminal. "CAM owns a fully integrated logistics service business (Neptunia S.A and Triton Transport S.A)that offers end-to-end solutions to its customers. The logistics division offers an integrated platform of solutions in activities related to foreign trade, product storage and distribution, as well as freight services that facilitate development and implementation of industry specific projects," said a press release from the company.

The commercial bulk carrier Global Vega rescued seven fishermen in distress on May 21 off the coast of Peru. While Global Vega was sailing from the port of Acajutla, El Salvador, to the port of Callao, Peru, the vessel came upon a fishing boat having engine trouble. Food and fresh water were provided to the fishermen and their boat was moored to Global Vega. Afterward, the fishermen and their boat were safely delivered to the Peruvian Coast Guard. Global Vega is a bulk carrier operated by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK Line. Captain: Arturo F.

APL today announced that its West Coast Service (WCS) will be serving an additional port in Callao, Peru, expanding the service’s port coverage in South America West Coast. “The Port of Callao is the chief seaport of Peru, handling a sizeable volume of its ocean-borne cargo. With the WCS service calling Callao, we are excited about offering shippers access to and from this major gateway for imports and exports,” said Efrain Osorio, APL Regional Director of Latin America & the Caribbean. The first sailing of the enhanced WCS service will commence from Balboa on 5 February 2017, calling the ports of Balboa, Callao, Paita and Guayaquil every week.

Container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd held the naming ceremony for its newest German flagged containership, the Cartagena Express, at the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipyard in Samho, South Korea. “With the Cartagena Express, yet another state-of-the-art ship of our 10,500 TEU fleet is setting sail. In terms of size, design and reefer capacity, it is ideally suited for the traffic between Europe and South America West Coast,” said Anthony J. Firmin, Chief Operating Officer of Hapag-Lloyd.

apag-Lloyd has loaded a metro train with six cars today in Salerno, Italy. The train will be shipped aboard the Cerinthus to the Peruvian port of Callao. From there, it will be transported to the capital Lima using low-loader trucks. The journey from Italy to Peru will take around 29 days. 42 metro trains with a total of 252 cars will be shipped to Peru by February 2019. The modern, driverless trains have been built in Italy and are destined for the newly constructed Line 2 in the Peruvian capital.

Launching the business relationship between the two companies, Ian Taylor Peru has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards Group for an ASD Tug 2810. The vessel’s MTU engine and rapid delivery time were both key aspects of the contract. The two companies are also concluding negotiations for an additional order of a second identical vessel. Ian Taylor Peru, the Peruvian subsidiary of the Chilean group of companies Empresas Taylor, has been active in Peru’s towing sector since 1991. The company currently has four tugs in operation there. Looking to expand the fleet within a short timescale, the company turned to Damen: “We wanted the vessel this year and fortunately Damen had one which could be ready in June,” says Empresas Taylor Chief Legal Officer Jack Howard.

APM Terminals to grant USD$3-million for development of a new modern commercial fishing terminal at the Port of Callao, Peru. The local fishing industry had been concerned about potential displacement with the ongoing construction of a new expanded cargo facility at the port. The recently signed agreement clears a potential obstacle for the scheduled development and expansion of the port’s North Terminal, now operated as APM Terminals Callao. The Callao fishing fleet is comprised of approximately 400 fishing ships, which will now receive improved anchorage and support facilities distanced from the large commercial vessels calling the adjacent new container quay called for in the first phase of the North Terminal expansion project.

TMEIC GE is providing its MaxSpeed crane control system featuring TMdrive-10 controls, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), and Crane Management Systems for DP World’s new container port in Callao, Peru, near the capital, Lima. The new container terminal with one million TEU capacity, will initially be constructed with two berths comprising 650 meters of quay line and 22 hectares of yard, and is expected to be operational second quarter, 2010. The berths will initially be capable of handling vessels of up to 8,000 TEU nominal capacity. A Panamanian ship reportedly collided with two other vessels near the Peruvian port of Callao last Friday, splitting in two and leaving one sailor missing, the Seattle Post Intelligencer reported. 22 crew members from the Panamanian ship were rescued. The container ship first collided with a Cypriot cargo vessel, sustaining heavy damage. Before sinking, it struck a Maltese-flagged ship, causing little damage but knocking one of its crew into the water.
