Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation announced the receipt of a $93 million contract award for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project.Dredging to deepen the entrance channel will commence during the second quarter of 2019 with completion expected in early 2020 said Great Lakes, the largest provider of dredging services in the United States and a major provider of environmental and infrastructure services.It said that the overall ship channel deepening effort will be comprised of multiple phases, expected to be competitively bid and worked over the next five years.

U.S. Oil Exports Boom, Pushing Infrastructure to Limits
Tankers carrying record levels of crude are leaving in droves from Texas and Louisiana ports, and more growth in the fledgling U.S. oil export market may before long test the limits of infrastructure like pipelines, dock space and ship traffic. U.S. crude exports have boomed since the decades-old ban was lifted less than two years ago, with shipments recently hitting a record of 2 million barrels a day. But shippers and traders fear the rising trend is not sustainable, and if limits are hit, it could pressure the price of U.S. oil. How much crude the United States can export is a mystery.

Corpus Christi Ship Channel Reopened
The Corpus Christi Ship Channel is open to restricted operations following a record six-day closure caused by Hurricane Harvey. Harvey has left many Gulf Coast petroleum refining centers either completely shut down or with operations significantly scaled back. An estimated 25 percent of the region’s refining capacity is operational, positioning Corpus Christi as the largest refining center on the Texas Coast that is fully operational. The ship channel’s restricted opening, authorized by the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port, will allow the seven local refineries to startup operations in an effort to serve the already short transportation fuels markets in the region and the nation.
Port of Corpus Starts Recovery after Hurricane Harvey
The Port of Corpus Christi has begun its recovery efforts after initial assessments show light to moderate damage and debris from the impact of Harvey, which hit the major port as a Category 4 hurricane, the port director said on Sunday. "We are completing our initial assessments and are working with the Army Corps of Engineers to start a channel survey as early as tomorrow and expect a successful recovery effort," said John LaRue, the port's executive director.
