German Wind Sector Welcomes Offshore Terminal Funding
The German Offshore Wind Energy Foundation said the government's decision to help fund the expansion of an offshore terminal is important to achieve expansion goals for wind energy at sea.In a statement late Friday, the foundation said it welcomed a government move to contribute to the costs of expanding the terminal at the port of Cuxhaven, on the North Sea coast.The government has agreed to finance the 30-hectare (74 acres) expansion of the offshore terminal, together with the state of Lower Saxony and the private port industry…
Elbe Project: Underwater Storage Areas Completed
The Port of Hamburg announced that in the course of the Elbe's river dredging, construction stones to improve usability for shipping, were successfully build into the "Medemrinne" and "Neufelder Sand".Specifically from March until October 2019, around 1,200,000 tons were build in the above mentioned underwater deposit areas (UDAs).Machulez KG, a member of the Cuxhaven Port Authority (HWG), coordinated the logistics requirements between the underwater construction companies, the quarry and the locally responsible institutions. Deutsche Bucht Completes Offshore Wind Foundations
Northland Deutsche Bucht has completed the installation of all 31 foundations for its offshore wind farm project in the North Sea.The Canadian power producer of Northland Power's third offshore wind farm which is about 95 kilometres to the northwet of the North Sea island of Borkum in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), pointed out that this successfully concludes the first phase of construction within the planned timeframe.Jens Poulsen, Project Director of Northland Deutsche Bucht GmbH, says: “Installation work on the construction site, which is more than 100 kilometers off the coast, is a real challenge in the winter months.
Nordsee One Wind Farm Construction Kicks Off
DEME Group’s offshore marine engineering company GeoSea announced the start of the construction works for the offshore wind farm Nordsee One in the German North Sea. The Nordsee One offshore wind farm (85 percent Northland Power – 15 percent RWE) is situated approximately 40 kilometers north of the island of Juist and consists of 54 wind turbines which will be installed in water depths ranging between 25 and 29 meters. GeoSea’s T&I contract includes the installation of all monopile foundations and transition pieces.
Nor Lines Launches Cuxhaven RoRo Link
The Norwegian shipping company Nor Lines has started a direct weekly RoRo connection between German Port of Cuxhaven and Norway. The first departure of the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered 5,000 dwt short sea cargo vessel MS Kvitbjørn was on May 7. Two new RoRo vessels - vitbjørn and Kvitnos - will be used on this service. ”The favourable location of the CuxPort Terminal, Cuxhaven and its logistics expertise, particularly in the RoRo sector, played a major role in our choice of port,” said Sigurd Ur, Director for Sales & Marketing at Nor Lines. In addition to performing the handling work, Cuxport will also operate as the clearance and booking agent. The port logistics specialist will also carry out the marketing work for Nor Lines in Germany.
Is This a Record? Three Monopiles Installed in 35 Hours
Specialised subsea construction jack-up vessel 'Seajacks Zaratan' continues installation at a rapid pace at the North Sea Meerwind Offshore Park. Seajack Zaratan collected the three 675t steel structures from the construction port of Cuxhaven on the evening of Thursday 11th April. After completing the 110km transit to the German Bight site in 7 hours, Zaratan was jacked up at the first location ready to commence operations on Friday lunchtime and had completed hammering of the third pile by midnight on Saturday, resulting in a net installation time of 35 hours.
Precision Ship-Handling Writ Large
On the Elbe River, the famous port of Hamburg's Nautical Institute had its final intake this year due to a shortage of prospective students. From now on it will be known as the Hamburg Institute for Ship Handling and Simulation, but for many years it sent highly trained young people to sea. Some of those, after gaining years of deep sea experience, returned to Hamburg to become river and docking pilots. The Port has two pilot stations and two pilotage authorities. The Harbor Pilots (Hafenlotsenbrüüderschaft), of which there are about 45, work from a beautiful brick building complete with clock tower on a point at the entrance to the port on the south side of the river where most of the docks are located.
