Near-term Trading Environment Positive, DP World Says

Global port operator DP World on Thursday said the near-term trading environment was positive as it reported a 10.2% increase in first-quarter shipping containers volumes.The Dubai state-owned company handled 18.9 million shipping containers in the January-March period, compared to 17.2 million in the same period a year earlier."This performance is ahead of expectations and illustrates the resilience of the global container industry, and DP World’s continued ability to outperform the market," Chairman and Chief Executive Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said in a statement.

Car Carrier Helios Ray in Dubai for Assessment After Explosion

An Israeli-owned ship hit by an explosion in the Gulf of Oman strategic waterway has arrived at a port in Dubai, where is it is due to be assessed in dry dock.The MV Helios Ray, a vehicle-carrier ship, was hit overnight between Thursday and Friday by a blast above the water line that a U.S. defence official said ripped holes in both sides of its hull.Israel’s defense minister on Saturday said that an initial assessment had found that Iran was responsible for the explosion. DP World Acquires 44% Stake in Swissterminal

Dubai-based global ports operator DP World has taken a 44% stake in Frenkendorf-headquartered Swissterminal Holding, the container terminal operator in Switzerland.The parties have agreed not to disclose financial details of the transaction.Swissterminal, which is headquartered in Frenkendorf close to Basel, operates additional locations in Zurich-Niederglatt, Basel-Birsfelden, Basel-Kleinhueningen and Liestal. DP World to Invest $500 in Jeddah Port Upgrade

The global port operator DP World has been awarded a 30-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) concession by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), for the management and development of the Jeddah South Container Terminal at the multi-purpose Jeddah Islamic Port.According to a press release from the UAE-based world leader in global supply chain solutions, under the agreement, DP World will invest up to $500 million to improve and modernize the Jeddah Islamic Port, including major infrastructure development to enable the Port to serve the ultra-large container carriers (ULCC’s), which are considered the world’s largest mega containerships.Established in 1976, the Jeddah Islamic Port is on the red sea and the largest port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with annual volumes of over 6 million TEU’s.

DP World Reports Lower Quarterly Global Cargo Volumes

Port operator DP World reported on Tuesday a third quarter decline in cargo handled across its global portfolio as volumes fell in Dubai for a sixth consecutive quarter.The operator said it handled 18 million twenty foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers in its ports in the three months to Sept. 30, down 1.6% on the same period a year ago.It said a global trade row created a challenging environment. Djibouti Says Its Container Port to Remain in State Hands

Djibouti's container port will remain in state hands as the government seeks investment, a senior official said on Wednesday in comments likely to reassure Washington where lawmakers say they fear it could be ceded to China. Somalia Bans DP World, Says Contract with Somaliland Null

Somalia has banned Dubai ports operator DP World from operating in Somalia, saying that a contract that the company signed last year with the breakaway Somaliland region to develop an economic zone is null and void. It is unclear how Somalia's federal government could enforce the ban given Somaliland's semi-autonomous status. But parliament's unanimous passing of the resolution banning DP World from working in the country underscored growing rivalries in the strategic Horn of Africa region over the Dubai state-owned port operator's investments.

Kalmar Bags DP World's Container Handlers Order

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded an order to supply DP World's flagship terminal, Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, with the new generation empty container handlers. The order for 13 units has been booked into Cargotec's 2016 fourth quarter order intake. The deliveries will begin in the second quarter of 2017 and they are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017. Commenting on the order, Suresh Ananthanarayan, Kalmar's Key Account Manager for DP World, said: "This is the first order of Kalmar's new range of empty container handlers for the Middle East & Africa region. The new product matches the requirements for the region's busiest and most demanding port and demonstrates Kalmar's advancements in product offering.

DP World Eyes Taiwan Port

Global marine container terminal operator DP World  will help to expand the development of Kaohsiung Port’s Terminal 7, which is owned by the state run Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), in an effort to increase its Asian portfolio. The Dubai ports operator signed a memorandum of understanding with TIPC to develop the terminal. Financial terms were not disclosed. As the first global operator entering the Taiwan market, DP World will bring to the table its international expertise and experience of over four decades spanning a portfolio of 77 inland and marine terminals and handling more than 170,000 TEU a day. Kaohsiung Port enjoys a key geographical location, is an excellent natural harbor and was once among the world’s top container ports.

Dubai Eyes 1 Million Cruise Tourists

Dubai plans to build a marina for luxury yachts in response to high demand as the emirate is targeting one million cruise passengers per year by 2020, said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World and Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation. The increase will mostly come from beefing up infrastructure at the region’s largest cruise terminal, Mina Rashid, which will also include building a marina for luxury yachts. The government is investing heavily to transform its most popular port, Mina Rashid, into a world-class cruise destination. The emirate saw half a million passengers in the 2015-2016 season, a 33% increase over the previous season. The number of cruise ships also rose from 109 to 134.

DP World Awarded Limassol Port Concessions

DP World has been awarded a 25-year concession by the Cypriot government for the exclusive rights to operate Limassol port, the Dubai-based ports operator said on Monday.   Separately, it said that P&O Maritime Cyprus, a wholly-owned subsidiary of DP World, had been awarded a 15-year concession for exclusive provision of a range of port marine services, including tugs and pilotage at the port.   DP World said the concessions were granted in partnership with Cypriot company GAP Vassilopoulos Public, with the Dubai-based company owning 75 percent of the venture.   The start of the concessions is envisaged for Jan. 29 next year, the statement added. VOC Port Begins Cargo Shipping to Dubai

The first regular container service to Dubai from V.O. Chidambaranar Port in India commenced on Tuesday. Chairman of the VOC Port Trust S. Anantha Chandra Bose inaugurated the service being operated by Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal Private Limited on the 8{+t} {+h} berth of the port. Dubai Group Interested in Albania Deepwater Port Project

Dubai companies have expressed their investment interest in the development of Albania's Durres Port and Shengjin Port, according to Xinhua News Agency. Albanian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Edmond Haxhinasto met with the chairman of the DP World group Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem and the delegation accompanying him, reports Xinhua. The Dubai delegation during the two day stay in Albania will visit Durres Port and Shengjin Port. The Port of Durres, the biggest port of Albania, is an artificial basin that is formed between two moles, with a west-northwesterly oriented entrance about 183 metres wide as it passes between the ends of the moles.

DP World, UAE Region, has incorporated Trelleborg’s rubber quality standards into their fender specification for the Quay four refurbishment project at Terminal 1 of Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. Giant Containership CSCL Star Maiden Red Sea Call

Newly opened Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), Jeddah Islamic Port’s flagship terminal, received the world’s largest containership vessel CSCL Star on its first Red Sea call on Tuesday (21st June 2011). With a declared capacity of 14,100 TEU, the CSCL STAR is one of the world’s largest container ships. Drydocks World Repairs Pirate-Attack Damage

Drydocks World has completed a major repair job for a German ship owner on a container vessel extensively damaged by Somali pirates earlier this year. The work, on the 12,600mt dwt 925 teu ship Taipan, was carried out in less than five weeks between 12 April and 15 May. It involved the repair of almost 300 bullet holes and cabling in 80 spots along the 460-ft length by process of fairing and building up, then grinding flush from both sides. Smashed tempered window glass was fully replaced, including 18 full panels in the wheelhouse.

Emerson Wins Contract with Golar LNG

Emerson Process Management has won a contract from Golar LNG to supply PlantWeb digital automation architecture for basic process control and safety systems on the Golar Freeze, a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) vessel. Currently an LNG carrier, the Golar Freeze will be converted into a floating terminal, and docked at a purpose-built jetty in the Jebel Ali Port near Dubai, UAE. Golar will operate the vessel. Dubai Supply Authority (Dusup) will operate the jetty and the high pressure export line into Dubai to supply needed gas during high energy demand months in the summer.

DP World Invests $300M in Port Security

Dubai Ports World (DP World), the world's third-largest port operator, is investing around $300m in port security, local newspaper Gulf News reported recently. The money will be used to secure 42 terminals worldwide, according to DP World's director of security David Fairnie. DP World has commissioned a three-tier foolproof container security initiative that involves X-ray, radiation and Optical Container Recognition (OCR), according to Fairnie. These can detect any radiation being emitted from the container, while the OCR captures container data and manages the supply chain. The company has also employed closed-circuit television (CCTV), alarm systems as well as anti-invasion systems across all its ports and terminal facilities.

Costa Crociere is the first international cruise company to homeport from Dubai, offering travelers uniquely rich itineraries throughout the Gulf region. The new cruises from Dubai will be offered throughout the 2006/2007 winter season, with additional capacity offered in the 2007-2008 season.
