Fincantieri to Open Support Facility in Everett

AAPA Elects Strawbridge as Next Board Chairman

Trade group the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) elected a new Chairman of the Board of Directors, Sean Strawbridge of the Port of Corpus Christi, last week during its 111th Annual Convention and Expo in Orlando, Fla. Outgoing Chairman Mario Cordero of the Port of Long Beach made the formal announcement during his address to members and attendees.AAPA President and CEO Chris Connor remarked on the transition, "Our work at AAPA is bolstered by the leadership and input of our chairperson and board of directors.

Everett Ship Repair Names New Drydock

On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, Everett Ship Repair, LLC (ESR) hosted a naming ceremony and grand opening for their newest drydock, the Emerald Lifter. The Emerald Lifter, formally the Zidell 220, was relocated to ESR’s facility at the Port of Everett last month. ESR performed maintenance and preservation before it was put into operation on May 3, with it’s first drydocking.The Emerald Lifter has a lifting capacity of 2,000 tons and a working deck of 220’ x 62’. Everett Ship Repair Adds Crane Barge and Second Dry Dock

Everett, Wash. repair yard Everett Ship Repair announced it is expanding through the addition of a crane barge and second dry dock.ESR said it recently purchased the dry dock Zidell 220 to be relocated to its facility at the Port of Everett for operation by early spring 2022. The dry dock, with lifting capacity of 2,000 tons and working deck area of 220 feet by 62 feet, will be renamed Emerald Lifter in tribute to Puget Sound, which is also known as the Emerald Sea.ESR said it will also bring in a 150-ton Link Belt LS518 lattice boom crawler crane with 150 ft.

Washington State Ferries' Largest Vessel Enters Drydock

Washington State Ferries' (WSF) Jumbo Mark II class ferry Wenatchee, the largest in the WSF fleet, entered drydock at Everett Ship Repair, LLC (ESR) on November 10.The vessel is 460’ x 90’ with a docking displacement of 4675 LT. Port of Everett Facelifts South Terminal

Foss Maritime departed the Port of Everett enroute to the Port of Los Angeles to pick up two gantry cranes for use at the Port’s modernized South Terminal.The $57 million South Terminal Modernization project will ensure the Port’s facilities are ready to support the next generation of over-dimensional cargo, including aerospace parts for the new 777X. The two cranes are a critical piece in this loading and unloading efficiency.“The completion of this upgrade will add another full-service berth at the Port to accommodate project, bulk, breakbulk, high and heavy and containerized cargoes,” said Carl Wollebek, the Port’s Chief Operating Officer.

Port of Everett Earns Marad Short Sea Shipping Designation

The Port of Everett has achieved another vital step in reducing congestion on the I-5 corridor while moving more freight in the region. The Port was notified this month that it received designation by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation as a Federal Maritime Administration Marine Highway Project for the Puget Sound Container on Barge Service under the America’s Marine Highway Program.The Port is one of 25 marine highway projects in the nation, and the only marine project designation on the West Coast.

Port of Everett Becomes First Port to Receive Federal Rail Loan

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Build America Bureau will provide up to a $5.95 million Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) loan to the Port of Everett in the State of Washington. The Port of Everett is the first Port to make it through the complex loan process.“I’ve been proud to work with the Port of Everett to secure federal investments to ensure the Port continues to meet the demands of the 21st century economy, and I’m thrilled to see the federal government bring even more resources to the table. This investment will help complete vital modernization projects and support an important economic hub in Washington state,” said U.S.

Port of Everett Begins Wharf Modernization Project

The Port of Everett hosted a groundbreaking to commemorate the start of construction on the Port’s South Terminal Modernization project – the largest capital project in Port history by dollar value, and the largest maritime construction project on the West Coast.The $36 million South Terminal Modernization project will ensure the Port’s facilities are ready to support the next generation of over-dimensional cargo, including aerospace parts for the new 777X.“I find it fitting that as we celebrate the Port of Everett’s centennial year in 2018, we continue to be forward-thinking, preparing the Port’s infrastructure to carry us into our next 100 years,” said Glen Bachman, Port of Everett Commission President.

Shipping Partnerships Create Economic Opportunity in Everett

Every month Eastern Car Liner (ECL) loads aerospace containers for transport back to Japan to be reloaded with new airplane parts. Typically, this is the only cargo loaded on this vessel at the Port of Everett – until recently. This weekend, for the second time, Everett-based log supplier, Forest Marketing Enterprises, Inc. (FORMARK) will be delivering nearly 3.3 million board feet of logs to the Port of Everett to be loaded under deck of the ECL chartered ship. This shipment is the second of six total shipments for the year, of what is expected to be a multi-year business partnership. “This is a strategic partnership that will benefit jobs, commerce and natural resources in Everett and Washington State,” said Carl Wollebek, Chief Operating Officer at the Port of Everett.

U.S. Awards $61.8 Mln for Port Projects

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Fox today announced 40 awards totaling nearly $500 million in funding for the  FY 2016 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants. Of the 585 applications submitted totaling $9.3 billion in requests, six awards totaling $61.8 million – or about 12.36 percent of the total funding – are going to commercial seaports or projects that directly aid the efficient movement of goods to and from America’s ports. Port applications totaled 9 percent, or 53, of the total 585 submitted. In his written statement, Sec. Shell Rig Departs for Arctic Despite Protest

U.S. Coast Guard and police boats cleared a way through protesters in kayaks at a Seattle-area port on Tuesday so a drilling ship could head for the Arctic on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell. The Noble Discover is the second drilling ship Shell has sent to the area in recent days. The activists, who have staged frequent demonstrations during the past two months against Royal Dutch Shell's oil exploration in the Chukchi Sea off mainland Alaska, said 21 protesters in kayaks took to the waters just beyond the Port of Everett north of Seattle where the oil rig launched for sea. The activists had entered the safety zone around the Noble Discover and were intercepted by small boats of the U.S.

Everett College to Launch New Research Boat

Everett Community College’s Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA) will launch its new research vesel on November 22 with a celebration at 11 a.m. at the Port of Everett. The dedication of the Phocoena (the scientific name for harbor porpoise, pronounced FOE see nuh) will happen at the port’s travel lift, located in front of ORCA’s classrooms at 1205 Craftsman Way in Everett. The 36-foot Phocoena was funded by a $218,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and built by Bean Custom Marine Fabrication.

AAPA Honors Three for Port Industry Service

The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) – a trade group representing ports throughout the Western Hemisphere – today at its 103rd Annual Convention and Expo in Houston honored three port industry leaders. Receiving AAPA’s Distinguished Service Award were former Port of Seattle CEO Tay Yoshitani and Dr. Bory Steinberg, founder and principal of the water resources advisory firm of Steinberg & Associates, and a former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works Program chief. Receiving AAPA’s ImPORTant Service Award was Port of Everett (Wash.) CEO John Mohr. Port of Everett Seaport Adds Lift Capacity

The Port of Everett Seaport is adding additional lift capacity to its operations in March 2015, with the purchase of a new, 150-ton GHMK 7608 mobile harbor crane. The nearly $5.1 million investment, which was authorized by the Port Commission, will allow the Port of Everett to better accommodate its niche market of overdimensional cargoes, and provide opportunity to compete for new heavylift business. “We are investing in our infrastructure and cargo handling equipment to continue with our reputation of safe and excellent service, quick and efficient turnaround times and huge lift capacity,” said Carl Wollebek, the Port of Everett’s Chief Operating Officer.

Port of Everett Solicits Bids for Nearly $6 million marina cleanup project

ESY In-water cleanup area Everett, Wash. – Last month, the Port of Everett began soliciting bids for the final phase of its Everett Shipyard Cleanup project, located along West Marine View Drive between 15th and 14th Street. The mostly in-water cleanup project has a price tag of between $5.2 million and $6 million. The cleanup, which is being done in partnership with the state’s Department of Ecology, will be a catalyst establishing the environmental health and economic prosperity to this highly visible section of the marina. The project represents the final phase of the Everett Shipyard Cleanup and the first phase of the Central Docks Improvement project.

Historic Schooner Adventuress to Offer Tours at the Port of Everett

Historic Schooner AdventuressEverett, Wash. - National Historic  Landmark, the schooner Adventuress, will make its annual sail to visit the Port of Everett Marina April 26 - 29. The 133-foot, two-masted wooden ship will tie up at the Port of Everett’s South Guest Dock 1 near Anthony’s Homeport restaurant. Ship crews will offer free dockside tours aboard the vessel on Sunday, April 27 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. A public sail is available for purchase following the tours from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. The ship tours and public sail are designed for all ages and offer a great educational opportunity.

USS Nimitz Transits Suez Northbound to Mediterranean

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier 'USS Nimitz' (CVN 68) and her escort, guided-missile cruiser 'USS Monterey' (CG 61), which had earlier been operating in the Red Sea transit the Suez Canal. USS Nimitz will operate in the Mediterranean Sea and train with international partners before returning to her home port of Everett, WA. The aircraft carrier entered the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations, June 9, 2013.
