Italian Police Make Major Heroin Haul on Ship From Iran
Italian police discovered 270 kg (600 lb) of heroin hidden in a container that arrived aboard a ship from Iran, the biggest such haul for at least 20 years in Italy, police said on Thursday.The freighter had set sail from the Iranian Gulf port of Bandar Abbas and stopped off in Hamburg, Germany and Valencia, Spain before reaching the Italian port of Genoa on Oct. 17, where police discovered the heroin stashed away in a consignment of Bentonite clay.A police spokesman said investigators were not sure when or where the drugs were brought onto the ship.Police allowed a small portion of the illicit cargo to continue its planned journey by truck to the Netherlands.They tracked the vehicle as it crossed Switzerland…
Two New Tugs for Rimorchiatori Riuniti
Italian tug operator Rimorchiatori Riuniti has continued its fleet expansion with the deliveries of two new Damen tugs; an ASD 2913 called Danimarca and an ASD 2411 called Columbia. The delivery of the Danimarca took place in Genoa on June 14, 2017. This new tug will join the ASD 2913 Germania that joined the company’s fleet at the beginning of the year. Like her sister vessel, the Danimarca has also been installed with FiFi 1 and an aft winch, in addition to oil recovery and escort capabilities.
Another Tug for Rimorchiatori Riuniti
Rimorchiatori Riuniti has taken delivery of a Damen ASD 2913. The new vessel – named Germania – was handed over to the Italian tug operator last week from Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania. The delivery follows Rimorchiatori Riuniti’s order for a second, identical vessel; the contract for which was also finalized at the end of December. Nele Maersk Spills Oil off Spain
Last night, Nele Maersk container ship, bound for Genoa with 21 crew on board, informed Spanish Maritime Safety Agency (Salvamento Maritimo) that there had been an accidental spillage of fuel during a routine operation of fuel transfer between tanks. The spill area is 140 km from the Catalan coast and 100 km from the Balearic Islands. Salvamento Maritimo mobilized various means to perform aerial survey and minimize the effects of the spill. Activated means are Helimer 206 helicopter, the vessel Punta Mayor, Aldebaran Salvamar Sasemar boat and plane 101.

Those killed in the collision of the Jolly Nero one year ago on May 7, 2013 were remembered in a memorial Mass celebrated by the Cardinal of Genoa, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco. Seafarers’ charity Apostleship of the Sea also held a commemoration in Genoa at the hour of tragedy on Wednesday to offer support and prayers for survivors and families affected. The bulk of the Costa Concordia cruise liner that capsised off the Tuscany coast in 2012, killing 32 people, will be demolished and scrapped in the port of Genoa, the Italian government decided on Monday. The decision for the work to be done in Genoa, in northern Italy, followed a choice last month by Costa Cruises for a consortium including oil services company Saipem and Genoa-based companies Mariotti and San Giorgio. After nearly 43 years in the cruise business, Maurice M. Zarmati is retiring as president and CEO of Costa Cruises North America, effective November 30, 2011. He will remain with the line as a senior consultant on Costa’s worldwide sales, marketing and passenger-traffic initiatives. Zarmati, 65, became president and CEO of Costa Cruises North America in March 2008. Italian Port of Genoa Gets EU Upgrade Grant
The European Union will co-finance with €3.9 million from the TEN-T Programme a project to extend one of the terminals and renew the intermodal infrastructure of the northern Italian Port of Genoa. The project, which was selected for funding under the 2012 TEN-T Annual Call, concerns works aimed at adapting the Port’s infrastructure to larger ships. The Port of Genoa, as a major national port and southern European gateway, needs to be prepared for the future traffic demand increase and to adapt its port layout to the new market requirements.
Adelte Wins Contracts for 8 Boarding Bridges
Adelte, a designer and manufacturer of sophisticated Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges (SPBBs) for cruise and ferry terminals has recently won eight contracts for the supply in 2014 of a total of eleven tailor-made SPBBs to the ports of Rotterdam, Stornoway, Swinoujscie and Ullapool in Northern Europe, Denia and Savona in Southern Europe and Busan and Singapore in Asia. Adelte has been awarded a contract by the Rotterdam Port Authority to install this summer a new KRONUS SPBB, which will replace the current system.
