Members of the OCEAN ALLIANCE, COSCO Container Lines, CMA CGM, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line,  signed a document entitled the Day One Product, which sets out the proposed OCEAN ALLIANCE’s network, including port rotation for each service loop. The Day One network intends to deploy around 350 container vessels with an estimated total carrying capacity of 3.5 million TEUs to provide one of the most comprehensive service coverage in the market on the following trade lanes. Maersk Line will add a call at the port of Laem Chabang in Thailand on its Boomerang service starting from October 2015. This unique setup offers Thai exporters and importers with the first and only direct service between Thailand and Australia. The weekly service will connect Thailand to main ports in Australia: Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Two Military Sealift Command ships delivered hundreds of pieces of U.S. Marine Corps equipment and containerized supplies to Thai ports in late January as preparations ramped up for Exercise Cobra Gold 2009, the major multi-national exercise scheduled for Feb. 4 - 17 in Thailand. Cobra Gold is a regularly scheduled joint and coalition multinational exercise hosted annually by the Kingdom of Thailand. Armed forces from Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and the United States are participating.

Some long awaited funding has finally been released from the Federal Government to shore up port security across the nation. Yester, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, announced new port security initiatives and investments. Funding includes the second phase of the Container Security Initiative (CSI), $170 million in port security grants, and $58 million in funding for Operation Safe Commerce. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) welcomed the DHS announcement naming recipients of $245 million in federal grants for security enhancements at U.S. ports and related maritime facilities. An additional $58 million was also announced for Operation Safe Commerce.

U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Robert C. Bonner announced that the Container Security Initiative (CSI) becomes operational today at the port of Genoa, Italy. CBP and the government of Italy signed a declaration of principles on November 7, 2002. As part of the CSI program, CBP has deployed a team of officers to the port of Genoa to work with host government personnel to target high-risk cargo containers destined for the United States. Italian government officials are responsible for screening any container identified jointly with CBP officers as a potential terrorist risk. The port of Genoa is the 14th CSI port to become operational.

Thailand has signed a Declaration of Principles, establishing the Container Security Initiative (CSI) in the Port of Laem Chabang. With Thailand’s participation, CSI agreements are now in place for 19 of the 20 largest ports trading to the United States.
