Saipem's giant Saipem 7000 semi-submersible crane vessel is set to return to operation at the Seagreen wind farm site in the UK a month and a half after it was involved in a tilting incident in Norway. As previously reported, in mid-April, Saipem 7000 tilted in a fjord in Norway with 275 people aboard. Geophysical seismic surveys and port security may appear to have little in-common. However, it turns out that managing complex marine seismic operations, where 10km-long seismic streamers have to be deployed harmoniously alongside other offshore marine assets, isn’t that dissimilar to managing – and protecting – port facilities. It's an area that ION Geophysical, more known for seismic data acquisition technology, has recently been proving its expertise in, using its Marlin system for marine operations management.

Cargo Vessel Refloated

According to the BBC, a stricken cargo vessel which ran aground near a harbor has been re-floated following a major operation. The MV Emsland, laden with 1,776 tons of timber, got into trouble shortly after it left the Port of Montrose, in Angus, on December 29. After bringing in specialized equipment, the ship was freed on Thursday afternoon, according to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Despite earlier concerns, no pollutants were released into the water. A salvage team, which arrived in the area earlier in the week, had been working to remove some of the cargo and diesel oil from the 270-ft. ship to make it lighter. The Emsland had been taking water into two of its ballast tanks and concern had been raised that a leakage could threaten the local seabird population.
