Naples Mayor Offers to Welcome in Stranded NGO Migrant Boat

Naples is ready to defy Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and let in a charity-run ship carrying 32 migrants that is blocked in the stormy Mediterranean, the city mayor said on Thursday.His offer adds to a growing challenge from opposition politicians to Salvini's far-right League, which has vowed to bar migrants and make life difficult for those already here.Both Italy and Malta are refusing to let the Sea-Watch 3, a ship operated by a German non-governmental organisation (NGO), dock and set down the migrants who were rescued off Libya on Dec. 22.Both countries say they have taken in too many migrants and accuse NGO rescue ships…

Next Geosolutions Surveys Roman Ports

Next Geosolutions, an independent geoscience and engineering service provider, has secured a €1.25million (£1million) mapping and survey contract with Naples Port Authority for the Archaeological Sites Mapping Project, based in the Port of Naples. The project, which commenced in July and is due for completion by December 2016, will see Next Geosolutions carry out marine survey techniques including high-resolution bathymetry, morphology, shallow geology and magnetometric surveys of the Port’s internal waters. Two Boat Migrants Die, 1,500 Saved Off Italy

Two boat migrants died among almost 1,500 rescued by Italy in the last 24 hours, authorities said on Friday as the total number reaching Italian shores this year passed 100,000. Italy's interior minister said it was "proud to be saving lives" of migrants who have been streaming out of North Africa in rickety boats in increasing numbers for years and without its efforts the Mediterranean would have become a "lake of death". But Angelino Alfano repeated Rome's position that the burden for patrolling the sea and saving migrants from Africa's shores must quickly pass to the European Union as a whole. Ceremony of delivery, this morning, at the Uljanik Shipyards of Pola, of the vessel‘’Grande Anversa’’, built for Grimaldi Group Naples. Godmother of the vessel: Mrs Camille Delwaide, wife of the President of the Antwerp Port Authority, Baron Leo Delwaide. The choice to name the vessel after the city of Antwerp is an act of gratitude towards a city and a port representing Grimaldi Group Naples a hub for its traffic flows between North Europe, North and South America, West Africa and the Mediterranean.

CSI Operational in Naples

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated that the Container Security Initiative (CSI) has become operational in the Port of Naples, Italy. CBP personnel are working with their Italian counterparts to identify shipping containers in the Port of Naples that need additional scrutiny before being loaded on ships bound for the United States.

CSI Operational in Livorno, Italy

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Robert C. Bonner and Italian Customs Director General Mario Andrea Guaiana announced the Port of Livorno as the 33rd operational Container Security Initiative (CSI) port. The stand-up of Livorno completes the expansion of the Container Security Initiative in Italy. CSI developed along the guidelines set forth in the declaration of principles signed in November 2002 between Commissioner Bonner and Italian Customs Director General Mario Andrea Guaiana. CSI has been operational at the ports of Genoa and LaSpezia since June 2003. Most recently, the port of Naples became operational on September 30, 2004, and the port of Gioia Tauro on October 29, 2004.
