Shipping group CMA CGM has reinforced its Europe / Indian Ocean & Australia offering by upgrading its NEMO service, which liaises North Europe and the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean Islands and Australia on the southbound leg and Australia to southeast Asia and Europe on the northbound leg.This upgraded service will be effective in September 2019 and operated in partnership with MSC, subject to applicable filing requirements.CMA CGM said the new offer will feature an upgraded fleet and provide expanded port coverage through a better utilization of hubs offering dedicated feeder services.

A gastro outbreak has affected nearly 200 passengers aboard one of the world’s largest cruise ships, Ovation of the Seas. The 168,666 GT cruise liner docked in Hobart on December 5 following a 14-night cruise from Singapore. Over the two weeks, 195 cases of gastro-intestinal illness were reported, the ship’s owner Royal Caribbean said in a statement. There are 5,824 people on board, including guests and crew. “Those affected by the short-lived illness were treated by our ship’s doctors with over-the-counter medication,” Royal Caribbean said.

Royal Australian Navy will commission the first of three new destroyers today (On 23 September). In continuing our reflective stories of previous ships that have carried the name HMAS Hobart, this is the story of Hobart (II). The second ship to bear the name Hobart was one of three Perth class guided missile destroyers built in the United States for the Royal Australian Navy. She was commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard on 18 December 1965 under the command of Captain Guy Griffiths. Following sea trials and exercises in the United States and Canadian waters, Hobart arrived in her namesake city on 1 September 1966. She berthed in her home-port of Sydney for the first time on 7 September 1966.

The Royal Australian Navy’s new Multi-role Aviation Training Vessel (MATV) MV Sycamore has passed sea trials. Following final vessel handover from builder Damen Shipyards Group, MV Sycamore will perform diverse training and support duties. In addition to the more traditional elements of sea trials such as maneuvering and speed tests, the MV Sycamore was put through her paces with an extensive testing program of all on-board military systems, including testing of the air traffic radar…

The Harbor Port Development Partners (HPDP) and the Port of Sydney announce the new brand for Sydney’s new container terminal: NOVAPORTE and its adjacent logistics park NOVAZONE. “The name reflects the international nature of our project”, said Albert Barbusci, Chief Executive Officer of HPDP. “NOVA is Latin for new and port is spelled with an E to recognize that this will be both a gateway and transshipment hub”, he added. The adjacent Logistics Park will be known as NOVAZONE. Both will operate within a recognized Foreign Trade Zone. Sydney has set aside nearly 2,000 acres for development of this project. The harbor is dredged down 16.5 meters and can accommodate even the largest Ultra Large Container Vessels.

The Mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) and the City of Dalian, Liaoning Province in the People’s Republic of China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) laying the ground work for an official sister city relationship between the two regions and port cities. Like Sydney, Dalian is a port city. It boasts the largest ice free harbor in northern China and is one of the most modern in the world. It is the second largest transshipment hub in China and processes more than 10 million containers a year. Sydney is an active cruise, ferry and bulk cargo harbor.

China Communications Construction Co. Ltd (CCCC). has agreed to build a highly automated container terminal in Sydney Harbour, depending on the results of a feasibility study to be conducted next year. Albert Barbusci, CEO of Harbor Port Development Partners (HDP), said that his company, which has the exclusive right to market the port of Sydney, has signed a deal with China Communications Construction Company related to the design, construction and ownership of a deep-water container terminal in Sydney. It’s expected the multi-year development of the port will cost more than $1 billion. HDP also says discussions are underway on a potential equity stake in the project by the Chinese firm.

Liebherr Container Cranes has recently completed the testing of articulated boom cranes in its Killarney facility in Ireland. The complete articulated boom and main beam of one of the cranes for Port Botany was assembled in Liebherr Container Cranes facility on a special test bed, where it was tested. This articulated boom design allows these large cranes to operate within the height restrictions prevailing at Port Botany, due to its close proximity to Sydney airport, Liebherr said.

The Australian Navy ship HMAS Choules and her MRH 90 helicopter have been involved in the air and sea search for two people believed lost from the Carnival Line cruise ship Carnival Spirit off the New South Wales mid-north coast. HMAS Choules joined the search on Thursday afternoon as she was returning from North Queensland where she was conducting amphibious training exercises. The ship and her helicopter have now been released from the search which was co-ordinated by the New South Wales Water Police. Choules is now on her way to her home port in Sydney.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM), located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, today launched a marketing campaign to promote the strategic advantages of developing a container shipping port terminal in Sydney harbor. The announcement comes after CBRM recently agreed to purchase approximately 500 acres of greenfield waterfront land for the purpose of building a container terminal that will create jobs and lasting economic benefit for the community of Cape Breton. The regional municipality, second largest in Nova Scotia, will explore the potential of entering a long-term concession agreement with an interested terminal operator.

Delta Scientific announced that its anti-terrorist barriers are now protecting the international cruise ship terminal at the Port of Sydney Harbor in Australia. Delta’s DSC501 barriers lie flat in the road until activated, at which point they spring up at a 45-degree angle and effectively stop a speeding vehicle in its tracks. The DSC501 barricade stops and destroys a 15,000 lb (66.7 kN) vehicle traveling 50 mph (80 kph). Set in a foundation only 18 inches (46 cm) deep, the Delta DSC501 is able to survive and operate after a 1.2 million foot pound impact. Upon extracting the vehicle after its crash test, the barricade was fully functional and performed a resounding 27,000 additional cycles.
