The Greek island of Corfu welcomed its first cruise ship of the new season on Tuesday, hoping much awaited tourists will help salvage losses incurred during 2020 due to the coronavirus.Corfu port authorities said some 600 tourists from countries including Italy, France and Germany were on board the Costa Luminosa, operated by Italy's Costa Cruises, and all safety measures were being adhered to in the port.Some of the passengers expressed their delight at being able to travel again."It's freedom, enjoying life, you really feel much better. Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri hosted a float-out ceremony for a new cruise ship under construction for Carnival Corporation’s Italian brand Costa Cruises. The new ship, Costa Venezia, is Costa’s first ship designed and built specifically for the Chinese market.“As our first ship built specifically for the Chinese market, Costa Venezia marks a new era not just for Costa Cruises and Fincantieri but for the Chinese cruise industry as a whole,” said Mario Zanetti, president of Costa Group Asia.

Lifting the U.S. ban on oil exports would bolster energy security in Europe by allowing countries to find alternative sources, the Czech Republic ambassador to the United States told lawmakers considering a bill to do away with the trade restriction. "The larger the number of stable democracies among the world's exporters, the more robust the energy security of the Czech Republic and the European Union will be," Petr Gandalovic, the ambassador told the panel the House subcommittee on Energy and Power on Thursday. The country has worked to reduce its dependence on oil and gas from Russia, the top energy supplier to many Eastern European countries. A recently built oil pipeline connects the Czech Republic to the Italian port of Trieste via Germany.

The final shipment of gates has arrived to the Panama Canal today for the new locks as part of the canal’s expansion project. The four gates arrived on board the Post-Panamax vessel Xia Zhi Yuan 6 owned by COSCO Ocean Shipping, after a 25-day voyage from the Port of Trieste in Italy. In another step forward for the Panama Canal Expansion Program, the second shipment of four rolling gates for the Third Set of Locks arrived today from port of Trieste, Italy to the waterway's Atlantic side on board the semi-submersible heavy lift vessel Sun Rise. "This is another milestone as it completes half of the 16 gates that will be used in the new locks", said the administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, Jorge Luis Quijano. Following a nearly one-month long journey, the ship completed its second trip that began in mid-May in the Port of Trieste, crossing the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Differing from the first shipment, these gates have two different dimensions, according to their final position in the lock chambers.

In a major milestone for the Panama Canal Expansion Program, the first four gates for the new locks have arrived from the port of Trieste, Italy to the waterway's Atlantic side on board the semi-submersible vessel 'STX Sun Rise'. "This is an exciting moment for the Panama Canal - the arrival of the new gates marks a great progress for this engineering project," Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano said. Built by subcontractor Cimolai SpA, the first four gates are 57.6 m long, 10 m wide and 30.19 m high, and weigh an average of 3,100 tons.

Spanish builder Astilleros Armón recently delivered one tug boat powered by two MAN 7L27/38 four-stroke engines and is close to delivering another powered by two similar 9L27/38 engines. The vessels are bound for separate companies of the Italian ‘Ocean Group’. The first project involved the construction of the ‘Neptun’, a Voith-Schneider Tractor Tug constructed at Astilleros Armón Navia in Asturias, Spain as construction C-701. The vessel is powered by two MAN 7L27/38 engines, each developing 2,380 kW at 800 rpm, and was launched in February 2011 with delivery to Adria Tow of Slovenia following in June. Adria Tow was founded in 1992 and provides vessel towing services in the Port of Koper, the largest commercial port on the Slovenian Adriatic coast.

Genoa – May 4 , 2011 – The Costa Favolosa, the new flagship of Costa Cruises, which is the largest Italian travel group, Europe’s no.1 cruise company and the only cruise operator whose fleet flies the Italian flag, has been dry-docked in the Port of Trieste until mid-May. The Port of Trieste has advised that, with effect from March 3 2010, vessels using fuels with a sulphur content exceeding 0.1% by mass (in contravention of EU Directive 2005/33/EC) will be prosecuted with fine of between Euros 15,000 and 150,000 (usually 30,000 for the first offence). Exemption to the law will not be granted anymore and all eventual special authorizations issued in the past are cancelled, it states. INTERTANKO said that this means ship and port safety may be sacrificed purely in order to generate local harbor funds. Firefighters extinguished a blaze that erupted aboard a Turkish cargo ship off Croatia's coast three days ago and had raised fears of major pollution, AFP reported. A team of Dutch firefighters and their Croatian counterparts were aboard the ship to assess the situation and inspect the vessel. The Und Adriyatik ship was being kept four miles away from Croatia's northern coast by tugboats. According to reports, the Turkish company that owns the ship said the vessel was likely to be towed to the Italian Adriatic port of Trieste. The authorities said earlier the ship, which was transporting 200 trucks and nine tonnes of oil derivatives, would not be allowed to leave Croatian waters before it is completely cleaned up.
