Thousands of longshore workers at Canada's biggest port, the Port of Vancouver, were locked out on Thursday, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.The B.C. Panama Frees Vessel Held in Western Sahara Claim
Panama authorities have released a Moroccan phosphate shipment from the disputed Western Sahara territory after it was temporarily held by a legal challenge from the Polisario independence movement, officials said on Monday. The vessel was held on May 18 and is the second tanker carrying phosphate cargo from Moroccan exporter OCP stopped this month by a Polisario challenge. Polisario claims the cargo was transported illegally, a new tactic in its dispute with Morocco. Western Sahara has been disputed since 1975, when Morocco claimed it as part of the kingdom and the Polisario fought a guerrilla war for the Sahrawi people's independence. A 1991 ceasefire split the region in two between what Morocco calls its southern provinces and an area controlled by Polisario.

Vancouver Port Hires Marle as Permanent CEO
The Port of Vancouver USA Board of Commissioners today voted 2-1 to hire interim CEO Julianna Marler as the port’s permanent CEO/Executive Director. Marler, who was appointed interim CEO by the board in May 2016, was one of three finalists for the position. The other two were Edward Galligan, current Executive Director of the Port of Olympia, and Arthur Scheunemann, former President and CEO of the Economic Development Council of Seattle and King County. “We had three highly qualified candidates, and that made this a hard decision,” said commission President Brian Wolfe.

Hanjin Containership Set to Dock in Vancouver
A container vessel that spent months sitting off Canada's west coast due to the collapse of a major South Korea shipping company is set to dock in Vancouver on Thursday, port and union officials said. The Hanjin Scarlet, with nearly 800 containers on board, has been sitting some 45 km (28 miles) outside of Prince Rupert for several months, said Peter Lahay, an inspector and coordinator with the International Transport Workers Federation. Emily Hamer, a spokeswoman at the Port of Vancouver, confirmed that the vessel would be arriving at the port. She referred questions about the ship's cargo to terminal operator DP World.
