Trade group the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) elected a new Chairman of the Board of Directors, Sean Strawbridge of the Port of Corpus Christi, last week during its 111th Annual Convention and Expo in Orlando, Fla. Outgoing Chairman Mario Cordero of the Port of Long Beach made the formal announcement during his address to members and attendees.AAPA President and CEO Chris Connor remarked on the transition, "Our work at AAPA is bolstered by the leadership and input of our chairperson and board of directors.

The Port of Vancouver USA received a shipment of wind turbine components on July 22 that included the longest wind turbine blades ever to enter the West Coast of the U.S. and transported across North America, to-date. The port received a total of nine wind turbines including blades, nacelles, generators, hubs, tower sections and other sub-components. Eight of Goldwind’s GW155/4.2 MW turbines arrived on the MV Star Kilimanjaro. There are four complete turbines featuring Goldwind’s 76-meter blades and four additional turbines of the same model with blades arriving on later shipments.

U.S. Navy vehicle carrier USNS Brittin arrived at the Port of Vancouver USA Friday for a stay that will last approximately 90 days while the ship undergoes annual maintenance and inspections required by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the U.S. Coast Guard. The Port of Vancouver USA Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the port’s tax levy and 2019 budget during its regularly scheduled board meeting.The U.S. West Coast port's commission voted to hold the port levy steady for the seventh year in a row, meaning annual taxes on a $350,000 home – the median price in Clark County – will be approximately $85 in 2019.At $58.4 million, the port’s 2019 budget is $10.1 million less than its 2018 budget. The decrease is primarily due to a shift from a multi-year construction program to maintenance of the port’s public assets.More than 30 strategies from the port’s 2018 Strategic Plan will be implemented.

The Port of Vancouver USA Board of Commissioners today voted 2-1 to hire interim CEO Julianna Marler as the port’s permanent CEO/Executive Director. Marler, who was appointed interim CEO by the board in May 2016, was one of three finalists for the position. The other two were Edward Galligan, current Executive Director of the Port of Olympia, and Arthur Scheunemann, former President and CEO of the Economic Development Council of Seattle and King County. “We had three highly qualified candidates, and that made this a hard decision,” said commission President Brian Wolfe. “This was a rigorous process,” said commission Vice President Eric LaBrant. “Julianna was stacked up against the best of the industry and she’s the most qualified candidate.

Todd Coleman, CEO of Port of Vancouver USA, step down from his position May 19, after 15 years with the port.   Coleman, a Professional Engineer, began his career with the port in 2001, when he was hired as Facilities Manager. After three promotions, he earned the position of Deputy Executive Director in 2005. The port’s Board of Commissioners appointed him CEO in 2012.   Coleman plans to spend some time with his family this summer before seeking a new opportunity.   The Board of Commissioners will appoint an interim CEO while the port moves through the hiring process.

The Port of Vancouver USA welcomed the Kypros Unity, commanded by Capt. Wilfredo F. Itable of Cyprus, on her maiden voyage Oct. 28. Capt. Itable and his 20-member Filipino crew were welcomed to Vancouver by Keith Anderson and Curtis Williams of United Grain Corp., Beth Sanchez of Transmarine Navigation, and Ken Mishler of the Port of Vancouver. The Kypros Unity is a Panama bulk carrier built in Japan and launched on Sept. 26, 2014. She is owned by Gloverthree Shipping Corp., chartered by Mitsui & Co. Ltd. and operated by Safety Management Overseas S.A.

The Port of Vancouver USA welcomed the M/V Jobst Oldendorff, commanded by Capt. Baisie of Ghana, on her maiden voyage October 16. Capt. Baisie and his 21-member multinational crew were welcomed to Vancouver by Oldendorff Port Captain Russell D’Souza , Chris Cummins and Sandra Avila of Pacific North West Ship & Cargo Services, Noa Lidstone and Ken McLaughlin of Kinder Morgan Bulk Terminals, David Nagel and Shawn Robinson of SGS North America Inc., and Mike Schiller and Steve Mickelson of the Port of Vancouver.

The Port of Vancouver USA welcomed the Nord Geranium, commanded by Capt. Kim Aarup of Denmark, on her first voyage to the United States July 29. Capt. Aarup and his 22-member Danish and Filipino crew were welcomed to Vancouver by Aaron Flett, terminal manager with NuStar Energy Corporation, Gary Martinke, vessel agent with Inchcape Shipping Services and Mike Schiller, business development manager for the Port of Vancouver. The July 29 visit in Vancouver was the Nord Geranium’s maiden voyage, after being launched on June 25, 2014.

Port of Vancouver inform of the welcome given to the 'M/V Alam Sinar' commanded by Capt. Arturo A. Lobigas of the Philippines on the bulk carrier's recent maiden voyage arrival in the United States. Lobigas and his 19-member Filipino crew were welcomed to Vancouver by representatives from Pacific Northwest Ship and Cargo, and Port of Vancouver USA. The Port says that the Class NKK bulk carrier M/V Alam Sinar was built in Japan in 2014. and is owned by Grace Ocean Private Limited and operated by Malaysian Bulk Carrier.

On July 29 the Port of Vancouver USA began phase two construction of one of the most innovative projects in its 100-year-history, the construction of a piling-supported, watertight trench that will support a new grade separated rail entrance into the port. Considered the crown jewel of the West Vancouver Freight Access (WVFA) project, the new entrance will eliminate a chokepoint on the regional rail system and reduce congestion by as much as 40%. The $38 million project, which is being built in four phases, is expected to be complete in 2015.

The Port of Vancouver USA welcomes the 'Metis Leader' commanded by Capt. Nicanor V. Alcala of the Phillippines on her maiden voyage to the United States, informs Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS). The vessel was built in July of this year and was launched July 23, 2013. The Metis Leader is owned by Cyprus Maritime S.A. of Panama and is one of approximately 100 vessels the NYK Line currently has in service. The vessel is 656 feet in length and has a deadweight capacity of 18,200 metric tons.

The Port of Vancouver USA has announced that Port of Vancouver Commissioner Jerry Oliver will serve as president of the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) Board of Trustees for 2013. Twenty seven ports were recognized today for exemplary projects and initiatives at the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) annual Awards Luncheon, held in conjunction with AAPA’s 2003 annual convention in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. Winners were announced in the association’s national Communications, Information Technology, Environmental Improvement and Facilities Engineering Competitions. Engraved plaques were bestowed at the ceremony upon the Port of Tacoma and the Port of Portland, winners in of this year’s Information Technology Awards; The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Port of Portland, the Virginia Port Authority and the Port of Tacoma, winners of the Environmental Improvement Awards; the Port of Vancouver, U.S.A.

The Port of Vancouver USA is one of the first ports in the nation to replace regular diesel fuel with environmentally-friendly biodiesel for use in its own vehicles and heavy equipment. Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning diesel fuel made from vegetable oil, including recycled cooking oil. While pure biodiesel contains no petroleum, it can be blended with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. The Port of Vancouver will use a combination 20 percent biodiesel blended with 80 percent regular diesel, called "B20." Use of B20 biodiesel can result in a reduction of emissions by up to 20 percent, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
