USCG Orders Disabled Vessel To Obtain Tug Assistance
The M/V BBC PERU suffered an engine casualty which occured 12 nautical miles seaward of the "J" buoy at the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Captain of the Port, Puget Sound issued an order requiring the vessel to obtain an assist tug to stand-by while affecting repairs. The tug Barbara Foss was the nearest tug and was obtained to render required assistance. The vessel's crew was not able to restore full engine capability and the vessel is proceeding to Port Angeles at reduced speed, where it will anchor to affect repairs. The tug Barbara Foss will escort the vessel until it is anchored.
USCG Detains Cargo Ship As a Result of Deficiencies
On Sept. 27, 2001, following a report from the Puget Sound Pilots that the cargo ship MARLIN had serious navigation and steering problems, the Captain of the Port Puget Sound ordered the vessel to return to the Port of Everett under tug escort and to remain moored until Coast Guard marine inspectors could complete a full inspection. The Coast Guard inspection identified not only navigation and steering problems, but it also identified watertight integrity, lifesaving equipment, and firefighting equipment deficiencies. Subsequently, on September 28, 2001, the MARLIN was ordered to remain moored in Everett until such time that the vessel was brought into full compliance with all the required laws and regulations for its intended service.
Coast Guard Issues Potential Terrorist Threat
The U.S. Coast Guard continues to work with local, state, and federal agencies to assess and improve port security throughout the region. Based on information received across the U.S. Government, there is a credible threat to maritime interests from swimmers and divers. The Captain of the Port Puget Sound has notified individual maritime industry and port authority stakeholders to heighten awareness and discuss appropriate security measures. This information does not change the Homeland Security Advisory System threat level. The threat level remains “yellow” (elevated).
