Storm-shut Ports Reopen in US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico
The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port San Juan has set Port Condition FOUR in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands reopening the area's maritime ports, following the passing of Tropical Storm Grace near the islands.Now a tropical depression, Grace continues its path just off the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. The ports of San Juan, Puerto Rico and the ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands were reopened Sunday afternoon, while all other remaining ports in Puerto Rico reopened at 5:45 a.m. Monday.
Fire Breaks Out on US Navy Ship in San Diego
U.S. Navy ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) caught fire on Sunday morning while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego.According to the U.S. Navy, 21 people were being treated for light injuries on Sunday.The Navy said in a statement: "Today, we suffered a terrible tragedy aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) when a fire broke out aboard the ship while in port San Diego. At this point, 17 Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital."The remainder of the crew is accounted for.

Coast Guard establishes Safety Zone for WW II explosive detonation
Coast Guard establishes a Safety Zone Regulation from 9a.m. to 12p.m. April 13, 2014 in Flamenco Bay, during the underwater detonation of a World War II explosive in Culebra, Puerto Rico. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. Coast Guard has established a Safety Zone Regulation surrounding the waters of Flamenco Bay in Culebra, Puerto Rico from 9a.m. to 12p.m. Sunday in anticipation of the underwater detonation of a War World II explosive. Persons and vessels are prohibited from transiting through, anchoring in, or remaining within the Safety Zone unless authorized by the Captain of the Port San Juan. The Safety Zone is necessary to ensure the safety of vessels, and the public on the navigable waters. A U.S. Navy specialized team will carryout preparations for the detonation.
Maersk Exits Chile, Peru, NW Europe Container Service
In a release, the company said the last Andean vessel from Latin America to North Europe would be the Marianne Schulte, which is set to leave Chilean port San Antonio on May 20 and Peruvian port Callao on May 23. The last direct service Andean-bound vessel from North Europe will be the Thekla Schulte, set to leave the Dutch port of Rotterdam on May 23, Tilbury in the U.K. on May 24, the German port of Hamburg on May 26 and Antwerp, Belgium on May 28. Maersk said Peru and Chile would continue to be served with vessels via Balboa, Panama, while a direct service from the Colombian port of Santa Marta will continue with an improved transit time of 12 days through the existing network.
