Hydrogen One: Innovative Towboat Set to Shake Things Up in the US

MAN Unveils Its New Flagship Engine

MAN has revealed the successor to its 48/60CR engine in the company’s 4x line of high-performance diesel engines. The MAN 45/60CR marine diesel engine will initially be available as 12V and 14V versions that boast power outputs, of 15,600 and 18,200 kW respectively, with inline versions following at a later stage. GE Gas Turbines Power Japanese Destroyer

GE's Marine Solutions reports that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned its second Izumo-class helicopter-carrying destroyer. The new JS Kaga (DDH 184) is powered by four GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, and was commissioned at the Japan Marine United Corporation shipyard in Yokohama on March 22, 2017. First-in-class JS Izumo (DDH 183) and JS Kaga are the largest surface combatants in the JMSDF fleet. Both feature a powerful and reliable combined diesel and LM2500 gas turbine propulsion system, with the gas turbines using GE’s integrated electronic controls.

Kirby to Order New Articulated Tank Barge, Tugboat, Pair

Kirby Corporation says it is to construct an articulated 185,000 barrel tank barge and 10,000 horsepower tugboat unit (ATB unit) at a cost of $75 to $80 million for charter to a customer when completed. Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Since March 2013, the specialist for large engines, propulsion systems and distributed energy systems has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce plc and Daimler AG, each of which has a 50% shareholding in the company via a joint venture. The group of companies with MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH as the core company has been consolidated in the Rolls-Royce Group’s results since the beginning of 2013.

Bergen Engines Becomes New Tognum Subsidiary

As of today, July 1, Norwegian engine manufacturer Bergen Engines AS becomes part of the Tognum Group. Following the acquisition of Tognum AG by the joint venture of Rolls-Royce plc. and Daimler AG, the former Rolls-Royce subsidiary Bergen Engines was merged into the Tognum Group. With that Tognum, the propulsion and power solution specialist, adds medium-speed diesel and gas engines with power outputs up to 10 MW to its engine portfolio. Tognum supplies high-speed diesel and gas engines carrying the MTU brand with power ranges of 75 to 10,000kW and 100-2,150kW respectively.

MHI Acquires Pratt & Whitney Power Systems

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) completed its acquisition of Pratt & Whitney Power Systems, the small and medium-size gas turbine business unit of Pratt & Whitney (P&W), an aeroengine manufacturer. Pratt & Whitney Power Systems has changed its corporate name to PW Power Systems, Inc. (PWPS) and is now an MHI group company. The acquisition was completed in accordance with the agreement reached last December between MHI and United Technologies Corporation (UTC) of the U.S., P&W's parent company. As part of the acquisition, MHI also acquired Turboden s.r.l.

Kirby Complete Penn Maritime Takeover

Kirby Corporation completes the acquisition of Penn Maritime Inc. & Maritime Investments LLC, US operators of tank barges and tugboats. Penn's fleet, comprised of 18 double-hulled tank barges with a capacity of 1.9 million barrels and 16 tugboats, operates along the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States. Penn's tank barge fleet has an average age of approximately 13 years with a product mix that consists primarily of refinery feedstocks, asphalt and crude oil. Caterpillar Introduces New High-speed GenSet

The 20-cylinder C175 produces the greatest power output of any single high-speed diesel generator set available on the market, producing up to 4 MW of power, requiring less maintenance and provides the highest power density of any current high-speed generator set. “The C175-20 represents a true breakthrough in generator set technology,” said Robert Koval, Investors Projects general manager of Caterpillar Electric Power Division. “Others have made promises about similar offerings, but the C175 is the largest high-speed generator on the market, period. GE’s Bolsinger Participates on Expert Panel

GE Marine’s General Manager, Brien Bolsinger, participated in a panel during the United States Navy League’s Sea Air Space industry exposition held recently in National Harbor, Maryland. Bolsinger discussed how GE’s LM aeroderivative gas turbines can help the United States Navy keep ship power costs effective, while employing modern technologies. During the panel session, Obsolescence: From Design to Modernization* held on April 17, Bolsinger indicated he believes the U.S. Select equipment with total ownership cost (TOC) weighted more heavily than acquisition price.

Kirby Expects Strong 3Q Earnings

Expected result compares with $.57 per share for the 2010 third quarter, fueled by continued strong inland marine transportation and land-based diesel engine services markets. Kirby to announce 2011 third quarter results on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, with conference call on Thursday, October 27, 2011. Kirby Corporation announced today that it expects its 2011 third quarter net earnings to exceed $.90 per share, above the top end of Kirby's earnings guidance of $.82 to $.87 per share, and substantially above 2010 third quarter earnings of $.57 per share. Wärtsilä, Versa Power to Develop Fuel Cell Technology

Wärtsilä, the leading provider of power solutions to both the marine and energy markets, and Versa Power Systems (VPS), a leading developer of environmentally friendly, high-power solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), today announced a co-operative agreement to develop and integrate Versa Power's SOFC technology into Wärtsilä products. A key target of the agreement is to develop commercial Wärtsilä fuel cell products that generate power and heat for various applications in the distributed energy and marine markets. The agreement allows Wärtsilä to integrate VPS fuel cell stack modules, especially for larger power range products. For VPS, the agreement provides a dedicated partner with the ability to commercialize fuel cell products in large markets around the globe.

German Caterpillar Facility Receives Sustainability Award

The work done at Catepillar’s Kiel Engine Center in Kiel, Germany, during the manufacturing process for MaK and Cat engines up to 16,000 kW is now being recognized through an environmental protection award. In June, Caterpillar Motoren, the manufacturing arm focused on the production of MaK and Cat engines for marine, petroleum and power generation applications, was awarded an Environmental Award from the Economic Association of Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state in Germany.

Caterpillar Hosts Maine Maritime Academy Cadets

While most college students completed their spring semester and departed campus for summer jobs, internships or volunteer opportunities, nearly 250 cadets from the Maine Maritime Academy are utilizing the summer months to gain valuable experience out on the open seas. Launching from Castine, Maine, United States, these young men and women boarded the Training Vessel State of Maine and charted their course east for a cruise through western Europe, including stops in Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. However, one of the most unique experiences of the trip was a cruise through the Kiel Canal in Germany, which links the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.
