SOLAS Training in S. America

International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s most important ship safety treaty – SOLAS – provides for safe merchant shipping, covering a wide variety of topics, from ship construction to fire protection, to life-saving appliances and cargo carriage.SOLAS generally applies only to ships above a certain size which make international voyages, but IMO’s efforts to improve ship safety go further – extending to so-called “non-SOLAS” vessels. Workshop on Safe Handling Dangerous Goods

A  variety of important measures must be applied to transport dangerous goods in packaged form and solid bulk by ship safely, says  International Maritime Organization (IMO).According to the UN body, these include correct identification, classification, packaging, labelling, handling, storage, loading, stowage, unloading and transport.These measures are covered by IMO’s International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG) and the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargo Code (IMSBC) – the subject of an IMO training workshop underway in San José, Costa Rica (7-11 October).The training is enabling participants from a number of Central and South America countries - Costa Rica…

Workshop on Implementing IMO Treaties

International Maritime Organization (IMO) treaties need to be implemented into national law so that they can be applied on ships flying the flag of a particular country and so that those countries can implement effective port State control and comply with other obligations under the specified IMO instruments.According to the UN body, an IMO course provides lawyers and legislative drafters with the tools they need to understand IMO treaties, how they are developed and adopted - and the implementation of those treaties into national legislation.Twenty-one participants from Latin America attended a regional workshop on the general principles of drafting maritime legislation to implement IMO Conventions…

New Catamaran “Unicat” in Argentina

In September 2018,  a 17 x 5 meter catamaran completed its final tests in the Tigre Delta of theTigre on the Parana River near Buenos Aires, Argentina prior to its delivery to her Chilean owners.The cat was designed by Eng. Spotlight on Liability in Latin-America

International Maritime Organization (IMO) is supporting a Regional Workshop for Latin-American countries in Argentina to implement and ratify treaties dealing with liability and compensation. The workshop, took place in Buenos Aires (14-18 May), has provided a comprehensive overview of the IMO liability regime, including treaties covering wreck removal, salvage, carriage of hazardous and noxious substances, passengers, CLC, Fund, Bunkers Convention and limitation of liability. The history of the treaties’ development, their principles and practical implications are all being covered, with a view to supporting officials to implement relevant obligations in national legislation.

Inspection Training for Cleaner Shipping

Inspection training for Port State Control Officers in South and Central America is underway at an International Maritime Organization (IMO) workshop in Buenos Aires, Argentina (6-8 November). There are participants from: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Uruguay. Port State Control is the process, supported by IMO, by which officials in ports can board visiting foreign-flagged vessels to verify compliance with international safety and pollution standards. The Buenos Aires workshop is specifically focused on training officers to inspect and enforce both air pollution and energy-efficiency provisions in IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI treaty.

Teaching Energy-Efficient Ship Operation in Argentina

Maritime training institutions in Argentina are the latest to benefit from  International Maritime Organization (IMO) work to help introduce the topic of energy-efficient ship operation into teaching curriculums. A workshop, taking place in Buenos Aires (2-3 November) under the Organization’s GloMEEP project is supporting maritime training institutes to deliver the IMO Model Course 4.05 to seafarers. The course consists of a series of lectures, interactive exercises and videos to enhance the learning experience and ensure there are properly trained crews who can contribute to efficient shipping. Port Co-operation, Maritime Security Meet of Argentina

A regional workshop focusing on this year’s World Maritime Day theme - Connecting Ships, Ports and People – has been held in Buenos Aires, Argentina (26-29 June). The event, organized by International Maritime Organization (IMO) in collaboration with the Argentine Maritime Authority (Prefectura Naval Argentina), aimed to promote cooperation between ports and designated authorities of participating countries through an open discussion and by sharing experiences and best practices related to maritime security. Argentinian Brutus at Work

In May of 2016 the Argentinian-designed and built 28.77 by 10.2-meter ASD tug Brutus went to work in the harbor at Buenos Aries. This marked a milestone in Argentinian maritime affairs, as it is, at 5,400 HP, the most powerful ship-handling tug in the country. The tug was designed by Ing. Emilio Noël and built by Unidelta Shipyards S.A., which has a well-established reputation in a wide range of steel and aluminum workboats. The yard has a plant located in Buenos Aires with 10,000 cubic meters of open and 4,000 cu.m. of covered work space.

Argentina Sinks Chinese Ship

Argentina's coast guard has sunk a Chinese trawler that was fishing illegally within its territorial waters, the coast guard said on Tuesday, marking a first test for relations between recently elected President Mauricio Macri and Beijing. The Chinese vessel was found in a restricted area and attempted a collision maneuver, according to authorities. The coast guard, or Prefectura Naval Argentina, is headed by army generals and is part of the Argentinian Defence Ministry. The sinking comes as China expands its long-distance fishing fleet to meet surging demand for seafood, with Beijing's foreign ministry expressing "serious concern" over the incident.

Damen Shipyards Group Adapts Swiftly to New Argentinian Import Regulations

Damen Shipyards, which has already built up a considerable presence in Argentina since the nineties, is working very closely with Argentinian shipyards and looking forward to expanding its activities in the country. Currently, several Damen ASD tugs are being built in Argentina and very soon work will begin on an entirely new powerful pusher to serve the Hidrovía Paraná-Paraguay, the greatest waterway of South America. Between 1994 and 1999, Damen delivered more than 40 of its well-known AluCats to the Prefectura Naval Argentina, as well as several Stan Tenders.

ABS Granted Statutory Authority By Argentina

ABS has signed a memorandum of Agreement with the Prefectura Naval Argentina (PNA – the Argentine Coast Guard) by which the classification society is now authorized to issue statutory certificates on behalf of the PNA for Argentine flag vessels in the nation’s cabotage trades. ABS is one of only two international class societies to receive this authorization. ABS is currently authorized by the PNA to issue statutory certificates for internationally trading Argentine flag vessels. The extended authorization expands that authorization to include domestically operating vessels such as workboats, fishing vessels and barges. “This agreement has particular significance since a recent change in Argentine law requires all cabotage vessels to operate under the national flag by 2006…
