Marine Piping: It's Not Rocket Science

Anything but unconventional, Viega piping products and systems provide uncommon time savings and safer repairs, leading to a better bottom line. The maritime industry, over time, has been unusually resistant to change in many aspects of how it operates. Arguably, the ‘biggest’ advances on the water spanning a five decade period leading up to the beginning of the new millennium could be measured in terms of deadweight tonnage and/or the length of a particular class of hulls. Nowhere is that reality more evident than in the shipyard, and looking at what equipment and hardware is used to build and repair marine vessels – now and in the past. Marine piping systems are a perfect example.

LR Approves GTT Pressurized Membrane Systems

Lloyd’s Register specialists have issued GTT an Approval in Principle (AIP) for a membrane cargo containment system (CCS) for bunker ships to allow an increase in vapor pressure of up to 2barg. The AIP follows a joint research and innovation program between GTT and LR investigating cargo containment behavior, looking at strength aspects in various applications, sizes and at different pressures. The close collaboration between Lloyd’s Register and GTT experts, through workshops using experimental and analytical results and data on internal pressures occurring in LNG tanks, studied the maximum compressive strength of the containment system on LNG carriers.

LR Awards AIP for GTT Bunkering Concept

GTT, a designer of membrane containment systems for the maritime transportation and storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), announced that it has received an Approval in Principle (AIP) from classification society Lloyd's Register for its 4,000 m3 bunkering ship concept, using Mark III Flex Cargo Containment system and operating with a vapor pressure of up to 2 barg. Increasing the upper limit on the pressure up to 2 barg gives more operational flexibility. It allows a more flexible Boil Off Gas (BOG) management during loading and bunkering operations. Thanks to the pressurized membrane tank, the duration of bunkering operations are also optimized by increasing loading flow rates. Lastly, during voyage and stand-by mode, the time before gas pressure reaches the upper limit is longer.

Coxreels Introduces Three-way Brake for 1600 Series

Image: Coxreels

Hose, cord and cable reel manufacturer Coxreels announced the addition of an optional accessory to improve efficiency and safety of its 1600 Series reel, adding a three-way brake feature to the array of available components, configurations and accessories. Drag brakes are a standard feature on hose reels to prevent free-spooling when momentum continues to spin the reel after the desired length of hose is extracted, Coxreels explained. The three-way brake is a lever-actuated brake…

HydraWrap: Not Just a Temporary Repair Anymore

Many vessel operators that experience leaks to piping, pipe fittings, and bulkheads have, in recent years, turned to the HydraWrap system. Used to repair leaking pipe systems and prevent downtime, the HydraWrap system, manufactured by HydraTech Engineered Products, LLC in Cincinnati, OH, utilizes high strength carbon fiber fabric and high strength epoxy resins to restore the structural and/or pressure boundary capacity of shipboard piping, bulkheads and equipment. In a nutshell, HydraWrap is a low cost alternative to traditional weld repairs.

RSC Bio Solutions Busts Myths Surrounding Readily Biodegradable Fluids

There’s a lot of conflicting information related to readily biodegradable lubricants and fluids. What’s the real story? The U.S. EPA’s 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements are now in place requiring the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) in oil to water interfaces for vessels over 79 feet. The VGP revision also requires any above water line hull cleaning or deck washdowns resulting in discharge to be conducted with appropriate cleaners and detergents.

Pipe Joining: Testing Times for Seaworthy Products

Internal testing is carried out before the regulatory process begins.

For shipbuilders, Type Approval by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) is a key criterion in the selection and installation of products and systems for a wide range of shipboard applications. For manufacturers, meeting IACS standards is a major factor in the design, development and qualification of products to ensure the highest levels of safety, fitness for purpose and reliability Len Swantek, Director of Global Regulatory Compliance at Victaulic…

Offshore: New Products at OTC

Sensotec's Model 424 & 425 Hammer Union pressure transmitter are rugged sensors designed specifically for use with 1502 and 2202, two-in. wing unions in the demanding environment of drilling installations. Typical high-pressure applications include mud logging, cementing, fracturing, acidizing, nitrogen pumping, and other upstream well servicing applications. The Model 425 is available in ranges from 0-5,000 to 15,000 psi. The Model 424 is available in ranges from 0-15,000 to 20,000 psi. Both the 425 and 424 deliver accuracy of 0.2% (BFSL). Standard output is 4-20 mA (2-wire) with a supply voltage of 9-28 VDC. Each unit is RFI / EMI protected. Operating temperature is from -45 to 200 degrees F. The "ESX" Power sections provide high torque at very low speed for mud motors.
