Austal USA christened its 14th Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF), USNS Cody, during a ceremony at its manufacturing facility. Cody is the first EPF Flight II as well as the first Navy vessel to honor the city of Cody, Wyo. Glosten Tapped to Design Scripps' New Hydrogen-hybrid Research Vessel
UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography today announced that naval architecture and marine engineering company Glosten has been selected as the naval architect for the university’s new California coastal research vessel. SCPA Logs 10% 1Q Growth
South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) saw strong container volume growth during the first quarter of the 2016 fiscal year, with TEU volumes 9.5 percent higher than the same period last year. SCPA handled 167,549 TEUs last month, an 11.1 percent increase from September 2014 volumes. Since the 2016 fiscal year began in July, SCPA has moved 513,299 TEUs. As measured in pier containers, 289,610 boxes have moved across SCPA docks fiscal year to date. Pier container volume is up 8.6 percent from the 266,741 boxes handled during the same period last fiscal year. "Our growth is indicative of broad-based strength across all market segments," said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome.
Coast Guard Receives New Response Boat
Members of Coast Guard Station Tybee Island held a ceremony at the station Tuesday to recognize the arrival of their newest response boat. Along with the Station Tybee Island crew, members from Coast Guard Sector Charleston, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the mayor of Savannah, Ga., the pro tempore mayor of Tybee and representatives from local agencies attended the ceremony. Following the official proceedings, guests were invited to go aboard the Response Boat-Medium and view the new vessel.
ABS Harsh Environment Technology Center
ABS announced at the Second Annual Arctic Shipping North America Conference in St. John’s Newfoundland, Canada, the creation of the ABS Harsh Environment Technology Center located on the campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). The Center will support the development of technologies for ships and offshore structures operating in harsh environments, particularly the Arctic. Applied research will be conducted to study vessels and units operating in ice covered waters, low temperature environments and severe wave and wind climates. It is envisioned that the R&D facility will become an established fixture on the campus. Large exploration and production field developments in harsh waters have called for ice class guidance for offshore structures.
TOTE Vessel to Assist Troops
Upon the request of the Commander of the Military Sealift Command, Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE), will lend the assistance of the S. S. Northern Lights to transport military hardware to Southwest Asia. The ship departed Tacoma, Washington Sunday, February 9, and will arrive in San Diego to be loaded with military cargo mid week. An Alaska corporation founded in 1975, TOTE maintains three Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) cargo trailer ships for the Puget Sound-Anchorage trade. Typically the S. S. Northern Lights and her sister ships, the S. S. Westward Venture and S. S. Great Land, are engaged in transporting vehicles, trailers, construction equipment, and other merchandise from the Port of Tacoma, Washington to the Port of Anchorage, Alaska.
