Electrification in a New Era for the O&G Industry

(File photo courtesy of BP)

With the recovery in oil prices, deepwater and ultradeep water oil and gas (O&G) projects are the focus of renewed interest. Project viability will come down to a continued focus on cost, but also productivity through high-performing assets. And electrification is set to drive a dramatic impact of these high-tech production facilities for more efficient operations.Following a prolonged downturn in prices, a flicker of life has returned to offshore production projects with oil recovering to around $70/barrel.

BMT Fluid Mechanics to Validate FLNG Design

Marlin free surface velocity field

The emergence of the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) concept has seen an unprecedented focus on development activity and has reinforced the commercial interest in these facilities. However, as the industry strives to make the concept a reality, in addition to the already formidable risks present in conventional projects, a plethora of distinctive risks associated with FLNG have now been added to the mix, with little industry experience to learn from. Simply adapting risk and safety concepts of land-based LNG developments is not the solution…

Wärtsilä, Cryonorm to Develop LNGPac Fuel System

An agreement has been reached between Wärtsilä and Cryonorm Systems BV, the Netherlands based developer and supplier of cryogenic vaporizers, to form a consortium to deliver LNG systems for the Inland Waterway (IWW) European market. The main aim of this cooperation is to create a standard LNG fuel system for inland waterway vessels that will achieve lower costs, while also reducing the lead time for the system so as to conform with the short building time of these vessels. As part of the study, numerous types of vessels that operate on European rivers have been analyzed and, as a result, five vessel types have been identified as potential targets for an LNG fuel system. From this study, standards have been established for both newbuild and retrofit installations.
