Innovation is driving advanced monitoring and control technologies for environmental and safety compliance in the marine sector, says Gérard Baldellou, marine business unit manager at CMR Group.The marine diesel power sector continues to face significant challenges, particularly in areas where emissions resulting from combustion inside engines, along with fuel consumption levels need reducing. Escalating operating costs, tighter margins and pressures in the oil and gas sector signal challenging times for ship owners and fleet operators.

An Alfa Laval Smit Combustion system (FU type) is now installed at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark. The system, which adds inert gas production to the center’s already comprehensive range of full-scale vessel applications, will ensure that Alfa Laval remains at the forefront of developing and optimizing inert gas systems.Inaugurated in 2014, the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center is essentially a full-sized machine room on land, with equipment from all of Alfa Laval’s marine product groups installed in process lines as they would be on a commercial vessel.

Order intake for the Alfa Laval  Marine Division decreased in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter, mainly as a result of PureSOx coming in lower, following an extraordinary development in the preceding quarter.According to a stock exchange announcement, both offshore pumping systems and ballast water equipment reported significant growth compared to the third quarter, but not enough to compensate for the swing in PureSOx.Regarding the environmental portfolio of products, the market’s interest in PureSOx was on a continued good level as there was no change to the market’s view that the scrubber technology is a long-term financially attractive solution.Actual order intake was however lower after the extraordinary third quarter…

Swedish company Alfa Laval  has won an order to supply Framo pumping systems to an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) vessel to be built in China.The provider of specialized products and engineering solutions based on its key technologies of heat transfer, separation and fluid handling said in a press release that the order has a value of approximately SEK 70 million ($7.72 mln).It was booked late September in the Pumping Systems unit of the Marine Division, with deliveries scheduled for 2019.The order comprises marine pumping systems for crude oil offloading, slop, produced water, off-spec oil and ballast pump duties."I am pleased to announce this order for our Framo pumping systems.

CMR Group said it has won funding support from Innovate UK for a new electrical wiring harness being developed for industrial diesel and gas engines used in harsh environments. Just down river from Damen Song Cam Shipyard, SAL Heavy Lift’s MV Svenja departed from Halong Bay loaded with 14 vessels. The shipment consists primarily of built-for-stock vessels – Stan Pontoons and Tugs – which will be available for immediate purchase on arrival in Rotterdam in October. MV Svenja’s voyage began in Shanghai on August 30th when she started loading eight Stan Pontoons that were built at Damen Yichang Shipyard, China. This first load includes Stan Pontoons 4113, 4111, 4512, 5211 and 6316.

The Alfa Laval Test & Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark will soon be expanded to five times its current size. This development, focused on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other alternative fuels, aims to address new challenges and possibilities for marine customers as they strive to meet environmental and energy targets. Alfa Laval  said the expansion will create the world’s most advanced test center for environmental and combustion technology – regardless of fuel type. Huisman announced that André Meijer is appointed as CEO, effective August 1, 2015. This appointment follows the decision of Joop Roodenburg to step down as the company’s CEO this year to the CTO position. From his new position as CTO, Roodenburg will remain a member of the board and will now be able to fully focus on technical innovation for the company’s various product groups, Huisman said. Yara International ASA delivered strong third-quarter results, with record fertilizer deliveries and continued margin benefit from lower European gas price. "Yara reports a strong third-quarter result with record deliveries, reflecting both organic growth and the Bunge acquisition in Brazil," said Torgeir Kvidal, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Yara. "Our European production plants performed well, with both higher production and improved margins as natural gas cost has declined," said Torgeir Kvidal. Yara reports third-quarter net income after non-controlling interests of NOK 1,707 million (NOK 6.18 per share), compared with NOK 1,571 million (NOK 5.66 per share) a year earlier.

Yara International ASA delivered strong second-quarter results, with improved European commodity margins due to lower gas price. The results were impacted by lower nitrate deliveries, but NPK deliveries and value-added premiums remained strong. "Yara reports a strong second-quarter result as margin improvements more than offset the volume impact of an earlier end to the season in Europe," said Jørgen Ole Haslestad, President and Chief Executive Officer in Yara. IHC Merwede successfully increased its orderbook in 2013 across the main sectors of its business: offshore and dredging. The company received almost € 1.8 billion worth of new orders in the past year. At the end of 2013, the order book was valued at over € 1.7 billion, which is the equivalent of a backlog of approximately two years. IHC Merwede develops and builds innovative vessels, advanced equipment and life-cycle support services for the dredging, mining and offshore industries.

An 11-vessel order for DMS Maritime Pty Limited culminated recently with a Rescue Gear Ship 9316, which will be used to support the Royal Australian Navy’s submarine fleet. Damen Shipyards and DMS Maritime signed the contract for the RGS 9316 on November 16 in Sydney, Australia. The vessel will be built at a Damen yard in Vietnam and is due to be delivered in 2016. Having built a similar vessel, the SD Victoria for Serco UK supporting the Royal Navy, the RGS 9316 is based on a proven Damen concept.

The Hanseatic trading city of Bergen, on the edge of the Norwegian North Sea, has a long maritime tradition. From shipping to aquaculture to offshore oil and gas, this is a city whose economic identity is defined by its ties to the sea. A large and modern central warehouse is planned near the company's current service unit in the . Wärtsilä will invest approximately EUR 70 million in the new distribution centre. The investments will be spread over three years from 2008 to 2010. The intention is to outsource logistics and warehousing operations. Wärtsilä has seven product companies: in , , the , , , and .
