Samsung Heavy and MISC Develop Floating CO2 Storage Unit

Samsung Heavy Industries has received basic certification for a floating CO2 storage unit (FCSU) from DNV.The FCSU, jointly developed by Samsung Heavy Industries and MISC, is 330 meters long and 64 meters wide, and has a high-pressure tank capacity that can store 100,000 cubic meters of liquefied CO2 at -50 degrees Celsius or less.The injection module mounted on the upper part of the hull secures the ability to send five million tons (MTPA) of CO2 per year to the depths of the seabed.

Finnish Shipyard wins Ship Deal from Royal Caribbean

Miami-based cruise line operator Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Meyer Turku shipyard signed a memorandum of agreement for two next generation cruise ship orders to be delivered in 2022 and 2024. The around 200,000 gross ton large cruise ships under the project name “Icon” will mark the beginning of a new generation of LNG powered cruise ships with a number of innovations such as an application of fuel cells for power generation. Fuel cells are a very energy efficient and clean way to generate electrical energy. “With Icon class, we begin the journey to take the smoke out of our smokestacks", said Richard Fain, chairman and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd.

PPG Unveils Subsea Coating System

The PPG protective and marine coatings business is introducing and highlight the new PHENGUARD Subsea coating system. The new product combination of PHENGUARD Subsea 610 coating and PHENGUARD Subsea 780 coating is an ideal two-coat subsea system with high-temperature resistance up to 180 C (356 F) for surfaces with or without insulation. “The subsea market is one of the most innovative sectors within the offshore industry, with state-of-the art technologies used for subsea projects worldwide," said Marcel de Haan, PPG global product specialist for subsea coatings. At elevated temperatures, he said, there is a possibility of having a temperature gradient over the coating, which can make coating systems behave differently than in standard conditions.

PPG Unveils Phenguard Pro Tank Coating

PPG Protective and Marine Coatings has unveiled Phenguard Pro, a tank coating system that is intended to offer benefits for both shipyards and ship-owners. For shipyards and at installation, the coating system provides potential efficiency gains of over 20 percent compared to three-layer coating systems, PPG said. For owners it provides the wide chemical resistance and long carriage time of more than 3,400 cargoes, delivering maximum flexibility to the product tanker trades, according to the manufacturer.

Ocean Business 2013 at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton will welcome 300+ worldwide companies to its upcomeng show. Kongsberg, Vestfold University Simulator R&D

Kongsberg Maritime's simulation division and Vestfold University College has signed a framework agreement to further explore activities and projects of joint interest within research and development of maritime simulators from an innovation and human factor perspective. The agreement which was signed 22nd December 2010 comprises extensive R&D project plans and the use of an Interactive Simulator Laboratory (SIMSAM lab) at Vestfold University College, which will serve as a R&D facility. The agreement will include several R&D projects involving maritime simulators in different aspects.

Kongsberg Forms Research Group to Optimize Simulator

Kongsberg Maritime AS, Simulation & Training has made an agreement with the Research Council of Norway to form a user-directed research program called SIMAR - Simulation of Demanding Maritime Operations - which is aimed at improving simulation training by enhancing focus on human factors. Aker Kvaerner Posts Record High Results

Aker Kvaerner reported record high operating results in the period. The EBITDA for the second quarter of $119m, is an increase of 66 percent compared to the second quarter of 2005. New contract awards in the Subsea, Product & Technology segment and growth in existing contracts, resulted in a $2.5b order intake and an order backlog of $9b at the end of June 2006. Revenues in the second quarter totaled $2.3b, an increase of 44 percent compared with the same quarter last year, reflecting strong markets and high activity in all reporting segments. EBITDA for the three-month period was $119m represents an increase of 66 percent from $71m in the second quarter 2005. The quarterly EBITDA margin was 5.2 percent compared to 4.5 percent in the second quarter last year.

Aker Maritime has established a new product technology and deepwater R&D group to be headed by Dr. John Halkyard, who is the former technical director of Deep Oil Technology, Inc. The new group will support Aker in its quest "to be the source for deepwater solutions." Dr. Halkyard says that the group is focusing on products that will "make quantum improvement in deepwater field economics…that will change the way things are done." Imminent projects include concepts that were initiated by Deep Oil Technology: a unique FPSO with dry trees and drilling capacity called an "Oil Box," which can produce and store 2MM BBl or more of oil.
