Callan Marine's new Jones Act cutterhead suction dredge (CSD) General MacArthur and its accompanying idler barge have entered service in Texas, heading to work on several projects before transiting to Corpus Christi for the second phase of the deepening and widening project.The newest and largest dredger in Callen Marine's fleet, the General MacArthur represents the next generation of dredging technology and crew comfort, said Maxie McGuire, President of Callan Marine.“The General MacArthur is a complete game-changer for the dredging industry,” McGuire said.

Callan Marine Wins Corpus Christi Dredging Work

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) awarded a $97.9 million dredging contract on Wednesday to Callan Marine, Ltd., to complete the second phase of the four phase Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project. TEN Orders LNG Carrier at HHI

Greece-based crude, product and LNG tanker operator Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) ordered has one-option-one 174,000cbm LNG carrier from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea with expected delivery, the first, in the second half of 2021 and the second, in the first half of 2022.The provider of international seaborne crude oil and petroleum product transportation services said that with this order, if the option is exercised, its LNG proforma fleet increases to four vessels, two of which are currently employed on time-chartered contracts with major international natural gas production and trading entities.TEN continues its stated policy of maintaining a diversified energy fleet with a focus on LNG as an area of growth.

Diamond S Shipping Sells MR Vessels

Diamond S Shipping Inc, the owner and operator of crude oil and product tankers, has sold two 2008-built MR vessels, the Atlantic Aquarius and Atlantic Leo, generating approximately $11.3 million of liquidity before settlement of working capital.A non-cash write-off of $18.3 million was recognized in connection with the vessel sales, it said.Diamond S Shipping owns and operates 66 vessels on the water, including 15 Suezmax vessels, one Aframax and 50 medium-range (MR) product tankers.The company groups its business primarily by commodity transported and segments its fleet into a 16-vessel crude oil transportation fleet (the Crude Fleet) and a 50-vessel refined petroleum product transportation fleet (the Product Fleet).The Crude Fleet consists of 15 Suezmax vessels and one Aframax vessel.

MOL Names 3rd Yamal LNG Carrier

Japanese logistics major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that a naming ceremony for an ice-breaking LNG carrier, jointly ordered by MOL and China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited (China COSCO Shipping), was held at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME).The newbuilding has been named Nikolay Urvantsev, in honor of the famous Russian Arctic explorer and geologist. MOL, Makarov University Pact on Northern Sea Route

Mitsui O.S.K. TEN Charters for Two LNG Vessels

Greek shipping company Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) announced new charters for two LNG carriers, the Neo Energy and the Maria Energy to significant international energy concerns for an aggregate period of 36 months. TEN: Cautious Optimism on Shipping Market

Tsakos Orders Tankers at Sungdong

South Korean shipyard Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (Sungdong) has won an order from Greece’s Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) for two 74,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) crude-oil carriers with an option for two more. TEN has already ordered three tankers from Sungdong. The total value of the contract for the four LR1 tankers could reach up to USD 170 million. Delivery of the firm ship is due in the first half of 2018. Tsakos’s commitment is a massive boost for Sungdong after a tough period of instability and restructuring where the yard skirted with closure. Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited is a provider of international seaborne crude oil and petroleum product transportation services.

Charters of Tsakos Tankers Extended

Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) announced charter extensions with a state oil company with profit sharing provisions for four panamax tankers, with an average duration of 22 months per vessel and minimum gross revenues of $65 million. These fixtures are expected to commence between April and November of 2016 upon expiration of their existing employments and contribute, on an annualized basis, an extra $20m to the Company's bottom line. "The extension of these contracts follow our policy to increase TEN's long-term employment profile as time charter rates have finally started to reflect the strength of the spot market," Mr. Nikolas Tsakos, President and CEO of TEN commented.

One Small Step toward Sustainable Coastal Shipping

Short sea shipping is alive and well on America’s East Coast. In the United States, counties and states directly on the shoreline constitute less than 10 percent of the total land area (not including Alaska), but account for 39 percent of the total population. From 1970 to 2010, the population of these counties increased by almost 40 percent and are projected to increase by an additional 10 million people or 8 percent by 2020. Coastal areas are substantially more crowded than the U.S. as a whole, and population density in coastal areas will continue to increase in the future.

Responding to “The Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) Quandary”

I read with great dismay, the article that appeared in your magazine’s February 2013 issue, entitled “THE ARTICULATED TUG BARGE (ATB) QUANDRY”. noun, plural quandaries : a state of perplexity or uncertainty, especially as to what to do; dilemma. There is no dilemma involving AT/B’s present in the coastwise or ocean transportation marketplace. AT/B’s are indeed increasingly supplanting ships in the Jones Act coastal trade. It is a trend that is slowly beginning to spread to coastwise transport in other regions of the world as well.

AETI and L-3 Westwood to Deliver Power Systems

L-3 Westwood has contracted AETI to develop custom-built, commercially oriented marine switchgear for the two separate projects totaling slightly more than $5 million. The end customers are VT Halter Marine, a domestic ship engineering and construction company in the , and affiliates of AHL Shipping Company, a petroleum product transportation company that provides double hull tankers to the domestic petroleum industry. L-3 will provide twin shaft line electric propulsion systems to affiliates of AHL Shipping Company for the building of three, shallow-draft, 49,000 deadweight ton Jones Act and OPA90-compliant chemical product tankers in connection with a charter agreement with Shell Trading (U.S.) Company (Shell Trading). The vessels will have a cargo capacity of 330,000 barrels.

Gulf Energy Maritime Takes Delivery of Tanker

Gulf Energy Maritime has taken delivery of the second of 13 double-hulled tankers on order with Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in less than three months. The $57m Gulf Elan is the eighth double-hulled tanker in GEM’s growing fleet. The company is to receive another 11 of the total order book of 13 ships valued at $590 million by 2009 end. The ship was named by lady sponsor Jane Slemeck, wife of Mark Slemeck, managing director of Kingfish Services Ltd., London-based operators for IPC/Itochu Petroleum which has time chartered the ship for one year. Gulf Elan will follow the trading path of its sister ship, Gulf Esprit, delivered to GEM last November, by going into time charter with Oman Methanol Company, a subsidiary of Oman’s giant Omzest Group, on a 15-year deal.

GEM's Gulf Esprit Named

The $55mGulf Esprit - the first of 13 double-hulled tankers ordered by Dubai-headquartered Gulf Energy Maritime (GEM), the Middle East's largest independent commercial product tanker operator - has been named at Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The 47,000 dwt Gulf Esprit is the seventh double-hulled tanker in GEM's rapidly growing fleet - now one of the youngest in the world. The company is to receive another 12 hi-specification vessels with an order book value of USD 570 million by 2009 end. Delivery of the Gulf Esprit, which will go into time charter with Oman Methanol Company, a subsidiary of Oman's giant OMZEST Group, on a 15-year deal, takes GEM's asset value to $1.1b.
