Wärtsilä Wins Vietnam Order

Wärtsilä received an order for a propulsion package from Vietnam in September 2007. The contract was awarded by the Ben Kien Shipyard in Haiphong and involves the supply of a propulsion package for a 564 TEU multi-purpose carrier to be built for Hai Duong Shipbuilding & Shipping Company, both companies being subsidiaries of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin Group). The vessel, designed by Marine Design & Research Institute of China, has a length of 115.0 m, and a moulded breadth of 20.8 m. The Wärtsilä propulsion package will comprise an eight-cylinder Wärtsilä 38 diesel engine, 4.40 m-diameter four-bladed controllable-pitch (CP) propeller, shafting, reduction gearbox, stern tube and shaft seals.

MAN L27/38 Propulsion Package for ‘Cattleya-trawler’

Esbjerg-based Danish owner Flemming Pedersen has ordered a replacement for his 2006-trawler - scheduled for 2012 delivery, but now larger, more advanced and again powered by MAN Diesel & Turbo’s L27/38 propulsion package. MAN Wins Power Contract for Spanish Ships

Spains's Empresa Naviera Elcano, S.A., aninternational shipping group, placed an order for two medium-speed MAN L27/38 engines as part of a propulsion package for a new vessel. The units will be constructed at the MAN Diesel & Turbo facility in Frederikshavn, Denmark, and will power a 7,000-dwt asphalt and oil-products tanker to be built at Sedef Shipyard in Turkey. The 6-cylinder main engines each deliver 2,040 kW at 800 rpm. MAN Propulsion Package for New Italian RoRo

Italian Visemar's new RoRo (construction at Cantiere Navale Visentini yard, near Venice) will be powered by twin MAN engines. The vessel will be powered by a complete MAN propulsion package featuring 2 × 9L32/44CR medium-speed engines., which each develop 5,040 kW at 750 rpm and are complemented by 2 × Renk RSV 900C gearboxes and 2 × Alpha CPP propellers. The engines fulfill IMO Tier II regulations and will be built at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Augsburg works in Germany from where they are scheduled for delivery in August 2013.

Chinese Ferry Orders Propulsion Package

Weihai Haida Ferry Co., operating in NE China, has placed an order for a 2,200-passenger/1100-lane-metre Ropax ferry featuring a MAN Diesel & Turbo propulsion package. Weihai Haida is the exclusive operator on the route between the major cities of Weihai and Dalian on opposite sides of the Bohai strait in NE China where it undertakes a Ropax service. The company currently has two vessels in its fleet operating on the route – the ‘Xin Shen Shen’ and ‘Shen Shen 1’ – with the former shortly due to exit service.

Wärtsilä Repeat Orders from Russia

Wärtsilä has received several orders for propulsion systems from Russian organizations recently. The most recent contracts include repeat orders for integrated electro-propulsion packages for new state-owned Multipurpose Salvage Vessels, which are part of a national program to develop Russia's transportation system over the next five years. Last year, Wärtsilä was contracted to deliver an integrated electro-propulsion package for a state-owned Multipurpose Salvage Vessel (MPSV) being built at the Nevsky Shipyard in Schlisselburg, close to St Petersburg.

MAN Diesel & Turbo Tallies Chinese Dredger Contracts

Over a period of four months, MAN Diesel & Turbo has won contracts for four Chinese dredger newbuildings. Chinese outfits CHECD, Jiangsu Haixin and Huanghua Port Bureau recently chose MAN medium-speed engines for trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) newbuildings. CHEC Dredging Company Ltd. (CHECD) – a subsidiary of CCCC Shanghai Dredging Company Ltd., a branch of CCCC Dredging Company Ltd. (CDC), one of the leading dredging companies in the world and the largest in China – chose complete propulsion packages from MAN Diesel & Turbo for their new 2 × 6,500 m3 TSHDs.

Six New Chemical Tankers to Feature Wärtsilä Propulsion

Wärtsilä received an order to supply complete main propulsion systems for six new chemical tankers. The ships are being built at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group yard in China on behalf of Stolt Tankers B.V., the operator of one of the world's largest chemical tanker fleets and a unit of Stolt-Nielsen Limited. There is an option for a further two vessels. The Wärtsilä propulsion packages include Wärtsilä RT-flex50 two-stroke engines, controllable pitch propellers with a tunnel gearbox and shaft generator and oily water separators.

Rolls-Royce to Power Ice-Class MPV

Rolls-Royce secured a contract to supply a power and propulsion package for an ice-class multipurpose vessel under construction at Keppel Singmarine for Singaporean shipowner New Orient Marine Pte Ltd. The propulsion package includes a 1,650kW and two 3,000kW tunnel thrusters, two US ARC 0.8 main azimuth thrusters and a single 3,000kW retractable thruster. As well as four Bergen B32:40V12ACD and two Bergen C25:33L6ACD generating sets which will supply the requisite power to the £132 million offshore vessel.

MAN B&W to Power MAERSK AHTS

MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Frederikshavn, Denmark has been awarded a contract to supply complete twin-screw twin-in/single-out medium speed propulsion packages for eight Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels (AHTS). The newbuildings, which will be built by Aker Yards AS, Norway, were ordered by the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group’s Maersk Supply Service. The finalized vessels are expected to be delivered from Norway (from both Aker’s Brattvaag and Langsten shipyards) with two month intervals during 2008 and 2009. MAN Diesel & Turbo’s medium-speed propulsion packages have gained another foothold in Middle Eastern offshore operations. After successfully completed seatrials, Abu Dhabi-based Adyard has earlier delivered the ‘Topaz Dignity’ – which is now followed by the ‘Topaz Triumph’ AHTS. Topaz Energy and Marine, a subsidiary of Oman-based Renaissance Services SAOG and a regional leader in providing offshore support vessels and engineering services, has passed yet another milestone in its 35-year history by building two Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels.

Abu Dhabi-based Adyard has delivered two AHTS vessels equipped with MAN L27/38 propulsion packages. The two Topaz Energy & Marine 67-metre (80-ton bollard pull) vessels are ready for anchor handling tug supply services and the transportation of dry and liquid cargo to and from pipe-laying barges, drilling platforms and production platforms for offshore operations. The Topaz Dignity will operate on behalf of BP, the oil and gas major, on a long-term-contract basis in the Caspian Sea – whilst Topaz Triumph may remain in the Middle East and be operated by Topaz Marine MENA.

MAN Propels Purse Seiners Series

In February, a new propulsion package contract was made between the Peruvian company COPEINCA (Corporacion Pesquera Inca S.A.) and MAN Diesel & Turbo, Frederikshavn. Three newbuildings powered by 6L21/31-VBS propulsion packages are to operate off the coast of Peru – primarily for anchovy fishing for the production of fish meal. When the ships’ annual quota has been utilized (takes between 20 days and three months depending on the capacity and vessel efficiency), the vessels convert to mackerel and horse mackerel fishing for the rest of the year.

Spanish tuna vessel opts for fuel-efficient propulsion package. Based in Spain, the Pevasa Group recently ordered a complete propulsion system from MAN Diesel and Turbo for a new tuna vessel. The system is unique in that it comprises a package of three high-efficiency products, including a modern, medium-speed MAN 8L32/44CR engine with common-rail (CR) technology, a Renk RSVL-950 gear unit, and an innovative MAN Alpha VBS1100 CP propeller with Kappel propeller blade designs and rudder bulb.

CP Propeller Drive Celebrates 100 Years

MAN B&W Diesel has been part of the propeller business from the very beginning. The first Alpha Controllable Pitch Propeller was produced in 1902 and patented in 1903. In the meantime, more than 6500 MAN B&W propellers have gone into service. A great variety of CP Propellers with Propulsion Control Systems for all applications up to to-day’s 30 000 kW range. On 3 December 1903 the CP Propeller patent came into force, and the past CPP-century was celebrated with a propeller conference at MAN B&W Diesel in Denmark exactly on the anniversary day 3 December 2003. MAN Propulsion to Power Seismic Vessel

MAN Diesel & Turbo recently signed a contract for the supply of 8L32/44CR B.2 engines as part of a complete propulsion package to power a seismic vessel ordered by GC Rieber Shipping of Norway. The contract contains an option for an extra vessel. Four of the engines, along with two two-speed Flender Twin-In/Single-Out reduction gears and MAN Alpha Twin Screw CP propellers in AHT nozzles, will power the vessel. The seismic vessel is graded as Ice Class 1A*, which provides a good basis for operating in Arctic areas.

ABB Wins $45M in Propulsion Contracts

ABB in Norway has secured new contracts worth $45 million for delivery of complete electric propulsion systems to two icebreakers to be built for CJSV Sevmorneftegaz by the Norwegian shipyard Havyard Leirvik, and four Platform Supply Vessels to be built in China for Groupe Bourbon by Zhejiang Shipbuilding. The contracts with Havyard Leirvik encompass system supply to two multifunctional icebreaking offshore supply vessels for the Russian company CJSV Sevmorneftegaz. For each vessel, ABB will deliver a main propulsion package including Azipod propulsion system and a complete onboard electric power plant. The ships will be delivered in 2005 and 2006 for service in the Prirazlomnoye oil field in the Barents Sea.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has secured a contract for the supply of four 9L48/60CR engines for the diesel-mechanical propulsion of two passenger ferries for Chinese shipping companies, Huadong Ferry and Dadong Ferry. The two newbuildings are currently under construction at Huanghai Shipyard in Shangdong, China. Caterpillar to Acquire Berg Propulsion

Caterpillar Inc. signed a definitive agreement to acquire Johan Walter Berg AB, including its core brand of Berg Propulsion, a leading manufacturer of mechanically and electrically driven propulsion systems and marine controls for ships. With the acquisition, Caterpillar will transition from selling only engines and generators to providing complete marine propulsion package systems. Headquartered in Öckerö Islands, Sweden, Berg has designed and manufactured heavy-duty marine thrusters and controllable pitch propellers since 1929.

MAN Power & Propulsion Package for New Seismic Vessel

MAN Diesel & Turbo has contracted to supply 8L32/44CR B.2 engines as part of a complete propulsion package to power a seismic vessel ordered by GC Rieber Shipping of Norway. Four of the engines, along with 2 × 2-speed Flender Twin-In/Single-Out reduction gears and MAN Alpha Twin Screw CP propellers in AHT nozzles, will power the vessel which is classed as Ice Class 1A*. The vessel design is an ST 324 XT from Skipsteknisk of Aalesund, Norway whose hull will be constructed in Poland with outfitting subsequently carried out at the Myklebust shipyard north of Aalesund.
