Modernization for Two Swedish Icebreakers

Protacon, a company based in Jyväskylä, Finland, informs it has received an order from Swedish Maritime Administration for the modernization of electric and automation systems of two icebreakers. The contract entrusts Protacon with the modernization of electric propulsion drives and drive control systems for the Swedish icebreakers, Atle and Frej. The Swedish Maritime Administration wants to uniform the techniques of its icebreakers to facilitate their usability and maintenance, Protacon said. The modernization will naturally also improve the reliability of operation and increase the service lives of the ships. Now approximately 40 years old, Atle and Frej will gain a remarkably longer lifespan.

Protacon, based in Finland, contracted by Viking Supply Ships to modernize the Swedish ice-breaker 'Ymer'. The modernization project comprises the DC drives of Ymer's propulsion machinery and the related control units as well as other control equipment in the navigation bridge and the engine room. The modernization will significantly extend the service life of the ship, which was originally launched into sea in 1976. "Together with the highly successful Urho project [a sister ship], Ymer's 16.2 MW DC electrical drives provide strong evidence of Protacon's knowhow of large electric drives.

Compared to its predecessors, icebreaker Urho was at the time of its construction in 1975 an exponent of highly advanced technology and it, actually, still is part of the elite of the icebreakers in the Baltic Sea. The modernization work the icebreaker Urho will undergo is the largest ever done to the ship. It will take about four years work and will start immediately.
