As nations commit to reducing greenhouse gases, a fishing vessel is designed to do its share. Designed by Norway’s Skipsteknisk and Selvåg AS, it is in build at Cemre Shipyard for Sorheim Holding, the Selvåg Senior is a remarkable concept. Capable of both trawling and purse seining, the 79.5- x16.2-m vessel will have a molded depth of 6.9 m. The RSW holds, in the DNV-GL classed vessel, will have a total volume of just under 2550 cu. m.. The main propulsion engine will be a medium-speed Wärtsilä 8V31DF, producing 4,800 kW at 750 RPM.

The concept of “hybrid tug” is getting a whole new definition with an innovative new tug under construction at Turkey’s Uzmar Shipyard for the Danish Port of Aarhus. Cummins Inc. launched the QSK60 EPA Tier 4 / IMO III at Cummins Marine’s virtual showcase on Wednesday, April 14. The new EPA Tier 4 compliant selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system is being paired with the QSK60 engine to address the impact of stricter emissions regulations on commercial marine markets in North America. The new system mitigates downtime and improves total cost of ownership, the manufacturer said. “For a lot of customers in the marine market, uptime is their biggest concern,” said Eddie Brown, market segment leader for Cummins Marine.

Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels are essential tools in the search for oil  in deeper waters, further from shore-based facilities. Typically, the large FPSO is stationary with a number of wells feeding oil into its holds. The oil can then be pumped off to shuttle tankers that transport it to shore side tanks and refineries.FPSOs are big expensive pieces of equipment. Some of them are converted from ocean going oil tankers. Such is the case with the 333 by 60-meter, very large crude carrier, VLCC Ariake, which was purchased for conversion to an FPSO.

How do you see business today, and where is Cummins looking for opportunities as COVID-19 and volatile oil markets generate market uncertainty?Even in the current state, we are still seeing a solid level of interest and activity in the commercial marine space. Scheduling has been impacted and some areas have slowed down, but overall, the marine industry is very much still active around the world. When we take a closer look at some of the segments within the commercial marine space, differences begin to emerge.

Hines Furlong Line currently has a trio of identical 6,000-horsepower towboats on order at C&C Marine and Repair in Belle Chasse, La.The timing is right to order the high-power newbuilds, said Kent Furlong, president and founder of Hines Furlong Line (HFL), citing the long-term implications of Subchapter M and the industry’s aging higher horsepower line haul fleet as key drivers behind the decision. “Many of the high-horsepower vessels in the HFL fleet are among the oldest,” he said.

The Zhoushan Islands are just off shore of east China's Zhejiang province, and lie south of Shanghai on Hangzhou Bay. The main island is home to a naval base, shipyards and a port. It is a busy island with a well-developed ferry system carrying both people and vehicles back and forth to the mainland. A fine new 690-passenger ferry, Zhoushan Islands Prosperity, has recently been added to this fleet of vessels. It is the largest ferry to date from the Hunan Xiangchuan Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd.

Cummins Inc. revealed today the company’s solution for the impending start of International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emission regulations, using proven Tier II engine technology and adding a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system. The eighth Incat Crowther-designed vessel for Tanzanian operator Azam Marine, passenger ferry Kilimanjaro VI, has been launched. Built by Richardson Devine Marine, the 39-meter catamaran ferry builds on the operational experience of the fleet and brings improvements to passenger accommodation and propulsion, as well as a new, sleeker appearance, the designer said. Kilimanjaro VI features four ramps per side to load passengers and luggage. Two ramps per side service economy class passengers, leading them directly to the aft stairs to the upper deck and the main deck economy cabin respectively.

The Peruvian Navy has recently taken delivery of a well-equipped dive support vessel (DSV) from the shipyard Servicios Industriales de la Marina S.A. (SIMA). Designed in-house by the shipyard, the new 4400 HP vessel has significant towing capabilities and can act as a salvage tug. The 32 by 12-meter vessel has a molded depth of 4.5 meters on a finely-shaped, double chined hull. A four point anchoring system as well as a launch and recovery system for deploying an open diving bell are among the effective salvage and dive-support deck equipmet.

Incat Crowther delivered Kilimanjaro V, the eighth Incat Crowther designed vessel for the Tanzania-based operator Azam Marine. Built by Richardson Devine Marine of Tasmania, Australia, the 39m Catamaran Passenger Ferry is a rugged and efficient catamaran, designed specifically as a high capacity passenger and cargo vessel for the operator’s new route, an exposed and sometimes rough run from Dar Es Salaam to the island of Pemba via Zanzibar. As capacities of successive Kilimanjaro vessels have increased together with spectacular patronage growth since the series of vessels were introduced, increasing emphasis has been placed passenger experience including boarding and disembarkation.

There is no question that these are challenging times for offshore oil in the Gulf of Mexico. However, while some vessel operators are tying up boats, Bordelon Marine is continuing with its aggressive build program. Designed for flexibility, the firm’s Stingray 260 Class DP 2 platform supply vessels are proving their design concept. A new shallow-draft anchor-handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel has been delivered to Russian inland waterways operator and offshore logistics service provider, Ark Shipping. The AHTS Antarctic, designed by Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) in close cooperation with the owner, is partly based on the design of another OSD-designed ship, the Arctic, which was delivered to Ark Shipping in 2012. The DP1 vessel has a Bureau Veritas Ice Class Notation, and is fully equipped to operate in the Caspian Sea, where ice formation of around 80 cm during the winter period is not unusual.

Hy-Line Cruises, a division of Hyannis Harbor Tours, Inc., Hyannis, Mass., has taken delivery of Grey Lady IV, a new 493-passenger, high-speed catamaran from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, the Duclos Corporation. Incat Crowther has announced the launch of Grey Lady IV, the fourth catamaran ferry designed by Incat Crowther and built by Gladding Hearn for Hyline Cruises of Hyannis, Massachusetts. The new vessel was commissioned in response to increased ridership and a passenger preference for a fast service with better amenity, and is an evolutionary step from the three previous vessels from the designer / builder collaboration. The 47m catamaran is the largest in the fleet with additional passenger capacity, an increased luggage space and a VIP lounge.
