Ocean Liner Queen Mary Rings in 80 Years
Beloved ocean liner Queen Mary turns 80 on September 26, and the public is invited to join a ship-wide celebration. The Queen Mary will open her gangways and ballrooms, decks and salons, attractions and eateries to a daylong celebration. There will be no charge for admission to the ship (10 a.m. - 7 p.m.), discounted ship tours and $5 parking. Commemorations will include the reading of letters by King George V at the ship's launch on Sept. 26, 1934, and a recent congratulatory message from Queen Elizabeth II on the ship's 80th anniversary.
Cunard Narrows Field To Five
Cunard Line says it has five bids from European shipyards to build the Queen Mary 2, a rare new transatlantic liner that will rank with the world's largest passenger ships upon its completion in 2003. "Some yards are quoting bids in euros, some in D-marks, some in pound sterling," Cunard Line President Larry Pimentel said. Pimentel declined to identify the shipyards in a brief interview after a news conference aboard Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2 but said all bidders were based in Europe. He also declined to provide details of the bids or finances for the planned Queen Mary 2, a successor with a "wedding cake" profile to the Queen Mary, built in 1936 for Cunard-White Star Line. The company announced plans to build the Queen Mary 2 in November.
Queen to Name QM2
Cunard is delighted to confirm that Her Majesty The Queen will name the company's new flagship Queen Mary 2 at a ceremony to take place in Southampton, England, on Thursday, January 8, 2004. Her Majesty will be accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. The launch will be a milestone in British maritime history and will be a major event of worldwide interest. Coast Guard to Conduct Investigation of QM2 Incident
The Captain of the Queen Mary 2 reported to the Coast Guard the ship had experienced a noise and unusual vibration in the engine room, five miles outside of the Port of Everglades and had reason to believe they may have struck a submerged object. According to a statement released by Princess Cruises, bridge instruments indicated a problem with one of the ship’s four propulsion motors. A Captain of the Port Order was issued by the Coast Guard requiring the Queen Mary 2 to use tug-boats to assist in returning to port. The vessel will be required to remain at the pier until the Coast Guard determines if the vessels and its passengers are safe. There have been no reports of injury or pollution as this time. The cause of the noise and vibration are not known at this time.
Carnival Corp. Finalizes Contract For Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2
Carnival Corp. announced it has finalized a contract with France's Alstom Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard for the construction of the Queen Mary 2, a new 150,000-ton "liner-style" vessel for its Cunard Line unit. The largest ocean liner ever constructed, Queen Mary 2 will have a basis-two capacity of 2,620 and will be built at a cost of approximately $780 million. Expected to enter service in late 2003, the Queen Mary 2 represents the first new ocean liner constructed in more than three decades. At 1,132 ft. (345 m) and 17 decks high, the vessel will stretch nearly four football fields in length with a height equal to a 23-story building. Queen Mary 2 will also have a beam of 135 ft. (41.1 m), making it the longest and widest passenger ship ever constructed.
Master of QM2 Named Commodore
Captain Ronald Warwick, master of Cunard Line's new Queen Mary 2, has been awarded the rank of commodore, the highest position a cruise line can bestow on one of its captains. The announcement was made December 26, 2003, as Queen Mary 2 was welcomed to Southampton - her British home port - for the very first time. "I am pleased to make this appointment, which recognises Ron Warwick's long and distinguished career with this great company," said Pamela Conover, Cunard's president and chief operating officer. Queen Mary 2 is the first ocean liner to be built in over three decades. The 2,620-passenger vessel is the largest (151,400 tons), longest (1,132 feet/345 metres), tallest (236 feet/72 metres), widest (135 feet/41 metres) and most expensive ($800 million) passenger ship ever built.
Coast Guard Airlifts Queen Mary II Crewman
A man was airlifted by the Coast Guard off the cruise ship Queen Mary II 125 nautical miles southeast of the North Carolina’s Outer Banks after the onboard physician diagnosed the man with internal bleeding. Jason Parra, 36, was hoisted off the Queen Mary II by a rescue-helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., and was accompanied by a rescue airplane from Air Station Elizabeth City. Para was taken to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital in Norfolk, Va., and is listed in stable condition. At the time, the Queen Mary II was on its way to New York City.
Rolls-Royce Completes Queen Mary 2 Order
The last 40 ft. long stabilizer bound for French shipyards to complete the construction of Queen Mary 2 leaves Rolls-Royce’s Dunfermline site this week. Each stabilizer will be loaded on to a flatbed trailer and will require a police escort to Rosyth where it will then be shipped to Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France where the Queen Mary 2 is under construction. The fins, when fitted, will extend from the hull below the ship’s water line to provide enhanced stability at sea. Rolls-Royce, which manufactures the world-famous Brown Brothers range of ship stabilizers, has taken a year to complete the four 100 ton, folding fin stabilizers- each the size of a two story house for the luxury liner.
Fresh Paint Job for the Queen Mary
Restoration work has started on iconic steamship TS Queen Mary, which is in the process of being transformed into one of the U.K.’s largest interactive maritime exhibits. Regarded as the vanguard of 1930s Scottish engineering, Queen Mary was built in 1933 and is the last of its class in the world. Now the 252-foot vessel is set to become a visitor attraction which will make a major social contribution to the City of Glasgow. As part of the vessel’s transformation, specialist coatings supplied by AkzoNobel’s International brand are being applied to the ship at dry dock in Greenock.
Cunard Considers Pacific Runs For QE2
Cunard Line will likely pull the Queen Elizabeth 2 from its traditional trans-Atlantic runs and possibly redeploy the storied cruise ship in the Pacific once the $780 million Queen Mary 2 is launched in late 2003. "We are thinking of placing the Queen Mary 2 on routes very similar to the Queen Elizabeth 2," Peter Cox, itinerary director for Cunard, said. A unit of Miami-based Carnival Corp., Cunard last November sealed a deal with a French shipyard to build the 2,620-passenger Queen Mary 2. At 150,000 tons, the Queen Mary 2, whose namesake is now a tourist attraction permanently berthed in California, will be the biggest cruise ship afloat. Royal Caribbean Cruises twin ships, Voyager of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas, are now the world's largest cruise vessels at about 137,000 tons.
Security fit for Queens
The U.S. Coast Guard is establishing security zones 150 yards in radius around the cruise ships Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 during the former ship’s inaugural visit to New York Harbor. In addition, there will be a no meeting/no passing zone while these ships are in transit north of the Verrazano Bridge. The Queen Mary 2 arrives on April 22 and the Queen Elizabeth 2 arrives on April 24. Both ships depart on the evening of April 25. (HK Law).

QM2 Passes Sea Trials

QM2 to Arrive in NYC
When QE2 arrives in New York on 25 April and berths next to Queen Mary 2 it will be the first time since March 1940 that two Cunard Queens have berthed together in the port. Queen Mary 2 is the first true transatlantic liner to have been built since the line's legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 entered service in May 1969. The historic ceremony at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard here included the symbolic changing of the flag where the Blue ensign and the Cunard house flag -- a gold lion rampant on a red background -- were raised.

Cunard cruise ship 'Queen Mary 2', is set to make its maiden call in the capital on 29th January. Queen Mary 2’s stop in Abu Dhabi is part of her 2013 World Voyage – a 106-day voyage from Southampton in the UK which will take in five continents – and is considered a significant boost to the UAE capital as it increasingly becomes an established global cruise destination. Hotel Internet Services (HIS) and Queen Mary IT staff have selected and deployed Ruckus ZoneFlex Smart wireless LAN (WLAN) products, enabling wireless connectivity from any of the hotel's guestrooms and common areas in order to support the ship's more than three million yearly visitors.
Blohm + Voss Gets QM2 Repair Contract
Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 will arrive in Hamburg at Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH on November 8 for maintenance and repair work. The Queen Mary 2, which was built in 2003, will go into drydock Elbe 17 for maintenance work for the first time. Classification work and extensive painting work will be carried out in the dock. The propulsion units, the anchor winches as well as the four stabilizers will also be overhauled. Owing to the tight agenda and relatively short lay days in Hamburg, Blohm + Voss Repair employees were already on board the cruise liner in Southampton to carry out the necessary preparations for the work. The Queen Mary 2 will leave the Hanseatic City again on November 19.

Pimentel said at the news conference the Queen Mary 2 would carry 2,500 passengers, would be extremely long and built along sleek lines to speed voyages across the northern Atlantic.
Queen Mary 2 Skips Wellington
Mega-cruise ship Queen Mary 2 has ditched its Wellington visit with the capital in sight on account of heavy swells caused by Cyclone Pam. The Queen Mary 2 was due in Wellington this morning after spending time in the Marlborough Sounds, but 8-metre swells at the entrance to the harbour meant it was too risky. The vessel has a deep draft which doesn't leave much margin for error, harbourmaster Mike Price told said. The 345-metre long ship, which can carry more than 3000 passengers, was sailing on to Auckland via the west coast to avoid the rough seas created by Pam, he said.
Queen Mary 2 Commences Production With First Steel Cut
Pamela Conover, Cunard Line's president and COO, will make history today when she presses the button to start the cutting of the first steel for Queen Mary 2 - the largest, longest, widest, tallest and most expensive passenger ship ever. Queen Mary 2, the first liner to be built in over three decades, will enter service in January 2004 and will be the fastest passenger ship built since QE2 entered service in 1969. Constructed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, France, birthplace of such famous liners as Normandie, France (now Norway) and Ile de France, the 150,000-ton QM2 is destined to become the benchmark by which all other passenger ships will be judged.
Schat-Harding Wins Queen Mary II lifesaving contract
Schat-Harding has won a major contract to supply the lifeboats, davits and fast rescue craft to the Cunard newbuilding cruiseship Queen Mary II, under construction at France's Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard. Schat-Harding will also supply full sets of lifesaving equipment to the two cruiseships building for Mediterranean Shipping Company at Chantiers.
