AUKUS Defense Ministers Agree to Bolster Security

Kongsberg Norcontrol IT to Deliver VTMIS

Kongsberg Norcontrol IT will deliver a new VTMIS (Vessel Traffic Management and Information System) with Traffic Separation Schemes for the Canary Islands to Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima (SASEMAR) in Spain. TECOSA, Spain has contracted Kongsberg Norcontrol IT to supply its VTMIS5060 system to provide increased maritime safety for the Canary Islands' coastal waters and surrounding seas. The existing Norcontrol system in Las Palmas and the present VTS system in Tenerife supplied by another supplier, will be replaced by the new Kongsberg Norcontrol IT system. The new system will comprise a control centre located in Tenerife with one radar site, and a second control centre in Las Palmas with two radar sites.

VTMS to Help Ensure Safe Passage for Tankers

Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems (OR&SS) has completed final acceptance testing of its Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) in Valdez, Alaska. The project, valued at $1.2 million, will assist the USCG in helping to ensure safe passage for oil tanker ships passing through Prince William Sound into the Port of Valdez Bay to take on oil pumped from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. USCG concerns about Y2K compliance along with Prince William Sound's notoriety were equally important reasons for the initial OR&SS system to be put in place this year. The USCG plans to continue upgrading the capability of the Prince William Sound VTMS next year.
