A three-year EU-funded project, CASCADe, has developed new methodologies in which information is shared and displayed on a ship’s bridge, helping to improve efficiency on board and contribute toward the prevention of accidents at sea. Drawing directly from the experience of seafarers, CASCADe has developed a new adaptive bridge design methodology that treats both human agents and electronic equipment as parts of a cooperative system. This allows for the sharing of information to be optimized. In addition, CASCADe has developed a set of adaptive bridge displays.

Raytheon Company announced the launch of its new subsidiary, Raytheon Anschuetz USA LLC, located in San Diego, Calif. According to the company, Raytheon Anschuetz USA LLC aims to reinforce customer care and support for Raytheon Anschütz navigation systems in the United States for commercial ship owners and shipyards as well as government entities, including the Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, Navy and Army. “In January 2012, Raytheon Anschütz returned to the U.S. navigation systems market with the establishment of a San Diego-based regional sales office. Now, we are taking the next step to becoming America’s new center of navigation excellence,” said Frank Christophersen, president of the new subsidiary.

German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has established its new subsidiary Raytheon Anschuetz Panama, S. de R.L., in Panama City. The new company, to open on February 1, 2015, will be positioned as the regional customer support and service coordination center, including service training capabilities and a large spare parts depot for Panama, Middle and South America and the Caribbean. On opening day of SMM, the German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz officially launched the newly developed NautoScan NX network radar transceivers, the centerpiece of its next generation Synapsis Radar system. The new NautoScan NX transceivers generate raw radar video, which is distributed via Gigabit LAN. Raytheon Anschütz announced the recent contract award for its SMARTBLUE maritime situational awareness system on board two vessels being built in South Korea for a major oil and gas company. The two vessels will operate on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. For each vessel, Raytheon Anschütz will provide two 12ft X-band radars integrated with AIS to a SMARTBLUE sensor management pack. The pack will correlate the incoming data from the sensors and provide information locally through an operator workstation located in the vessel’s central control room.

German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz announced the launch of navigation system innovations as well as improvements to existing technologies for this year’s SMM. The world’s first IMO-certified Integrated Navigation System (INS), Synapsis Intelligent Bridge Control, will take the center stage at the Raytheon Anschütz booth. About two years after product launch, more than 100 Synapsis systems have been contracted and more than half of them are already in operation.

The German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz announced the launch of a new generation navigation radar for this year’s SMM. The new radar is distinguished mainly by two innovations on the transceiver: Network technology replaces analog data transmission, and a pedestal which is newly constructed electrically and mechanically reduces cost of ownership and simplifies service. The new NautoScan NX radar transceivers are based on modern hardware and software infrastructure to achieve highest reliability on a high performance level.

Raytheon Anschütz, a German-based navigation system supplier, delivers its 15,000th Standard 22 Gyro Compass in June 2014. Onboard the superyacht Esmeralda the jubilee compass will replace an old Anschütz Standard 4 Gyro Compass which has been in operation for more than 30 years. The new generation of the Anschütz Gyro Compass – Standard 22 – was presented 10 years ago at SMM in Hamburg. Today, approximately 1,800 Standard 22 compasses are sold per year. Under the contract, Nor Lines has ordered 10 ECDIS 24 systems for installations on board of five ships, with MV Cometa being the first vessel to be refitted. All five shipsets will be supplied and commissioned by Raytheon Anschütz’ Norwegian distributor Syberg AS. The ECDIS 24 retrofit package consists of a 24” TFT Panel- PC, an interface box providing all necessary interfaces as required by the ECDIS performance standard IEC61174, trackball, DVD drive and cabling. The exchange of data, routes and charts between the two ECDIS onboard will be easily realized via LAN network cable.

While the Integrated Bridge increasingly plays a bigger role in various shipbuilding programs, in many cases the degree of integration can be limited and does not allows a fully functional integration of different navigation systems or further ship systems on the bridge. In tandem there has been an increasing demand for higher level integrated bridge systems, which was reasonably driven by more sophisticated and safety-sensitive vessels such as cruise ships, specialized vessels and few oil tankers.

With the new Horizon MF the German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz launches a new generation gyro compass which can be operated free of maintenance. Horizon MF is Raytheon Anschütz’ new strap down compass system which uses Hemispherical Resonator Gyros (HRG) to measure angular rates for heading calculation. In a strapped-down system angular rate gyros and accelerometers are not gimballed but mounted stationary in a housing. The sensor measures angular rates and accelerations in three axes.

Raytheon to unveil at upcoming CANSEC 2013 Expo an onboard navigation simulator that allows operators to train with the system they will use at sea. Raytheon Anschuetz, a German based, indirect, wholly-owned subsidiary of Raytheon Company, developed the embedded, simulation-based training system in partnership with Canadian-based Virtual Marine Technology (VMT) to enhance the realism and effectiveness of training offered to operators of Anschuetz's Integrated Navigation System.

Almost 80% of collisions and groundings occur due to a failure of bridge systems and their usage. A new three-year European research project, part funded by the EU has been launched to help increase safety onboard vessels. CASCADe, (model-based Cooperative and Adaptive ship-based Context Aware Design) aims to address the lack of symbiosis which exists between current bridge design, operational procedures and the end user. In the maritime environment there is a proliferation of increasingly complex technology. Studies have shown that the use of instruments with a range of different user interfaces or the provision of too much information can lead to errors and a reduction in performance.

Germany-based Raytheon Anschuetz with Italian provider Seastema, to deliver Integrated Bridge & Navigation Systems (IBNS) for two Italian Coast Guard military patrol vessels. The vessels are currently being built at Fincantieri's Castellammare di Stabia (Naples) shipyard. Delivery of the IBNS will be the first military application under a teaming agreement between Raytheon Anschuetz and Seastema. Together, the companies will provide Italy's Coast Guard patrol vessels with the latest generation IBNS, fully integrated with Seastema's SEAS-Navy ship automation system.

Germany’s Raytheon Anschütz won a contract to supply NautoSteer Advanced Steering Gear Control Systems to two prototype cruise ships being built at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard for Carnival Corporation. The new ships will operate under their Princess Cruises brand, and at 141,000 gt and with a capacity of 3,600 passengers, the ships will be the flagships in the Princess fleet and the largest ships ever built at Fincantieri. The delivery of the first ship – Royal Princess – is planned for spring 2013, the second is expected one year later.

The German navigation specialist Raytheon Anschütz introduces a newly developed wireless battery monitoring technology. The core of the system is a new sensor that features an innovative measurement concept to provide highest failure safety while contributing to cost savings during installation and servicing. Raytheon Anschütz, as a subsidiary of the Raytheon Company, presents a wireless battery monitoring demonstration at this year’s UDT in London. The Wireless Battery Monitoring System (WBMS) is the central measuring and evaluation system for main batteries aboard submarines.

Raytheon Anschuetz Singapore Pte Ltd. has been awarded a contract about the supply of an Integrated Bridge and Navigation System to a new Platform Supply Ship (PSV) built at Nam Cheong Dockyard of Malaysia. The delivery will take place Q3 2012. The 79 meters long, DNV classed vessel will be equipped with a Raytheon Anschütz Integrated Bridge System, projected and supplied by Raytheon Anschuetz Singapore. These will be the world’s first hybrid diesel electric Ro Ro vehicle and passenger ferries to enter service and will be operating the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Service from spring 2013. The green technology will be incorporated throughout the ships, supplying a minimum of 20% of the energy consumed on board. SES will be fitting a full specification of electronics on the hybrid ferries including Furuno Radars and Transas ECDIS. Raytheon Anschütz has established a  new subsidiary Raytheon Anschuetz do Brasil Sistemas Marítimos Ltda. With the new company, Raytheon Anschütz intends to expand its sales and service activities in South America. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Raytheon Anschuetz do Brasil will provide Brazilian shipyards and shipowners with local know-how in maritime system integration and after sales services. This includes supply and systems integration for Raytheon Anschütz navigation components: gyro compasses, autopilots and steering systems, Radars, ECDIS, and complete integrated bridge systems.

Safebridge will show a full working version of its ECDIS familiarisation course at SMM Hamburg. The full working version of the ECDIS familiarisation course will be linked via the web to the Safebridge online server and the original manufacturer’s own software. Having released the first course covering type-specific training on the Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine VisionMaster FT5 in May, Safebridge is now finalising courseware for its other manufacturing partners, which include Raytheon Anschuetz, Transas Marine, JRC, Imtech, ChartWorld, Sam Electronics and 7Cs. The Safebridge courses are true simulation conducted remotely and not using CDs or DVDs, which allow the student to study from anywhere with a good Internet connection.
