FMC Addresses Detention and Demurrage, and Data Initiatives

The Federal Maritime Commission met in both open and closed session today to be briefed on efforts to address detention and demurrage, improve supply chain data transparency, and an ongoing investigation of Canadian government regulations that affect U.S. flag Great Lakes shipping. Senate Confirms Three to Serve on Federal Maritime Commission

The U.S. Senate has confirmed the nominations of three individuals to serve as Federal Maritime Commissioners: Rebecca F. Dye, Michael A. Khouri and Daniel B. Maffei. Dye and Khouri, both of whom currently serve as Commissioners, were renominated by the President to serve in terms that will last until 2020 and 2021 respectively. Maffei is new to the Commission and will serve a term that expires in 2017. “I applaud the action taken by the Senate yesterday. Each of these individuals is not only committed to public service, they also take the core mission of the Commission seriously,” said Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Mario Cordero. “The shipping industry is going through a period of significant change that dictates our close attention.

US Leaders Work toward Supply Chain Innovation

The Federal Maritime Commission’s (FMC) Supply Chain Innovation Team Initiative, led by Commissioner Rebecca F. Dye, was launched today at FMC headquarters in Washington, D.C. Over the next two-days, industry leaders from 34 companies will be working in teams with the goal of developing process innovations to improve the reliability, resilience and competitiveness of America’s global supply chain. “The innovation team approach focuses on obstacles to the smooth flow of cargo in our $980 billion annual export and import containerized trade,” Dye said.

Commissioner Dye Joins the Federal Maritime Commission

The Federal Maritime Commission announced that Commissioner Rebecca F. Dye has assumed her duties at the Commission. Dye was nominated by President Bush to serve the remainder of a 5-year term expiring June 30, 2005. She was sworn-in by former Chairman and current Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao on December 19, 2002. Dye comes to the Commission with an extensive background in maritime matters. For the past 15 years, she served as a Committee Counsel in the U.S. House of Representatives. Between 1995 and 2002, she served as Counsel to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; from 1987 to 1995, she served as Minority Counsel for the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee.
