J. Lauritzen Buys Cool Carriers
J. Lauritzen bought Cool Carriers AB for $35.4 million from Norwegian shipping group Leif Hoegh & Co. ASA, a step in consolidation of the reefer vessel market. "The acquisition will be financed through a capital injection of 215 million crowns ($25.5 million) from the parent company J. Lauritzen Holding," it said. Reefer vessels are equipped with refrigeration facilities to transport perishable foodstuffs. The takeover of the Swedish-based group, effective January 1, 2001, would create the world's leading specialized reefer vessel operator in a new company to be named Lauritzen Cool AB, it said. "With the establishment of Lauritzen Cool the first step towards the long sought-for consolidation of the global reefer market has now been taken," it said.
Leif Höegh & Co. Sells Four Reefer Vessels
Leif Höegh & Co. ASA (LHC) has sold four "Crystal" class reefer vessels to Reederei F. Laeisz (2 vessels) and Thien & Heyenga GmbH on private terms. The "Crystal" vessels are built in 1992 and have a cargo capacity of 375 000 cbft. Delivery to the new owners will take place during the third quarter. The sale of these last wholly owned reefer vessels is concluded in accordance with the company's strategy to exit the reefer segment. After the sale LHC owns 36% of two reefers.
Samskip Completes Reefer Acquisition
Silver Green AS, owned 50% by Samskip, is changing its name to Silver Sea AS to mark the finalization of a series of ownership changes. The new name reflects a consolidation by Samskip of its position in the reefer vessel segment, including the strengthening its ownership in the company and direct investment in reefer vessels. Silver Green AS, based in Bergen, Norway, operates a fleet of 14 reefer vessels. The company is a market leader within its segment, with its primary trading being in the North Atlantic, Baltic, North Sea and Black Sea. Samskip Logistics now owns five reefer vessels.
Two New Reefer Vessels for Eimskip
Eimskip has entered into shipbuilding contracts for the construction of two reefer vessels. The investment is supporting the company strategy to be a supplier of quality services in the North Atlantic. This is a part of a renewal for the fleet and making Eimskip able to transport in an efficient and secure way. With this new fleet structure Eimskip is will be able to enter into more diversified transportation services, serving temperature controlled commodities such as meat, vegetables, fruits etc. The new ships will contribute to the extensive transport network in the North Atlantic Ocean of Eimskip and Eimskip-CTG, its subsidiary in Norway. The company received one reefer vessel last year and will within one year receive three vessels ordered in 2004 and 2005.
Friend of the Sea Turns to BMT for Reefer Vessels Certification
BMT Surveys (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group, the international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has been engaged by Friend of the Sea to investigate whether specialized reefer vessels comply with the broad set of requirements to qualify for certification. A nonprofit and nongovernmental organization (NGO), the primary goal of Friend of the Sea is protection and conservation of a sound, sustainable and eco-friendly marine habitat in the oceans of the world. To help deliver its mission, the NGO introduced a certification project, the Friend of the Sea eco-label, for companies that demonstrably operate sustainably and eco-friendly in the worldwide fishing sector including cargo vessels.
LCL Expands into Egypt
Lauritzen Cool Logistics (LCL) the logistics subsidiary of reefer vessel owner and operator NYKLauritzenCool, provides customized multi-modal and multi-destination door-to-door logistic services for perishables and reefer cargo. After establishing in major producing and consuming areas such as Latin America, South Africa, North Europe and the USA, LCL started its expansion in the Mediterranean region in January 2005 by opening LCL Iberia in Valencia.
Seatrade Starts S. Africa Service
Seatrade started a fixed scheduled weekly reefer service between Rotterdam and Cape Town. Once in April the season for citrus starts, Seatrade wants to add a call in Durban. Northbound the five conventional reefer vessels can each carry hundred 40"containers as well.
World Trade in Perishable Cargo to Grow
The Drewry Shipping Consultants, latest Annual Report indicates that world trade in perishable Reefer cargo is forecast to grow to 215 million tons by 2015 of which 109 million will be seaborne. The bulk of seaborne trade will be carried by container Reefer vessels. That is partially because there is limited, and reducing, specialized reefer fleet capacity. The report indicates that rationalization has continued over the last year amongst Reefer fleets with some notable companies leaving the specialized sector. Clearly there is a capacity problem for specialized vessels whereas Reefer containers have a real business opportunity if the former cannot bridge the capacity gap. By mid-2008, the container Reefer fleet boasted more than 4,500 vessels providing 11.4 million teu.
Leif Hoegh Profits Double
Norwegian shipping group Leif Hoegh said its improvement in operating profit - from $56.6 million from $22.9 million the previous year - was largely a result of investments in Hoegh Ugland Auto Liners (HUAL) and contract shipping in the form of gas and dry bulk and reefer vessels. "LHC expects global growth in 2001, which at the outset will dampen the demand growth in several segments in which LHC is involved," it said.
Siem Renews Contract for Seven Reefers
Norwegian liner Siem Shipping Inc. has won a one-year contract renewal for a regular weekly service from Ecuador to St. Petersburg, Russia. The contract extension for the service covers seven reefer vessels. The service, which employs seven vessel, is largely for banana trades and has been renewed for an additional year. The company did not, however, disclose any further details on the value of the contracts or expected start date. Star Reefers has been operating between Ecuador and Saint Petersburg for years and recently introduced an interim stop in Vlissingen, Netherlands.
Eimskip Adds Refeer to Fleet
Eimskip-CTG in Norway, has received its third newbuilt refeer vessel in 18 months. The vessel is built at Myklebust Verft AS in Norway. The new reefer vessel is a combined reefer and container vessel. It is 269 x 52.4 ft., with maximum cruising speed of 16 nautical miles per hour, and a deadweight of 2,500 tons. It has substantial loading and discharging capacity, about 200 tons per hour and is able to carry 1,800 pallets and 28, 40-ft. containers on deck. The vessel has side ports, which enables driving pallets directly onboard instead of having to hoist them using a crane.
Reefer Shipping Continues to Thrive
Despite reports stating that the specialist reefer industry continues to lose market share to the reefer container operators, cargo volumes are increasing overall and as a result the specialist reefer carriers are not suffering a reduction in cargo volume. Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd., leading maritime consultants, has released its latest Reefer report “Annual Reefer Shipping Market Review and Forecast 2007/08”. The report outlines how world reefer trade has grown from 84.6 million tonnes in 1995 to 132.7 million tonnes in 2005, a compound annual growth (CAGR) of 4.6 per cent. Based on current economic forecasts, reefer trade should show strong growth with world trade in perishables set to increase to 199.5 million tonnes in 2015.
Lapponian Reefer Docks at A&P Falmouth
The Cayman Islands reefer vessel, Lapponian Reefer, has recently completed a nine day dry docking program where it underwent an extensive 10 year survey and repair work. The 11,095dwt vessel, owned by Holy House Shipping, dry docked on January 7, 2002 for works which included repairs of internal tank fractures, survey and repairs of sea valves, overhaul of the main engine, survey bearings and turbo charger overhaul. The gearbox was also opened and surveyed and the propeller blades were removed and surveyed. Other works included the removal and renewal of approximately 2,297 ft. of pipelines on the main decks, repairs of the main deck cranes and renewal of the hydraulics for the free-fall lifeboat.
Keppel Cebu Fixes to Reefers
Philippines’ Keppel Cebu shipyard, part of Singapore’s Keppel Offshore & Marine, has repaired two reefer vessels – the first was the 7,212 grt Uranus, shipmanaged by London Ship Managers, London. The vessel arrived in the yard for her scheduled drydocking and repairs under Lloyds Register (LR) Class. Major work included the removal of the goose neck, building-up pins and fabricated spare gooseneck heel pins, renewal of lifeboat davit pins, servicing and renewal seal of the anchor windlass, renewal of the outboard seal and bonding of inboard seal, partial renewal of keel plate and installed gear box doublers at mooring and windlass, polishing and building-up propeller blades, nitrogen pressure testing on refrigerating lines.

Reefer market dynamics continue to change. Drewry Maritime Research have just published their latest Reefer Shipping Market Annual Review and Forecast 2011/12, analysing the industries make-up including; leading operators’ profiles and fleets, perishable commodities, specialised reefer and freezer fleet capacity, containerised reefer vessels, ship economics and forecasts for the future. Analysts Expect Rise in Reefer Capacity
Though specialized reefer fleet is shrinking and shows no signs of reversing in the future, the reefer containership fleet has increased by 15 percent year-on-year and is set to grow 20 percent by 2018, according to maritime research and consulting services provider Drewry’s latest Reefer Shipping Market Annual Review & Forecast. Consequently, with a capacity restricted specialized fleet, there is no alternative but for cargo to be shipped by reefer containership, a trend Drewry says is accelerating with continued cargo growth.

A & P Falmouth Has Good Outlook With Reefer Market
The reefer market has proved successful for A&P Falmouth throughout recent months with a total of six bookings for reefer ships from two separate owners. Falmouth is ideally located for the reefer trades on the ballast route from Northern Europe to loading ports in South Africa, Canary Islands and the Caribbean. Amer Shipping's 13,312 grt vessel the Amer Choapa was the first to enter the shipyard during July. Work completed during the 9 day docking included blasting and painting, steelwork repairs, hatch cover repairs, main engine survey and overhauls to the rudder and tailshaft. Following the successful completion of the Amer Choapa, the 9,070 grt Amer Whitney arrived during early August for similar works covering a 10-day period.
