Everett, Wash. repair yard Everett Ship Repair said it recently completed hull repairs and upgrades of the MV Excellence, a steel-hulled mothership processing vessel built in the 1970s in Japan. The vessel, measuring 367.5 feet in length and 56 feet in width, is undergoing extensive upgrades to the onboard ammonia-based refrigeration system. The modernization of this system will provide additional refrigeration capacity to the vessel, without an increase in power demand.The new refrigeration equipment was installed in a large opening cut below the waterline, necessitating drydocking.

German manufacturer GEA has developed a new, transcritical CO2 technology especially for use on seagoing vessels.GEA signed a contract last year with P&O Cruises, part of Carnival Corporation & PLC, the world's largest commercial cruise ship operator, for its new transcritical CO2 refrigeration technology.The environmentally friendly refrigeration technology has already been installed on board the Arcadia, a 2,000-passenger ship from P&O Cruises, where it provides energy-efficient refrigeration for all the ship's food and beverage refrigeration systems.Further orders for its transcritical CO2 refrigeration technology have now been received by GEA for two new cruise ships to be built in China and for a Dutch fishing trawler…

ALMACO said it has been contracted to build the catering areas onboard the first newbuild ship for Saga Cruises at Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. The vessel is expected to be delivered in summer of 2019, with the option to order a second with expected delivery in 2021. German shipyard Meyer Werft has awarded ALMACO Group the newbuilding contract for provision stores and fast thawing chambers for the next ship generation of AIDA Cruises, which are expected to be delivered end of 2018 and 2021. ALMACO’s scope of work involves a total of 2,600 square meters of provision stores, as well as nine fast thawing chambers (FTC). The FTC is an ALMACO-engineered system that supports a much faster thawing period on less thawing surface, providing a thawing capacity of 750 kg for each room for 12 hours, therefore allowing for 6,750 kg in thawing capacity per 24 hours. ALMACO has delivered FTCs in previous AIDA Cruises newbuilds, AIDAprima and AIDAperla.

A 260-foot fully operational paddle wheel riverboat, recently used as a large casino, is available for sale by negotiation. Asset management company Stuart B. Millner & Associates (SBMA) said it is currently accepting offers for the vessel before making plans to sell it through an auction in March. Dometic Marine, a division of Dometic Group, will launch a range of new equipment, including products reported to be the first of their kind for the marine industry, at this year’s International Workboat Show, December 3-5 in New Orleans. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today announced the approval of a $324.6 million Title XI loan guarantee to TOTE Shipholdings, Inc., to finance the construction of two container ships that will utilize liquefied natural gas (LNG) as propulsion fuel. Alaska Marine Lines, a Lynden company providing marine transportation to and from Alaska, is continuing its efforts to work lean and green by purchasing 200 of the most energy efficient refrigerated units in the world. The Star Cool "reefers" achieve the industry's lowest energy consumption by matching the compressor speed to the required heat load of the container rather than running at a single constant speed. In addition, the box and refrigeration equipment are built as one unit with an insulation system designed to minimize energy loss.

Faster container import growth forecasted for remainer of 2012 in Journal of Commerce/PIERS market survey. U.S. containerized imports surged 9.7 percent in July from a year earlier, to 1,562,235 twenty-foot-equivalent units, on strong growth in auto parts and furniture. The growth — imports also advanced 6.2 percent over June — marks impressive expansion of the import trade, especially considering last July's year-over-year drop of 5.2 percent, said Mario O. Moreno, economist for The Journal of Commerce/PIERS. Year to date, U.S. containerized imports were up 3.5 percent. Import growth will continue to accelerate during the second half of 2012, said Moreno, who expects full-year growth of 4.6 percent for imports and 2.3 percent for exports.

The world's marine insurers collectively lost $3 billion in 1999, Norway's Central Union of Marine Underwriters (CEFOR) said. Cefor's calculation uses the collective experience of marine insurers in Norway - one of the world's major marine insurance markets - and extrapolates the results to the global industry. Cefor's md said that not even in their previous worst case estimates did CEFOR anticipate anything like this. The principal reason for the losses is continuing reduction in insurance premium rates, said Formso. On CEFOR's current estimates, rates in 2000 have dropped to 31 per cent of their 1994 levels.
