The Coast Guard announced Tuesday that it finalized its Major Incident Investigation (MII) Report into the July 2016 death of a Coast Guard recruit at Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) Cape May, N.J. Seaman Recruit Aaron Redd died July 7, 2016, after collapsing at the training center during an initial fitness assessment run with his recruit company. In its summary findings, the MII board found that Redd’s death was the result of a heat-related illness exacerbated by an underlying medical condition. The condition is not disqualifying from the military. While the MII board also found that the Coast Guard followed established policy, TRACEN Cape May strengthened practices and procedures with regard to in-processing recruits to improve safety for all.

A U.S. Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a 34-year-old man from a 600-foot bulk carrier 10 miles offshore in the Brownsville Anchorage, off South Padre Island, Texas on Monday morning. At approximately 9 p.m. Sunday, the vessel shipping agent contacted Sector Corpus Christi watchstanders and reported a crewmember on the Global Andes was experiencing symptoms from a preexisting heart condition. The ship's captain requested a Coast Guard medevac upon arrival to the Brownsville Anchorage the next morning because the ship was still 130 miles at sea.

An injured fisherman was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard on Friday 62 miles east of Cape May, N.J. A crew member from the fishing vessel Stacy Lee called Coast Guard watchstanders at approximately 12:45 a.m. to request assistance for a crew member who suffered a leg injury. A Coast Guard helicopter arrived on scene and hoisted the man at approximately 2:40 a.m., and transferred him to EMS personnel at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, N.J. “The crew of the fishing boat did a good job administrating first aid to the survivor…

A Coast Guard boat crew medevaced a man off Cape May, Tuesday. Command center watchstanders from the 5th Coast Guard District received notification at 1:42 p.m. Monday that a 46-year-old crew member of the 600-foot French-flagged motor vessel Tamarin, had suffered a possible stroke. Due to inclement weather, the rescue was postponed until the morning. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May launched Tuesday at 10 a.m. and arrived on scene at 10:46 a.m. The man was transported to Cape May where EMS personnel were waiting. The man was then transported in stable condition to Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House by EMS personnel for further medical attention.

The U.S. Coast Guard, the Alpena Sheriff's Department and several good Samaritans are assisting two men aboard a 42-foot sailboat that began taking on water early Wednesday morning 18 miles east of Alpena, Michigan in Lake Huron. Shortly after 9 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, received a call from two men aboard a 42-foot sailboat stating their vessel was taking on water approximately 18 nautical miles east of Alpena in Lake Huron. The men stated they were currently using a hand pump to dewater the vessel.

An F/A-18C "Hornet" from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106, the "Gladiators," caught fire on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) last night while parked forward of the island during refueling. The fire was immediately extinguished by the ship's flight deck firefighting team. The pilot of the aircraft ejected and landed on the flight deck. The pilot received medical treatment by the ship's medical department before being transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, North Carolina, for further treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A Sailor assigned to the ship also sustained non-life threatening injuries from the incident and was also transported to the same location for treatment.

The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced a 67-year-old woman Thursday from a cruise ship approximately 75 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey. A medical doctor aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at 7:53 p.m. to report the woman was in need of immediate medical assistance. After consulting with the flight surgeon, the woman was recommended for medical evacuation. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City arrived at the Norwegian Breakaway at 9:27 p.m.…

US Coastguard Corpus Christi inform that a rescue helicopter has medevaced the crewmember of a container ship approximately 40 miles offshore of South Padre Island. The Coast Guard's 8th District watchstanders notified the Sector Corpus Christi Command Center at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, that a 24-year-old foreign male crewmember aboard the 892-foot container ship Monte Azul, was experiencing symptoms of appendicitis and requested to be taken off of the ship for treatment. The ship was originally beyond the range of responding helicopters. The watchstanders at the 8th District watchstanders requested the ship head toward South Padre Island and arranged a rendezvous location 40 miles offshore with the ship’s captain.

The Coast Guard medevaced a 64-year-old man yesterday from a cruise ship approximately 160 miles east off Cape Lookout, North Carolina. Crewmembers aboard the Carnival Splendor, a 950-foot cruise ship, contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday, notifying them a man was experiencing chest pains and in need of medical attention aboard the ship approximately 450 miles southeast of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Fifth District watchstanders contacted the Carnival Splendor, requesting the ship alter course toward North Carolina, and they agreed to conduct the medevac Tuesday morning when the Carnival Splendor would be close enough for a Coast Guard helicopter to respond. At approximately 5 a.m. Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to assist.

The Coast Guard medevaced a 27-year-old crewmember Saturday from a fishing boat approximately 40 miles east of Chincoteague, Virginia Coast. The master of the fishing boat Kirsten Lee contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders at 11:15 a.m. Saturday stating a crewmember was suffering from chest pain and needed medical attention. Sector watchstanders launched a crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to assist. The helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 1:40 p.m. hoisted the man and took him Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland. USCG

A Coast Guard helicopter airlifted a 25-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from the 'Carnival Splendor', and the same day lifted a 36-year-old passenger from the 'Carnival Dream'. The Coast Guard informs that the cruise ship was approximately 135 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina when it requested medical help. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, hoisted two patients into the helicopter and took them to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, where they were reported to be in stable condition. The U.S. Coast Guard announced it medevaced a 49-year-old man at approximately 8 a.m. Monday from a fishing boat about 50 miles offshore from Lewes, Del. A crewmember aboard the fishing vessel Mary Elizabeth alerted Coast Guard watchstanders of an ailing crewmember who was in need of immediate medical attention. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City hoisted the man and took him to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where his care was transferred to hospital personnel.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said it medevaced a 66-year-old man Wednesday from a cruise ship approximately 50 miles east of Wilmington, N.C. after receiving reports that the man was in medical distress. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported that it rescued a 55-year-old man Saturday, who was suffering from chest pains while out on a charter boat approximately 22 miles northeast of Port Mansfield, Texas. According to the USCG report, at approximately 11:20 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Station South Padre Island received a VHF radio call from the captain of the 55-foot charter boat, the Osprey II, requesting assistance. The captain stated that there was a gentleman aboard who was suffering from chest pains and he was going in and out of consciousness.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it medevaced an injured cruise ship passenger off the coast of Toms River, N.J. Thursday after watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia received notification from the cruise ship Carnival Splendor of an 84-year-old Canadian female who fell, injured her hip, and was in need of medical attention. A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City arrived on scene, hoisted the woman and transferred her to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. “This case is a great example of how Coast Guard training has a real-world impact,” said Lt.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a 50-year-old woman this afternoon who was reportedly suffering acute abdominal pains while aboard a fishing vessel about 60 miles east of Ocean City, Md. The Coast Guard was contacted by the master of the Ink Mist, a 48-foot sportfishing vessel, and was notified that one of the three people aboard, Bernedette Walser of Villas, N.J., was suffering from the ailment. The Coast Guard directed the launch of a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Ocean City and an HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City. Once on scene, the rescue helicopter crew lowered their aviation survival technician, or rescue swimmer, to the deck of the Ink Mist.
