Damen Delivers First Argentinian-Owned Tug

First Argentinian-owned Damen ASD 2810 tug arrives in Buenos Aires. Argentinian towage and harbour company Remolcadores Unidos Argentinos (RUA) has just taken delivery of the ‘RUA Cap. Lucio R’, a Damen ASD 2810 tug. Although Damen’s tugs have operated in Argentina before, this vessel is the first time a Damen tug is owned by an Argentinian company. Established in 1967 and based in Buenos Aires, RUA has a seven-strong fleet of vessels with a smaller bollard pull than the ASD 2810 newbuild.

Damen Shipyards Group Adapts Swiftly to New Argentinian Import Regulations

Damen Shipyards, which has already built up a considerable presence in Argentina since the nineties, is working very closely with Argentinian shipyards and looking forward to expanding its activities in the country. Currently, several Damen ASD tugs are being built in Argentina and very soon work will begin on an entirely new powerful pusher to serve the Hidrovía Paraná-Paraguay, the greatest waterway of South America. Between 1994 and 1999, Damen delivered more than 40 of its well-known AluCats to the Prefectura Naval Argentina, as well as several Stan Tenders.

MAN B&W Power for Repasa’s Terminal Tugs

MAN B&W Diesel A/S, Denmark, has been awarded the contract to supply two medium-speed L27/38 twin engine packages for two escort and terminal handling tugs. The newbuildings are under construction at the Spanish shipyard of Astilleros Balenciaga SA., Zumaia, for the Port of Tarragona-based Remolcadores de Puerto y Altura SA. (REPASA) fleet. The vessels (hull Nos. 392 and 393), named Romulo and Remo, are scheduled to be delivered during 2005 with a three month interval. The first tug’s sea trail runs are scheduled to finish in February. Due to the operational requirements, a highly efficient and powerful propulsion concept was choosen for the tugs. Main engine torque and power is converted into pulling power and maneuverability via two sets of Steerprop SP 35 azimuthing propellers.

Panama Canal New Locks Announcement

Reporters crowded around Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta after the ACP announced Grupo Unidos por el Canal as the “best value” consortium to design and build the Canal’s new set of locks July 8. Grupo Unidos por el Canal, composed of Sacyr Vallehermoso S.A., Impregilo S.p.A., Jan De Nul n.v. and Constructora Urbana, S.A., was one of three consortia vying for the contract and determined the winner through a fair, rigorous and transparent process put into place by the ACP.

Panama Canal Awards Locks Contract

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that Consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal will design and build the waterway's new set of locks, the most anticipated project of the Panama Canal Expansion Program. Grupo Unidos por el Canal, composed of Sacyr Vallehermoso S.A., Impregilo S.p.A., Jan De Nul n.v. and Constructora Urbana, S.A., was one of three world-renowned consortia vying for the largest and most important contract under the Canal's expansion. The ACP revealed that Grupo Unidos por el Canal submitted the "best value" proposal for the new set of locks contract during a public event held Wednesday, July 8. The event, broadcast live on Panamanian television and the ACP Web site, was attended by Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli and many high-ranking government officials.

ACP Announces “Best Value”

After months of technical review, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has determined the “best value” proposal for the new locks expansion contract. Consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal – composed of Sacyr Vallehermoso S.A., Impregilo S.p.A., Jan De Nul n.v. and Constructora Urbana, S.A. – garnered the highest total points for its combined technical and price scores. Three consortia competed to win the largest and most important contract under the Canal’s Expansion Program. In a public ceremony, the ACP first presented the scores obtained from the technical evaluations and opened the price proposals submitted by all three consortia. Caterpillar Secures Complete Propulsion Systems Order

Caterpillar Marine announced that Cat power and propulsion solutions have been selected to provide an optimized tug package for a 55T ASD tug new build for Remolcadores Marracoi SL (REMARSL). Two Cat 3512C EPA Tier 2 propulsion engines have been selected to power the tug as well as 2x  MTA 523FP Azimuth thrusters. Each Cat 3512C marine propulsion engine will provide 2x1765 kw @1800 rpm of rated power. Auxiliary power will be delivered through 2 x Cat C9 engines. The vessel will be constructed at Freinaval shipyards in Spain. Cat dealer Finanzauto led Caterpillar efforts on the project. Completing the comprehensive Caterpillar efforts on the sale was Cat Financial, who was able to deliver a stellar financial package for the customer.

Strike Call Lifted on Panama Canal Expansion Work

  The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) expressed its satisfaction after the main contractor for the Third Set of Locks Project, Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), and the National Union of Workers of Construction and Similar Industries (SUNTRACS) reached an agreement which supersedes the strike call in the new locks’ construction site in both the Atlantic and the Pacific sides. The ACP expects this agreement marks the continuation of a harmonious relationship between both parties, and thus the completion of the work as it is scheduled, which has now reached 93 percent completion.  

Talks Continue on Panama Canal Locks Project

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said talks will continue with Zurich American and Grupo Unidos por el Canal, S.A. (GUPC) (formed by the companies Sacyr Vallehermoso, S.A (Spain), Impregilo, S.p.A. (Italy), Jan de Nul Group (Belgium) and Constructora Urbana, S.A. (CUSA) (Panama)) until Tuesday, February 4. The parties agreed to continue meeting over the weekend to further evaluate the options aimed at reaching an agreement. Panama Canal Requests Proposals For New Locks Construction

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) released its Request for Proposal (RFP) Friday on the "design-build" contract for the new locks under the Canal's Expansion Program. Four global consortia will now move forward with their bids on what will be the largest and most important project under the $5.25b expansion. The Expansion Program will build a new lane of traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks, doubling capacity and allowing more traffic and longer, wider ships. The ACP will meet with consortia representatives in February 2008 regarding the content of the RFP for the construction of the new set of locks. Proposals are due August 2008.

Sacyr Says Will Deliver Panama Canal expansion on Time

The consortium in charge of the expansion of the Panama Canal, led by Sacyr reported that the fissures presented in the third set of locks will not delay the opening date scheduled for April 2016. The Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), comprising the Sacyr Spanish and Italian Salini Impregilo, informed  Autoridfad Panama Canal (ACP), the authority that manages the waterway, that is repairing the gaps in the walls of the locks caused by lack of steel reinforcement, and ensure other structures preventively.

Steadily moving forward with expansion, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) reached another milestone. Oct. 18, the Canal’s Advisory Board and Board of Directors inspected the physical model of the new set of locks in Lyon, France. Built by Compagnie National du Rhône's (CNR) Hydraulic Laboratory, the functional model used a ship that is 12.2 meters long to perform the lock filling and emptying tests. The new locks will include side basins that reuse 60 percent of the water in every lockage of a vessel. “We have reached a significant phase in the Canal’s Expansion Program.

Four Global Consortia To Bid To Build Panama Canal Locks

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that four global consortia have been selected to bid on the "design-build contract" to create the locks for the Panama Canal expansion. The Expansion Program will build a new lane of traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks, doubling capacity and allowing more traffic and longer, wider ships. In what will be the largest and most important project under the $5.25 billion expansion, the winner of this contract will design and build two locks complexes. Each of the four consortia will be allowed to respond to the ACP's Request for Proposal (RFP), which is expected to be released very soon.

Locks Work to Restart at Panama Canal

The new locks contractor Grupo Unidos por el Canal, S.A. (GUPC) accepted Panama Canal Authority’s (ACP) repeated request and agreed to restart on Thursday, February 20 the construction of the Third Set of Locks project. GUPC is formed by companies Sacyr Vallehermoso, S.A (Spain), Impregilo, S.p.A. (Italy), Jan de Nul Group (Belgium) and Constructora Urbana, S.A. (CUSA) (Panama). As soon as works are resumed, ACP will pay GUPC $36.8 million for December invoices to ensure that GUPC cancels pending payments and obligations to suppliers.

Testing of New Panama Canal Cocoli Locks Successful

The Panama Canal has announced that Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), the consortium responsible for the design and construction of the Third Set of Locks Project, has successfully completed testing of the reinforcements in sill #3 of the Cocolí locks. GUPC technical personnel, the designers and Panama Canal Authority (ACP) specialists monitored the testing process which consisted of gradually raising the water behind the lock gate to the level in which the seepage was first detected in sill #3 last August.

Panama Canal Locks Project Work Resumes

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said that Grupo Unidos por el Canal. S.A. (GUPC) has resumed work on the new locks project during the afternoon of Thursday, February 20. “Works have restarted this afternoon,” said Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano. Since works have resumed, ACP will proceed to pay tomorrow GUPC the $36.8 million due for December invoices. This preliminary agreement to resume works does not imply a negotiation on the alleged cost overruns claimed by the contractor. ACP reiterates that these claims must be process through the mechanisms within the contract.

Panama Canal Sill Reinforcement to Complete in January

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said it has received word from Grupo Unidos por el Canal, S.A. (GUPC), the main contractor for the design and construction of the Third Set of Locks project, that work to reinforce the sills in the new locks will be completed in January 2016. GUPC informed the ACP of the deadline during a meeting Thursday, November 28, to discuss the progress being made on the reinforcements work. As part of its remaining work, GUPC will continue conducting inspections and reinforcements of each individual sill. Afterward, GUPC plans to continue the electromechanical testing on the filling and emptying systems of the new locks. The ACP was also informed by GUPC that they have not yet identified a date for the completion of the new locks project.

Panama Canal’s Third Set of Locks Complete

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) was informed by its contractor Grupo Unidos por el Canal, S.A. (GUPC) on Wednesday, June 1 that the Third Set of Locks have officially passed all performance tests and are now functionally completed to allow a safe, efficient and reliable operation of the new locks in accordance with the provisions of the contract. The ACP said it will conduct a detailed review of the submitted report in order to proceed with appropriate action and respond to the contractor, symbolizing a milestone toward the inauguration of the new lane on June 26.

Parties Agree to Complete Panama Canal Expansion

On August 1, 2014, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and the consortium Groups Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) signed the variation incorporating to the original contract the agreement reached in March for completion of the Third Set of Locks project. "What remains now is to continue working with the commitment to complete the Expansion which is currently at a 78% progress," said ACP Administrator Jorge L. Quijano. The Expansion Program registers an overall progress of 78%, while the new locks project is currently 73% complete.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that a meeting took place on Tuesday, January 28th between ACP, Zurich American and Grupo Unidos por el Canal, S.A. (GUPC) (formed by the companies Sacyr Vallehermoso, S.A (Spain), Impregilo, S.p.A. (Italy), Jan de Nul Group (Belgium) and Constructora Urbana, S.A. (CUSA) (Panama)). The parties agreed to continue the meeting today, to further evaluate options to establish alternatives to reach an agreement.
