Bay Shipbuilding Delivers Self-unloading Barge to VTB

Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding has delivered a newly built self-unloading barge to VanEnkevort Tug & Barge for operation on the Great Lakes.The new barge, named Michigan Trader, measures 740 feet in length, 78 feet in beam, and 45 feet in depth. The barge has a 265-foot unloading boom and capacity for up to 37,000 long tons of cargo.David Groh, president of VanEnkevort Tug & Barge, said Michigan Trader will be the fourth self-unloading barge in the company's Great Lakes fleet. MARAD Awards Nearly $20 Mln for Small Shipyards

Two dozen small shipyards in the U.S. have received a combined $19.6 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) Small Shipyard Grant Program to help fund upgrades and expansions that often lead to more competitive operations, quality ship construction and improved employee skill.“This $19.6 million federal government investment in the nation’s small shipyards will help maintain the U. MARAD Awards More Than $20 Mln to Small US Shipyards

More than $20 million in grant funding has been awarded to support capital improvement projects at 29 small shipyards in 22 states across the U.S.The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) Small Shipyard Grant Program, supports capital improvements that foster increased efficiency and economic growth.“These grants are an investment in our country’s small shipyards and will help create good jobs for America’s workers,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L.

Twice a U.S. Senate confirmed Presidential appointee to the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), Doyle has, over the course of a long and celebrated career, worn many prestigious hats. Prior to his FMC appointment, Mr. Doyle served on cabinet and executive level boards and committees under both the Obama and George W. Bush Administrations. Before that, he served as an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine as a U.S. Coast Guard licensed marine engineer aboard numerous classes of vessels.

Ultra Large Tug Alp Striker Delivered

From Japan's Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair, Inc. (NSR), fully owned by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., comes the first in four of a series of ultra large, ultra powerful tugs. The first in line is dubbed Alp Striker,  delivered to Alp Striker BV (ship owning company of ALP Maritime Services BV, Netherlands ) in early September 2016. Alp Striker is one of strongest and largest towing vessels in the world, able to sail to a top speed of 19.16 knots, 13 knots in ordinal sailing and to tow 309.6 tons.

J.F. Lehman Sells Northeast Ship Repair

J.F. Lehman & Company, a middle-market private equity firm focused on the maritime, defense and aerospace sectors, announced today that it has sold its portfolio company, Northeast Ship Repair, Inc. to affiliates of Plexus Capital and NewSpring Capital. The sale of Northeast Ship Repair follows J.F. Lehman's recent sales of ACR Electronics and Drew Marine, both announced on November 19. Northeast Ship Repair is a provider of large vessel maintenance, repair and overhaul services for the U.S. Government noncombatant fleet and commercial customers.

BAE Systems Awarded 'USS Benfold' Repair Contract

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair Inc., San Diego, Calif., has been awarded a $38,601,943 modification to previously awarded cost-plus-award-fee contract for work on DDG 65. The contract is for the definitization of the USS Benfol (DDG 65) fiscal 2013 extended selected restricted availability Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif.,and is expected to be completed by August 2014. Fiscal 2013 Operation and Maintenance and Other Procurement, Navy funding in the amount of $38,601,943 will be obligated at time of award.  Contract funds in the amount of $11,788,829 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.  The Southwest Regional Maintenance Center, San Diego, Calif., is the contracting activity.

BAE Get 'USS Gridley' Finance Top-up

US Department of Defense Navy contract awards BAE  additional funding for the DDG-101 repair & maintenance docking. BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, Inc., San Diego, Calif., is being awarded an $8,970,338 modification to previously awarded cost-plus-award-fee contract (N00024-11-C-4408) to definitize the USS Gridley (DDG-101) fiscal 2013 selected restricted availability. DofD explain that a selected restricted availability includes the planning and execution of depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications that will update and improve the ship's military and technical capabilities. This modification includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $9,233,934. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by Oct. 9, 2013.

Navy Awards BAE Funding for USS Russell Dry-Docking

Amongst the latest Department of Defense, Navy, contracts, BAE gains contract modification for work on warship DDG 59's extended drydocking. BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair Inc., San Diego, Calif., was awarded May 24, 2013, a $49,796,139 modification to previously awarded cost-plus-award-fee contract (N00024-11-C-4408) to definitize the USS Russell (DDG 59) fiscal 2013 extended dry-docking selected restricted availability. In explanation DofD adds that an extended dry-docking selected restricted availability includes the planning and execution of depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications that will update and improve the ship's military and technical capabilities. This modification includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $50,258,933.

Great Lakes Shipyard Appoints Three Managers

Great Lakes Shipyard recently appointed three management positions because of continued Shipyard expansion. Paul W. Deterding has been appointed as Vice President & General Manager. Formerly the General Manager at Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair Inc. LLC, Deterding brings over 25 years of experience in the marine, electrical and fire protection industries, mostly in the roles of Business Development and Team Leadership. David Dudley has been appointed as Shipyard Foreman - New Construction & Repair. Dudley previously worked for International Ship Repair & Marine Service Inc. as Ship Superintendent. MarAd Approves $210.9M in Title XI Loan Guarantees

The Maritime Administration today announced the approval of a $210.9 million Title XI loan guarantee supporting the recent construction of two articulated tug-barge units that are currently in service on Delaware Bay.   Construction of the barge units involved five American shipyards, including Bender Shipbuilding & Repair, Inc., in Mobile, Alabama, and Tampa, Florida; VT Halter Marine; Atlantic Marine; Tampa Ship; and International Ship Repair.  The federal loan guarantee is for OSG Delaware Lightering, LLC, a subsidiary of Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc.  MARAD’s Title XI program promotes the growth and modernization of America’s merchant marine industry while enabling owners of eligible vessels or eligible shipyards to obtain suitable long-term financing.

BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Inc., Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $15,974,662 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-11-C-2314) to exercise options for the USS Gravely (DDG 107) post shakedown availability. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., and is expected to be completed by September 2011. Contract funds in the amount of $3,194,932 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

70 Shipyards Awarded ARRA Grants

The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. A detailed list of the grantees is as follows. •    Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc.,  Philadelphia, PA: $2,312,614, for the first year of training program.

United Defense to Acquire United States Marine Repair

United Defense Industries announced that it has agreed to acquire closely held United States Marine Repair, Inc., a provider of non-nuclear ship repair, modernization, overhaul and conversion services to the United States Navy, for $316 million. Based in Norfolk, Va., United States Marine Repair serves defense and commercial customers at six strategically located ship repair operations in the major ports of Norfolk, Va.; San Diego, San Francisco and San Pedro, Calif.; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and Ingleside, Texas. In addition to the company's primary customer, the U.S. Navy, its current customers include the Military Sealift Command, the U.S. Army, the Maritime Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard, and commercial cruise lines such as Holland-America and Royal Caribbean.

USMR Files Registration Statement For Initial Public Offering

Wärtsilä Power for Long-distance Towage

Wärtsilä won a contract to provide propulsion plants for a pair of deep-sea tugs being built by Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair, Inc in Japan for the Rotterdam-based towage contractor Fairmount Marine BV. The 246 ft. long tugs will each be powered by a complete Wärtsilä propulsion system, comprising Wärtsilä engines, Wärtsilä gearboxes, Lips controllable pitch propellers, Lips high efficiency nozzles and a Lipstronic integrated control and manoeuvring system. The four Wärtsilä 6L32 diesel engines in each tug deliver a combined maximum output of 12,000 kW at 750 rpm. The engines are connected to a pair of twin-in/single-out gearboxes with a secondary driven 1,200 kW power take-off for electricity generation at sea.

Products

U.K.-based EJ Bowman has manufactured its range of marine heat exchangers and oil since 1919. The company recently had its range of hydraulic EC to PK shell and tube oil coolers design approved for marine use by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and now hold certificate no. 02-LD302798-PDA. Bowman heat exchangers and oil coolers are suitable for use on engines up to 1,400 kW (1,880 hp) and for gear boxes up to 1,800 kW (2,400 hp). As a result of this design approval EJ Bowman are exhibiting at the Workboat Show in New Orleans in December 2003. Guests at Universal Orlando theme parks benefit from complimentary, on-site transportation to and from its resort hotels and theme park attractions.

HSR Completes Rig Upgrades for Global Marine

The Offshore Division of Houston Ship Repair, Inc. (HSR) has recently completed two major rig upgrades for Global Marine Drilling Company. HSR was selected as the primary contractor for the re-powering and mud system enhancement stages of the Glomar Baltic I upgrade project. The Marathon LeTourneau Super 300 jackup drilling rig was re-powered with five Caterpillar type 3516 TA V, 1,305 kW diesel generator sets, replacing the three existing EMD diesel engine driven 1,400 kW generators. HSR was also contracted to replace the two existing National 12-P-160 mud pumps with three National 14-P-220 mud pumps. HSR removed the existing generator and mud pump units…

New Navy Contract

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, Inc., San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $9,064,075 modification to previously-awarded contract (N00024-08-C-2300) to exercise an option for the accomplishment of the Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) of the USS Stockdale (DDG 106). Specific efforts include:  engineering and management in support of the PSA, labor and procurement of material to correct government responsible deficiencies and accomplis h system upgrades, performance of specified PSA work items inclusive of tests and post repair sea trials, additional manhours, and material in order to complete emergent repairs. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by Jan. 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
