Forhaug Steps in as CEO at MMT

Marine surveying company MMT has appointed Peter Forhaug as acting CEO from January 1, 2018 while the Sweden based firm conducts its search for a permanent CEO.   Forhaug has a background in finance and has acted as a senior advisor to the board of MMT and is representing MMT at the board of the SMaRC research project.   MMT founder Ola Oskarsson will serve as vice president to assist Forhaug.

Philippines' Duterte Green Lights China's Sea Research

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte personally made a decision to let China conduct scientific research off the Philippines’ Pacific coast, his spokesman said on Monday, despite concern among critics about threats to maritime sovereignty. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said that as chief architect of foreign policy, Duterte allowed China to work with the University of the Philippines in Benham Rise, an area roughly the size of Greece and believed by some scientists to be rich in biodiversity and tuna.

Wärtsilä Joint Diesel Research Project Completed

Multinational team led by Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel completed the major Hercules cooperative research project into the technology necessary for higher-efficiency engines with ultra-low emissions for ships. A team of more than 40 European engine component suppliers, equipment manufacturers, universities, research institutions and shipping companies, led by the major diesel engine groups MAN Diesel SE and Wärtsilä Corporation, has successfully completed the major 43-month cooperative research project under the name HERCULES (High Efficiency R&D on Combustion with Ultra-Low Emissions for Ships) with a budget of EUR 33 million, partly funded by the European Union (EUR 15 million) and the Swiss Federal Government (EUR 2.5 million).

Public workshop on SAFEDOR

The maritime research project SAFEDOR has made considerable progress within the first year of its four year term. A one-day public workshop in London at IMO on 14 February 2006 jointly organized with the Royal Institution of Naval Architects will highlight some of the findings. The European Commission-supported, risk-based ship design research project launched a year ago, has successfully completed its first year of intensive research activities. This provides the SSC a greater opportunity for obtaining funding in support of your research proposals. Experts from the maritime industry met on the M/S Pearl Seaways from January 28-30 for the e-Navigation Underway 2014 international conference. One topic of the talks and discussions was unmanned shipping, which Fraunhofer CML is examining and advancing as part of the research project MUNIN (Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks). e-navigation – in other words the collection, analysis and exchange of maritime information both on land and at sea – was the main subject of talk on the M/S Pearl Seaways and discussed by the maritime experts on various levels.

Lloyd's Register Boxes Clever

A major research project by Lloyd’s Register (LR) has discovered a means to improve the way containers are handled and carried. Containership owners and managers are forever seeking sleeker and more streamlined ways to load, stack and carry their boxes as vessel sizes continue to expand and economies of scale to match them accordingly. The results of this new research project by LR means that in future, ultra-large container ships (ULCS) using the new method could potentially load up to 19% more cargo weight.

NSRP Executive Board Selects New R&D Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise (NSRP ASE) has announced the selection of eleven new research projects as part of the Navy/Industry co-funded portfolio specifically designed to save taxpayers money in Navy shipbuilding and ship repair. The projects -- valued at approximately $32 million, including industry cost share -- were in response to the latest NSRP solicitation released in August.

Canada's RDC Invests in Harsh Environment Ocean R&D

Canada's Research & Development Corporation (RDC) says it is investing $2.4 million in 11 research and development (R&D) projects that capitalize on Newfoundland and Labrador's proximity to a harsh, ocean environment. The total value of the research projects is more than $7.9 million, including investments from the private sector and federal funding agencies. The projects range from new technology that protects oil and gas infrastructure on the seafloor to innovations that enhance night-time maritime surveillance from the air.

ABB to Fund Worldwide Research Projects

ABB to fund 40 research projects at universities worldwide that will shape the future of power and automation. The ABB Research Grant program is intended to support promising graduate students and senior researchers who are researching projects with industrial applications in the power and automation area. The 40 projects were chosen from more than 500 proposals submitted by more than 250 universities in 46 countries. “We were delighted with the level of interest and very impressed by the quality of proposals submitted. Our aim is to establish a truly collaborative innovation environment with leading research institutes around the world,” said ABB Chief Technology Officer, Prith Banerjee.

KR, Panama Maritime Authority Form Research Partnership

The Korean Register (KR) – an IACS member classification society – has signed an MoU with the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) to allow cooperation on technical research and to work together on a range of international activities. The MoU is specifically aimed at owners with Panamanian flagged vessels and will bring them a range of benefits including enhanced survey and certification services. In addition, both parties have agreed to cooperate on future technical and research projects and to exchange technical information as well as manpower.  

ClassNK Joins SOx Scrubber Research

Leading class society ClassNK has announced that it will participate in a new joint development project to install and verify the effectiveness of new Sulfur Oxide (SOx) scrubber technology onboard a Pure Car Carrier (PCC) being carried out by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K-Line), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha, Ltd, (MKK), and Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU). This new joint research project is being implemented as part of K-Line’s new Drive Green Project, which aims to protect the environment and reduce CO2 emissions through the use of new maritime technology. Joint Project Studies Condition-based Engine Monitoring

Classification society ClassNK announced that it will participate in a joint project together with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. ClassNK will support research into the development of condition-based engine monitoring systems for the Mitsui MAN B&W engine. The developed systems will assist in the early detection of abnormalities in electronically-controlled diesel engines in ships. LR Joins Collision Avoidance Research for Autonomous Ships

LR is participating in the MAXCMAS project, a £1.27million collaborative research project that aims to investigate, develop and implement real-time collision avoidance algorithms for autonomous maritime vessels. The MAXCMAS project aims to develop COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972) compliant collision avoidance navigation for autonomous ships and other Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). Compliance with current and future regulations is instrumental to the wide-scale use of USVs at sea.

BMT Partakes in Low-Carbon Research Project

BMT Group is involved in a three-year research project called “Low Carbon Shipping: A Systems Approach.” The project is aimed at limiting the environmental impact of carbon emissions from the world’s shipping systems to comply with new legislation and mitigate global warming. 90% of goods arrive in the UK by ship and current estimates show shipping’s share of global emissions could increase to 20-30% by 2050. The project has received nearly $2.8 million from the Research Councils UK (RCUK) Energy Program, part of the nearly $869 million the program is investing in research in low-carbon technologies. BMT has been charged to develop technologies for low carbon shipping and more energy-efficient ship operations.

ABS to Direct Maritime Cybersecurity Research

ABS, a provider of classification and technical services to the global marine and offshore industries, said it has been awarded a research contract by the Maritime Security Center (MSC) – a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Excellence, led by Stevens Institute of Technology – for a two-year research program focused on defining the future of cybersecurity for the maritime industry. Study participants, which include DHS and the Department of Defense, will focus on key areas that will help define future research and guidance.

Roberts Re-Elected NSRP Panel Vice Chair

Patrick Roberts, Director of Operations for ShipConstructor USA, has been re-elected Vice Chairman of the Business Process Technologies Panel for the United States National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP). The upcoming year will be Roberts’ second year in the role of Vice Chairman. The NSRP Business Process Technologies Panel advises the NSRP Executive Control Board on research projects involving technology to improve procedures and practices within the shipbuilding industry.

EC Debuts Inland Waterways Observatory

The European Commission (EC) inaugurated its Inland Waterways Observatory. The Internet site is intended to enhance utilization of the European inland waterways. Irving Shipbuilding Commits $2 Mln for Arctic Research

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. has committed $2 million in funding in partnership with the Nunavut Arctic College for an applied research project with a northern focus. “Irving Shipbuilding is pleased to support this call for research proposals for the Nunavut Research Institute,” said Kevin McCoy, Irving Shipbuilding President. The $2 million commitment is being made pursuant to Irving Shipbuilding’s Value Proposition obligation under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). Irving Shipbuilding is committed to spending 0.5 percent of contract revenues with the aim of creating a sustainable marine industry across Canada, amounting to approximately $12 million over the duration of the Arctic Offshore Patrol vessel contract.

A joint research project carried out by Wärtsilä and City University London has succeeded in identifying the specific design parameters that create the risk of 'singing' propellers. Though rare, 'singing' is nevertheless an annoying problem that occurs as a strong tonal noise originating from the propeller, thus causing a negative effect to onboard comfort levels. The research programme reached its conclusions in December 2015. The problem has long been recognised in the marine industry.

Coast Guard Academy Cadet to Receive Fulbright Scholarship

Stephen Horvath, a first class cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, was recently granted a two-year Fulbright Scholarship to study renewable energy technologies in Finland during the 2015-2016 academic year and the 2016-2017 academic year. Horvath, 21, will pursue a master’s degree at the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Lappeenranta, Finland. The mechanical engineering major plans to conduct a research project on methods for energy storage. Horvath’s research project will examine the conversion technologies used to store energy created from wind turbines and solar cells.
