Carolina Long Bay Offshore Wind Lease Auction Results Send Mixed Signals

Container Freight Rates Soar

Global container shipping rates have surged to records on a spike in restocking demand in the United States and Europe, container scarcity at export hubs, and changes in freight flows because of the coronavirus pandemic, shipping sources said.The Freightos Baltic Global Container Index (FBX), a weighted average of 12 major global container routes, rose to $2,359 per forty-foot equivalent (FEU) container this week, the highest on record and up 30% since July 1."The spike is driven by very high demand for container freight since July…

Saudi Aramco, Total in USD1bln Pact

Saudi Aramco and Total hasve signed a joint venture agreement to develop a network of fuel and retail services in Saudi Arabia.The 50:50 JV plans to invest around $1 billion over the next six years in the Saudi fuel retail market and start providing motorists with premium fuels and retail services in the Guf kingdom.“This is a major milestone which will help establish a quality retail fuel network in the Kingdom. One Small Step toward Sustainable Coastal Shipping

Short sea shipping is alive and well on America’s East Coast. In the United States, counties and states directly on the shoreline constitute less than 10 percent of the total land area (not including Alaska), but account for 39 percent of the total population. From 1970 to 2010, the population of these counties increased by almost 40 percent and are projected to increase by an additional 10 million people or 8 percent by 2020. Coastal areas are substantially more crowded than the U.S. as a whole, and population density in coastal areas will continue to increase in the future.

Diebenow Joins Fathom

Port of Long Beach Reports Strong May

Cargo rose at the Port of Long Beach by 6 percent in May, the third consecutive month of growth, the busiest month since October 2007, and the busiest May since 2006. A total of 635,250 TEUs of containerized cargo were moved through the port in May. Imports numbered 327,317 TEUs, a 4.8 percent increase from the same month last year. Exports decreased 7.4 percent to 135,855 TEUs. Empty containers rose 22.6 percent to 172,078 TEUs. With imports exceeding exports, empty containers are sent overseas to be refilled with goods.

Lopolight Names E-LED N.American Distributor

Lopolight, a Denmark-based manufacturer of LED navigation lights, announced the formation of a new partnership with E-LED Lighting, Inc. of Jupiter, Florida. On July 1, 2014 E-LED Lighting, Inc. will become the new North American distributor for Lopolight. Eric MacDonald, former Vice President of Euro Marine Trading, Inc. will be joining E-LED Lighting and assisting in the distribution changeover. E-LED Lighting will handle all OEM accounts in North America with an additional focus on the commercial and military markets with the launch of Lopolight’s new Professional Series.

Preforms Available from West Marine

Prisma Composite Preforms, manufactured by Compsys, Inc. and widely used by production boat builders, are now going to be made available to the boat repair and retail market through West Marine, Watsonville, Calif. Prisma preforms are used for stringers and bulkheads and replace conventional wood or fiberglass stringer and bulkhead grid systems. The custom Prisma products consist of dry knitted fiberglass preformed around a flotation grade polyurethane foam core. The company estimates that stringer and bulkhead installation time can be reduced by 70 percent and hull weight savings of 50 percent have been achieved. West Marine will initially carry the product line in its 2001 catalog and will expand the Prisma line into its retail locations this Spring.

VT Group Buys Training Firm

Shipbuilding and support services supplier VT Group PLC bought training company Touchstone Learning and Skills Ltd for $20.9 million. VT acquired the work-based training provider, which specializes in the retail sector, from Martin Loftus and Touchstone Property Management Ltd. Southampton-based VT is paying $1.3 million in cash on completion and $19.6 in loan notes. Touchstone has annual profits of more than $1.7 million, operates primarily through UK government-funded contracts with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and has offices in several locations across England. VT, which already works in the hospitality, leisure, engineering and care sectors, said the acquisition would allow it to move into the retail market. (Source: Forbes)
