Hapag-Lloyd UASC Merger to Get EU Approval Soon

The planned merger between German container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) could be on the verge of gaining EU Antitrust approval, reported Reuters. The planned tie-up, which would create the world’s fifth-largest carrier is one step closer to becoming a reality after sources close to the deal told Reuters that UASC had agreed to pull out of some vessel sharing agreements, seen as a key stumbling block in gaining approval. The combined company, valued at about 7 to 8 billion euros ($7.5-$8.6 billion), would be the world's fifth largest shipping company, with access to the Asia to Europe trade route and trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes.

French shipping group CMA CGM's $2.4 billion takeover of Neptune Orient Lines is set to be cleared by the European Union's competition regulators, on condition that NOL pulls out from a rival shipping alliance, two people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. CMA CGM, the world's third-biggest container shipping company, is looking to strengthen its position against bigger rivals Maersk Line and Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC). CMA CGM's plan to withdraw NOL from the G6 alliance, which competes with its own Ocean Three alliance, was able to address European Commission concerns, the people said.

Regulators cracking down on national schemes which benefit some; more legal battles ahead with Luxembourg, Dutch tax appeals. EU state aid regulators are looking to Europe's top court to back their decision against a Spanish tax lease scheme for shipbuilders, one of several cases included in a crackdown on national tax programmes which benefit only certain companies. The decision by the European Commission on Monday to appeal to the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union came after a lower court threw out the EU executive's finding in December last year. Judges said the Spanish scheme which involved financing ship construction through a structure with two intermediaries…

Maersk, MSC, 13 Others Offer to Settle EU Probe

Companies offer to announce actual prices, not future plans. Shipping container groups Maersk, MSC and 13 other companies have offered to change their pricing practices to settle an EU antitrust probe and stave off possible fines, two people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The case is being closely watched by other sectors such as supermarkets and chemical firms which use similar methods to announce future price hikes to enable customers choose the best rates. The European Commission opened an investigation into the world's 18 largest shipping companies in November 2013 following dawn raids in May 2011. The EU competition…
